So, today we are going to talk about spiders.
I have always liked spiders because I think they are cool and fascinating.
We are going to go through some facts here.
The first thing that is important to say is that spiders are not insects.
Because insects have 6 legs and spiders have 8 legs.
So that's a pretty easy way to see the difference.
Most spiders also have 8 eyes actually
And spiders are also related to scorpions and quails
Scorpions, you know what they are? Quallis are these very small animals that you can be allergic to
I am actually allergic to quallis
They are everywhere, in the house, in the bed and so on
But they are so small that you can't see them Everywhere, in the house, in the bed and so on
But they are so small that you can't see them
But we are going to talk about spiders
And many are as I said, afraid of spiders
But
Spiders are
Not aggressive
And most spiders are
Completely harmless So it's just a few poisonous spiders.
And even less deadly poisonous.
It's extremely unusual that people die of a spider bite
It's extremely unusual, most spiders are harmless and not aggressive at all
So you absolutely don't need to be afraid of spiders
And one thing that everyone knows and that spiders are most known for is that they spin net
They spin net, so it comes out a thread
from the spider's body
A thread of silk
And the spider uses this thread to spin net
It can actually produce many different types of silk, many different kinds of threads
for different purposes
and this with the thread of the spider, the web of the spider
this is what I find the most fascinating.
This material that the spider builds its net with.
This material is extremely strong.
It is one of the strongest materials in nature
And it is actually
five times stronger than steel
And I know that this sounds pretty sick
before you think, steel is a kind of metal
And a spider web is soft and easy to break
But you have to remember that a spiderread is very very thin
This thread that the spider spins is 1000 times thinner than a hair-straw
A hair-straw is a strand of hair, hair that you have on your head
hair that you have on your head. A hair strand is very thin, but a spindle strand is
much thinner.
If a spindle strand was
1 cm thick and you compare
the spindle strand with steel
which is 1 cm thick, then the spindle with steel wire, which is 1 cm thick.
Then the spindle wire will be 5 times stronger than the steel wire.
At the same time, it is more flexible and much easier. So that the spider has a kind of super power that it can produce this super material
with its body. So a material that is stronger than steel and still much lighter and so so so so so thin
And it does that all the time
Some spiders spin their net
At night
And then during the day it sits and waits
Hopefully it will come, it has an insect will get stuck in the net so it gets food And then the next night it will spin a new net
So it spins a new net every night
Not all spiders do that, but it's pretty sick
And then it regains the silk from the net
So it eats up its old net and spins a new net
This material is a liquid inside the spider's body So it is not a solid material inside the body
It becomes solid when it comes out So it's also pretty crazy that it's floating inside the body
and then the spider pulls out this floating liquid
and when it's pulled out, it becomes a solid material
When you split it, it becomes a solid material
It can produce different types of silk
So it uses one type of silk to spin net
And another type of silk to use as a lifeline because when the spider goes around they release the thread behind them
so that if they fall off, for example a tree, then it has the thread as a lifeline
so it can fall, but it has the thread so it can handle it
so there are different types of silks in this super material material. Some spiders can also release a thread in the air and go with the wind.
Use the thread as a sail in the wind and fly away. Not all spiders spin.
Many spiders spin not net.
For example this dad's long leg.
It is often called a ball with long legs
They spin no net
And then there are these jump spindles
So a jump spindle is...
You have probably seen a jump spindle, because they can jump
And they are very very very fast and they don't spin any net either.
They hunt insects by jumping. Another fascinating thing about spiders is their mating behavior. and decides to try and find a female and try to get children
so a male is like a male and a female is a female
so a male is like a male So when you talk about animals, you say
A male for him and a female for her
Pretty easy
And when you pair, it's the sexual act for animals
So when the spiders are mating, when we talk about spiders that spin, he starts to trum on the net
He has a kind of arms, you could say, and his arms are shaped like two clubs You can actually see often on a spider if it is a male or female because the male often has these clubs on her web so that she will come out
and so he can flirt with her
and
and this
and they often have
it's something that spiders often have
they have different interesting behaviors when it comes to mating
For example this drumming
Another very interesting behavior these hoppins, when the male finds a female and he wants to flirt with her
Then he dances for her. He has a little show, a dance show to impress her. And yes, if she likes the dance, he gets to have his
nice time with her, but he must always be very fast, because it is common among spiders that the female eats the male after mating.
The male lives dangerously.
But the dance and the drumming There are other interesting actions as well
I recommend you to go to YouTube
And search for BBC Best Spider Moments
I think it's like 4-5 videos with very interesting videos about spiders
Another thing that is common is that the mom spider takes care of her children
about their children.
And that is perhaps something you don't think about
that these small creeps do.
A creep is like a little animal like insect or spider these small ones that creep around.
You can call it a creep. And it is perhaps a bit unexpected that a little creep takes care of its children. These interesting and fascinating behaviors that are more common among bigger animals.
Like dancing or taking care of your children.
So, yeah.
Check out YouTube for fun spindle videos.
I've done that.
This is going to be a pretty nerdy episode
But I have always been fascinated by nature
And it felt interesting to make a video about spindles
So I hope you have learned some new things about spindles
And maybe also some new words
Like for example a spider and that the spider spins its net to catch insects and so on
So that was all for today
Take care, see you next week.
And remember, if you kill a spider, it will rain.
Which is not good in Sweden.
It's unfortunate to kill a spider So, don't kill spiders, but be fascinated by them instead
