Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to Simple Swedish Podcast. My name is Fredrik. Now we will listen to the second part of the episode about how we save the world. There are things that need to be done. And I like when we don't just talk about how bad everything is and how bad things will happen. But how we actually do to solve the problem and also what is actually being done. So I think we can only do this by having a vision and knowing that people are working on this and that everyone can try to work on this a little bit. And then we have to know exactly what we can do, including the human psychology behind this.
Starting point is 00:01:15 So that's what I'm talking about in this episode. You also learned some vocabulary related to this subject. So, let's listen to the second part. Then we have of course the shift more and more to renewable energy sources. So sun, wind, water, all those things. things because it was a quote in the documentary that I thought was very good, so if we can't do something forever, it is not sustainable by definition, so if we if it is something that we do that we can't do forever, then it is not sustainable. Then we can't continue with that per definition. So we have to think about how we can have economic growth, how we can become richer
Starting point is 00:02:46 while we have a more circular economy everything has to be sustainable everything has to be renewable I think that politicians often talk about economic growth, that we need more people, more resources, more and more. But by definition it is not sustainable. So we need a new way to think about it. A new way of thinking. So yeah. And the third point we need to do is to re-wild the planet. Okay, I found the word so we have to first and foremost
Starting point is 00:03:46 protect all the wild land that exists all the wild nature that exists it has to be protected it has to be protected it is like this
Starting point is 00:04:02 the last hundred years the wild land It's like this. The last 100 years, the wilderness has gone from 66% to 35%. So, 100 years ago, in the early 1900s, 66% of the earth was wilderness. And now it's 35%. So almost half of all the wilderness has disappeared in just 100 years. So that's a crazy number. And it's already at a very critical level. So we simply cannot lose more wilderness.
Starting point is 00:04:54 And this is also one of the problems with a growing population needs more resources and therefore we need to exploit more wilderness. More people means less wilderness. But we are already at a critical level of wilderness. It can not disappear more wilderness. We also have to like, to wild the land. The land growing things like bananas, rice and wheat. For food production. So we have to start converting the land we have, now is the land of agriculture. It has to be wild again. We have to get more wild land.
Starting point is 00:06:11 Right now the wild land disappears, but it has to go to the other side. There has to be more wild land. Because it is at a critical level. that it is at a critical level. And one thing that people have to do is to eat more plant-based food. Why? Well, simply because there is no room for everyone to eat meat every day. There is no room.
Starting point is 00:06:53 People often think that it's about the release, or even health. Why should you be a vegetarian, or why should you eat more plant-based food but it seems like, to produce it than like plant-based food. I don't think everyone has to be vegetarians, but it's clear that everyone has to eat much less meat. And I think everyone can do that. The crazy thing is that it's about space. That's the big problem.
Starting point is 00:08:03 And it's also about fishing. Because everyone knows that we fish too much. But something that is very interesting is that if we protect a third of all fishing waters, that is 30 percent, if we protect 30 percent. So if 30 percent of all fishing waters are like fishing free areas, no fishing zones. Then there will be so much fish in these areas that we can fish freely on the remaining 60% So that we get a sustainable fishing, only if we protect 30% of all the fish water, we can fish as much as we want on 60% of the fish water. It sounds like something that is so easy to do. And it has been done. There was an example, Samoa did it.
Starting point is 00:09:26 And that's why we know that it actually is like that. So if we have a certain percentage of all the wilderness and the ocean that is simply protected, then this will work. So all of this is 100% possible. It just has to be done. It has to stop the disappearance, the wilderness will disappear, we must protect 30% of the ocean, we must be in two parts, because it is simply very long. I didn't think it would be so long, but it was. It happens sometimes. So, what is it that motivates people to act? What is it that makes me feel like I'm actually going to start doing something?
Starting point is 00:10:53 What makes me do things? What motivates me to act? Often people think that we need more information, we need to care more about ourselves and we need to invest more money But that is clear, I should say. I didn't know this, but clearly, clearly means that, that like, well, I didn't know that, but clearly that's how it is. That information doesn't make, I mean, isn't a strong factor to get people people do things. People will not act more just by giving more information. Some will do that, but it is not a strong factor. Some people act when they get more information. But generally,
Starting point is 00:12:06 if I get more information about the climate crisis, most people don't act that much more just because they get more information. The same thing with that you care. Most people care, but it's not a strong factor to act. Okay? So what are strong factors for people to act, for people to do something.
Starting point is 00:12:47 What factors motivate people to act. Okay? So, it's like this, we are social beings. So it's social factors that have the biggest impact, that have the biggest effect. So, like, conversation is clearly the most important thing, it's what motivates us. It's aation with people so just by talking about these things with your friends With your colleagues and so on It can make a big difference to
Starting point is 00:13:40 Compare yourself with other people Is a strong factor I see that other people around me do this I don't want to be worse I want to be as good as the people around me We We adapt to the group
Starting point is 00:14:04 So if the group does something, then we will want to do it. Then I will want to do it. I want to do it as a group. I see what my group is doing and I adapt to it. I imitate other people's behavior. We do things that others do. And also that you promise each other things. That you tell another person, I'm going to do this then I give myself a big motivation to actually do it If I tell you I'm going to do this then it's a big chance that I actually do it So we don't really need more information about these things.
Starting point is 00:15:09 We don't need to worry about them anymore. We just need to talk about this. We need to make it visible. We need to show what we do and we need to compare ourselves with each other, we need to talk to each other. Another thing is goals and rewards that trigger the dopamine system. It is also a strong factor. We are motivated by the chemistry in our brains. Dopamine controls our motivation. Very interesting, I think.
Starting point is 00:16:14 And that was all I wanted to say in this episode actually. So... I think it's very, very important that everyone is aware of these things, that we think about these things, that we talk about these things and that we understand that we not only think about well what goes wrong, but think more about what we can actually do.
Starting point is 00:16:52 And we actually do a lot. There are many positive things happening in the world. And in this movie, A Life on Our Planet, they show things, positive things that actually happen. How they have saved different species from extinction, how they have
Starting point is 00:17:18 protected the areas from fish, how technology creates new opportunities to grow without using large land areas and so on. So there is a lot of inspiration as well. And before we end, I would like to invite you to our free community at Skol. There we share different resources to learn Swedish, where you can talk to other people who are learning Swedish. And yes, simply, if you learn Swedish, this is the place you need to be.
