Så man kanske tror att det betyder samma sak på svenska som på engelska, men det kanske inte alltid gör det. Så, det finns såklart många, många engelska ord i svenska språket. Vi kallar det för lånord.   Ja, ett lånord, det är alltså ett ord som svenska språket, i det här fallet, har lånat från engelskan. Och det finns lånord från många olika språk, ja, i alla språk. Det finns också svenska lånord i engelskan. Till exempel ‘smorgasbord’ och ‘ombudsman’. Hello and welcome to a light episode of Simple Swedish Podcast. So today we are going to talk about English words in the Swedish language, which means something else than what you might think. So words that are... it's clear that it in English but it may not always do that So there are of course many, many English words in the Swedish language we call it loanwords for loanword. A loanword is a word that the Swedish language has borrowed from English. And there are loanwords from many different languages in all languages. There are also Swedish loanwords in English, for example smorgasbord and ombudsman. But now we are going to talk about English loanwords in Swedish. And there are of course many words that actually mean the same thing in Swedish as in English

For example, like a fan, so you can say that you are a fan of Taylor Swift Ok, I am not a fan of Taylor Swift, but that was an example But that was an example. Or shorts. Okay, we say it a little different in Swedish. Shorts are short pants. Shorts. We say live music. We say a manager.

We say that something can be tight. We say a win-win. Or a coach, a deadline. These words mean the same thing in English and in Swedish. But there are some words that sound like they mean the same thing in English and in Swedish, but it's not really true. So we have the first word, nice. So, sometimes nice in Swedish means the same as nice in English, but

it doesn't really have the same feeling, the same meaning. Because nice in English is nice in Swedish. For example, It was nice to meet you. It was nice meeting you. Or, We had a nice time yesterday.

We had a nice time yesterday. So not, we had a nice time. We had a nice time yesterday. We had a nice time yesterday. When you say nice in Swedish, you mean a little more like lovely or as we say in Gothenburg, good. And that in English would be like cool, awesome, sweet. So that's a little bit more what we mean when we say nice in Swedish.

If I say, what a nice song. It's a song that I think is very good. Or, what a nice concert it was yesterday. What a very good concert. I really liked that concert. Or, what a nice car you have, a cool car. Like a cool car. So it's a little different actually. So if you want to say, he's a nice person, don't say he's a nice person. Say inte han är en nice person. Utan, säg han är en trevlig person.

Ehm, ja. Så nice på svenska har kanske, kanske är lite starkare än på engelska. Man menar någonting som är liksom härligt gött. Alltså nice, nice, nice, damn nice. But of course, it can often also mean the same thing. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. with the word cool because in English you use the word cool in different ways, it's very broad yes so but in Swedish it means a little more like cool in a slightly relaxed way, a little swag, a little wow yeah swag type. You can have cool shoes or a cool jacket, you can see a cool guy you can think shit what a cool guy

so It's like that guy has swag Or a car or a design You can think it's cool but If you want to say for example That's cool. I didn't know that Then you don't say

Ah that's cool, no Then you might say Ah nice, I didn't know that, nice Or if you want to say She's cool, I like her Don't say say, she's cool, I like her. Don't say, she's cool. Say, for example, she's nice. Because, yes, to say that a person is nice is almost like saying that a person is a cool person in English.

So, yes, the same thing with the word cool. Sometimes it means the same as in English, but generally the word has a different feeling. And we also have words from the digital era. New. So for example, chatting comes of course from the word to chat in English, but in Swedish when you chat, you specifically mean to write directly with the message with someone online. For example in messenger or on WhatsApp. There you can chat, you write the direct message to each other. That is to chat in Swedish. Or an email in Swedish it is specifically e-mail, that is, digital messages that you send to someone's e-mail address. You can also say e-mail in Swedish. And we actually have a word that I wanted wanted to mention and that is after work. Because the word after work, it sounds like it comes from English, but it actually doesn't. After work we Swedes have found. It is simply to have a few drinks after work with your colleagues often on Friday. And sometimes special after work restaurants are also offered.
