Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm sorry, that was a little melody from Håkan Hellström's song Valborg, which is one of my absolute favorite songs with Håkan Hellström. If you haven't heard Håkan Hellström, you have to listen to him, because he is one of the best, most famous, most loved Swedish artists. For example, the song Valborg is a very, very nice song. So check it out Otherwise welcome to Simple Swedish Podcast Today we are not going to talk about music We are going to talk about some scary things
Starting point is 00:00:59 Because it's almost Halloween and I thought it would be a good idea to talk about some scary things. First and foremost, I would like to thank some new Patrons. So it's Juan, Noor, Trausty, Jelena, Merzad, Elisabeth and Xiaoxuan. Thank you so much for supporting this podcast. Without you, there would be no Simple Swedish Podcast. And you will get a transcript for all episodes, perfect. And you will learn even more from this podcast. And, yes, so.
Starting point is 00:01:50 Thursday the 31st is Halloween and it's pretty soon. And I have actually made an episode about Halloween. So go and listen to episode 58 Yes, it was a few years ago that I recorded that episode But yes, listen to episode 58 If you want to know more about how we celebrate Halloween in Sweden and learn some vocabulary that is related to Halloween. For example, to dress up. To dress up is something you do up with an outfit. You dress up to something.
Starting point is 00:02:50 For example, a monster or a demon or a ghost or whatever. Donald Trump or something. So you can dress up to something. And something else that is common is that children walk around and knock on doors and say booze or candy. So that we say in Sweden, we do not say trick or treat, but we say booze or candy. It does not rhyme, but it's not necessary. If you have children who knock on your door and say buss or candy, give them some candy so that you don't get exposed to any buss. be exposed to something scary. Okay, so on Halloween it will be a little scary of course.
Starting point is 00:03:53 What does scary mean? If something is scary, it means that you are a little scared, like, ehh, how scary. It could be, for example, a scary movie. A horror movie. So, a horror movie is a movie that, well, it's the meaning that you should be scared. A horror movie. It's like a scary movie with... So we can take a few words here. So what can a horror movie contain?
Starting point is 00:04:34 It can for example contain the ghost. So a ghost is, one might say, a kind of spirit. If a person has died, one might say that, then perhaps that person's spirit is still there, so, like a ghost. And the ghosts, they are ghosts, it's a verb as well, to ghost. One might, for example, say that there are ghosts in that house. verb also, att spöka. Man kan till exempel säga att det spökar i det huset.
Starting point is 00:05:08 Så om det spökar i ett hus så betyder det att det finns spöken i det huset. Jag har aldrig sett ett spöke och jag hoppas att jag inte heller behöver se något spöke And I hope that I don't have to see a ghost because I would be pretty scared, I think. Other scary things are, for example, a monster. So sometimes when you are a child, you might think that there is a monster under the bed and yeah, it's a bit scary, you might be afraid to look under the bed at night, because you're afraid that there is a monster there you dare not look under the bed and not being dare to do anything
Starting point is 00:06:05 means of course that you are afraid to do it so you don't do it because you don't dare to do it. So, you might not dare to watch a horror movie. I have always loved horror movies. I was very very fascinated by horror movies when I was very fascinated by horror movies when I was younger. I remember that my dad had a movie store. He opened the first store in my hometown Alingsås where you could rent movies.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Rent movies. where you could rent films rent films, so it became very popular it's friday or saturday, so you rent a film and have some friday fun and every time I was in that store I went to the horror movie section and was longing for the day I would get to see the horror movies because that's often the 15 year limit on that, so you have to be 15 years old. My parents were pretty careful with that limit so I didn't get to watch horror movies before I was maybe 14-15 years old. There can also be vampires in horror movies, a vampire is of course Dracula, for example, is a vampire. A creature that is awake at night and drinks your blood.
Starting point is 00:07:59 For example, what the hell is the movie called? It was popular, Twilight, right? So in Twilight there are vampires And in Twilight there are also werewolves And a werewolf is a human that can transform into a kind of wolf A kind of monster wolf. It's a werewolf. So when it's full moon, then these werewolves, or these people, they are transformed into werewolves. Yes, werewolf. En var, ulv. Ulv är ett gammalt ord för varg.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Så en ulv, ja, det är liksom synonym till varg. Men nu för tiden så säger man varg på svenska och inte ulv. Och sen har vi till exempel en zombie. En zombie. På svenska har't have the sound z, we don't have z in Swedish, so we say a zombie. So, everyone knows what a zombie is. We have a demon. So a demon, I think everyone knows that too, because it's usually the same word in all languages so we have a demon We have a devil
Starting point is 00:09:33 and yes, we have a devil or the devil so the devil is actually a biblical being the devil is this character, you could say, that exists in hell. So, you could say that the devil and God are opposite forces. So, the devil, I mean, a devil. a devil a devil
Starting point is 00:10:06 something that also exists on Halloween that you talk about on Halloween are witches so a witch is a woman who can troll
Starting point is 00:10:22 who has some magical abilities a witch a troll who has some magical powers. A witch. We also talk about witches in Harry Potter. Hermione is a witch and Harry Potter is a troll-car. But when you talk about witches, you might mean more associations to the witch-burnings. At the time, people thought that there were witches. And it was a few hundred years ago, I think it was the 16th century, so witches were burning on the fire.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Well, women who were thought to be witches. Because there is a legend that the witches fly to a place called Blåkulla. And there, there a lot of things happen that you shouldn't talk about because there the witches are hanging out with the devil. So it's, well, all sinful that you can imagine probably happens on blue pillow So yes
Starting point is 00:12:09 We have a few more. We have for example the word troll Yes, it's also from old people believe Yes, and I also want to say when you talk and the word afraid I also want to say when you talk about the word scared you say that you are afraid of something so for example I am afraid of
Starting point is 00:12:32 for example spiders spiders are the most common fear so it's this the cramp with eight legs. So, a spindle. So spindle fear or spindle phobia. It's like the most common phobia.
Starting point is 00:12:56 And they say that you are afraid of spindles. Not afraid of or anything like that, but afraid. You but afraid of something. And you might be afraid if someone tells a ghost story. A ghost story is a story that you tell to scare someone. To scare someone because someone should be afraid so if I scare you, it means that I do something so that you get scared for example, I tell a ghost story that is very scary then maybe you get scared
Starting point is 00:13:44 and maybe might get nightmares. A nightmare is a dream that you get scared in. A scary dream or a dream that gives anxiety. An unpleasant dream, an unpleasant dream. It's a nightmare. And I also recommend a podcast called Creepypod. Creepypod is very good because it has a free transcript. It deals with different scary topics.
