Varför just den 14 februari?

Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello there! You are listening to Simple Swedish Podcast and today it will be about the day of love, the day of romance, which we in Swedish call the day of all hearts. Swedish is called for Alla Hjärtans Dag. So, yes, we are going to talk about Alla Hjärtans Dag, that is, Valentine's Day in English, and that is then the 14th of February. And I have written a short article on easy Swedish, where I go through a little bit the history behind Alla Hjärtans Dag How did it start?
Starting point is 00:00:50 Why on the 14th of February? And who was this Saint Valentine? Okay, and before we start I will thank some Patrons It's Leon, Joshua, Katerina Before we start, I would like to thank some Patrons. Leon, Joshua, Katerina, Evgeni and Roz. Roz, Roz, Roz. Thank you for supporting the podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:16 I will also be talking about a special offer on Language Gym. So, if you are a person who has learned Swedish for a while already, but you may have difficulty finding people to speak Swedish with, or you may actually live in Sweden but still think it's too difficult to speak Swedish with or you may get too nervous when you speak with Swedes
Starting point is 00:01:58 In that case, Language Gym is for you! We have over 100 lessons every month and it's fully focused on conversation with real people. So you can talk to people every day if you want. And we have a very special offer that only applies from the 12th of February to and with the 16th of February. Yes, so around all of the day of the heart. And that is that you get unlimited lessons in one month, that is over 100 lessons for 399 kronor.
Starting point is 00:02:54 You save 800 kronor, unlimited lessons in one month. And after that month, you choose for yourself if you want to continue or not. So 399 kronor, over 100 lessons after that month, choose yourself and it applies from and with the 12th of February to and with the 16th of February I leave a link in the description and we actually have two new lessons in Language Gym that start right after this campaign
Starting point is 00:03:49 and it's focused on relationships. We have one lesson about the five languages of love and one about the connection theory. Connection theory is in English, attachment theory. Attachment styles. So, and it's not really one lesson, but two courses. So two new courses, with this new concept, which is personal development is to learn new things, improve your life through the Swedish language. And in these specific courses, the focus is on relationships.
Starting point is 00:04:35 And this is the best way to learn a language, to do things, learn things, talk to people in that language. Yes! So check out the offer, don't miss it. Now I'm going to read this article. So, article on easy Swedish about all the day of the heart, that is, Valentine's Day. And I will read this article, but I will not read word by word, so not like word for word, but I will tell what is in the article so that it it becomes easier to understand. Because spoken language is easier to listen to, and written language is easier to read.
Starting point is 00:05:33 So that's why I will use spoken language and I will tell what is written in the article instead of reading word for word. Okay? So, why do we celebrate Alla Hjärtans Dag on February 14th? And who is this Saint Valentine? So, today we will talk about Alla Hjärtans Dag and Alla Hjärtans Dag, or Valentine's Day as it is called in English. This tradition is actually quite new in Sweden. The first time that people started talking about this day in Sweden was it was 1956. So not that long ago, but this tradition is much older than that.
Starting point is 00:06:34 So we go back to the Middle Ages and we go to England. Because already at this time, this day, the 14th of February, was romantic. Because one thought that it was the 14th of February that the birds formed a pair. So birds find their partner on this day, February 14th. So you would think that birds would find their partner on February 14th. You also thought that this was the first day of spring. The first day of spring. And there were special spring parties. And there were games where you paired up girls and boys So you paired up them, you said, ok, now you two are a pair
Starting point is 00:07:53 and now you two are a pair, so you pair up two people And you said, ok, now you are a couple for the coming year. And these couples would keep together during the spring and during the coming summer dances and parties. It was the idea that they would keep together, that they would continue to be a couple, even if it was a kind of play. poems and love letters to the girls. So, these Valentine letters. But this person, Valentin, who was he? Well, this guy, Saint Valentin, he was a Roman saint. A saint, you hear Saint Valentine, then we are talking about a saint, a kind of holy person. And he was from Derni.
Starting point is 00:09:20 But you don't know much about him But there is a legend about St. Valentine And this legend says that this guy, Valentine, was in prison. Yes, he was in prison. And then an order came from the emperor Claudius that he would be executed. To execute someone means that you kill that person Someone means that you kill that person, but in the name of the law. So you judge the person to the death. A court says that. The justice system says that.
Starting point is 00:10:19 That this person should die now. And then you person will be executed. Poor Valentin was executed on February 14th, 270. 270, yes, very long time ago. It's like 1800 years ago. So he was executed and according to the legend he had learned to know the daughter of the prison guard and became in love with her
Starting point is 00:10:58 the prison guard, that is the person who guards the prisoners in a prison If you are in a prison, you are a prisoner And there are people who work in the prison to guard the prisoners So they stay in their cells. And that person is called the prison guard. A person who guards prisoners. And this prison guard had a daughter. And the legend says that Valentin fell in love with this daughter and he wrote a letter to her
Starting point is 00:11:52 before he died, before he was discharged and he signed the letter with your Valentine. To sign means that you write it down as a kind of underline or something. So he wrote, he ended the letter with your Valentine. So that was the first Valentine's letter or the first Valentine's card. And so you might have been inspired by this in England that were held during the Middle Ages. Because this with Valentine was long before the Middle Ages.
Starting point is 00:12:57 Later, during the 17th century, this day began to get more commercial meaning. So they started to sell these Valentine's letters or Valentine's cards. And the first time you could see something in Sweden on this theme, the theme Alla Hjärtans Dag, that was in 1956. And then you could read in the newspaper Alla Hjärtans Dag, now on Thursday, Valentine's Day. Yes, that was 1956 and after that this day has become more and more popular. And I can say that in my own life I have mostly broken
Starting point is 00:14:02 about all of the day of the heart when I've been in a relationship so then maybe I've gone out and eaten dinner at a restaurant
Starting point is 00:14:18 and had it cozy and so and yes, I think maybe this day feels pretty commercial, but I'm still a little romantic. So I think it's nice to do something with your partner, even if it's not completely serious. Still, it's nice to do something with your partner, I think. So that was it, I hope you've learned a little more about Alla Hjärtans Dag and don't forget to take part of this beautiful offer. 399 kronor for one month at Language Gym between the 12th and 16th of February Yes, so I hope to see you in Language Gym
Starting point is 00:15:26 Have a nice day See you soon, bye!
