Welcome to Sleep Escape and to this sleepy story called Rain at the cozy autumn cabin.
And this story will follow along with a woman named Steph who's leaving behind the busyness
of her daily life in the city for a quiet solo weekend at her family's.
cabin in the mountains, where autumn has taken hold. The leaves are changing colors, and rain is just
beginning to fall. Tonight, there's nowhere you need to be. Nothing you need to do, except relax,
settle in, and listen to the sound of my voice.
And whenever you do feel that gentle pull of rest, just let go.
For now, we'll begin with a little wind down.
And then I'll turn to our story where very little happens and there's nothing to do.
And at the end of the story, I'll repeat some soft and calming affirmations.
slowly fading in volume so that you have plenty of opportunity to fall asleep.
So go ahead and settle into the most comfortable position you can find,
taking the time to make any adjustments that help you get even just 1% more comfortable
because you deserve to be as comfortable as possible tonight.
and once you've found that most relaxing position,
just rest your gaze there,
out on the wall or the ceiling,
whatever's in front of you,
and I know it seems counterintuitive,
but it's extremely effective at helping you relax and fall asleep,
and you can slowly allow your eyes to close.
as I count down, starting at five, feeling that growing weight of your eyelids.
Four, just releasing the day, beginning to let everything go.
Three, your eyes may be flickering and fluttering.
Under that growing weight, as we come to two, as they are almost completely
closed. But holding on for just another moment as we finally arrive at one and you allow your
eyes to close all the way down now, enjoying that first moment of darkness behind your islands,
taking a nice, deep breath in, filling your lungs completely and just,
Just letting it fall back out with a long and slow exhale.
Once more, breathing in, gathering any tension, any lingering energy,
and then breathing back out, letting the exhale be even longer than your inhale.
And I invite you to continue breathing in this same way.
Each long and slow breath is a message to your body and your mind.
That it's safe to slow down now.
Or if you'd like, you can let go of that focus on your breath
and invite the muscles of your forehead to relax,
softening the muscles around your eyes and your cheeks,
and your jaw as that softness spreads down through your neck and into your shoulders down your arms
all the way into your hands to the tips of your fingers feeling it move through your chest down your back
along your spine through your hips and your thighs and all the way down your legs to the tips of your toes
your whole body turning off for the night sinking deeper and deeper down into the support of the bed
as any thoughts in your mind can simply drift farther and farther away, just like how leaves
fall from the branches of the trees in autumn and there's no need to catch them or follow them.
You can just let them pass and fall farther and farther away.
and as you continue to settle deeper and softer into the bed,
let's meet our new friend, Steph, just as she's leaving the busyness of the city behind.
It's Friday afternoon, and Steph is finally on the road, her suitcase in the backseat,
and a favorite playlist humming low.
The city is shrinking slowly but surely in the rearview mirror.
It's been a long week, a long few weeks, really,
full of deadlines and meetings that ran too long.
And a boss who seems to special.
specialize in sending emails at the worst possible times.
But none of that matters right now, because for the next few days,
Steph doesn't have to worry about any of that.
She doesn't even have to think about it once.
She's headed to her family's cozy cabin in the mountains,
the one her parents bought, back when she was.
still in school. And every autumn, without fail, it calls to her for an easy, private, and pleasant
retreat to a world where everything seems simpler, and time seems to move slower. As the highway
turns into a smaller road and the smaller road begins to climb the scenery starts to change office buildings give way to
neighborhoods neighborhoods give way to farms and farms give way to trees and then even more trees and the best part
is that it's the heart of autumn and so the hills are covered in gold and amber and deep burgundy rolling on endlessly in every direction
steff lets her window down just a crack and breathes that crisp cool and clean air
inviting something in her chest to unclench, just ever so slightly, for the first time in weeks,
she's got nothing to worry about, nowhere to be at any certain time. No, where to be at any certain time.
No problems to solve. It's as though she can feel the tension draining out of her, and then
right on cue the first drops of rain begin to tap on the windshield some people may sigh at that but not step
she smiles and turns her wipers on low because step has always loved the rain especially in autumn it makes the whole world
feel a little quieter, a little cozier, like it's giving everyone permission to slow down.
Plus, it highlights that autumn smell of falling leaves.
By the time she turns onto the gravel road that winds up to the cabin,
the rain has settled into a gentle and steady rhythm.
them, drumming softly on the roof of her car, and she's already beginning to feel lighter,
as though the rain is washing away all of the stress and the tension, and it's at this moment
that the cabin appears through the trees, just as it always does. A long cabin, slightly weathered,
with gray shutters and a porch that wraps all the way around the front.
Steph parks her car and steps out into the cool, damp air, pulling her hood up over her head.
As the rain patters on, and she hurries up the porch steps.
her suitcase in hand the key sticks a little in the lock the way it always has and the door creaks open
into a house that smells faintly of cedar and old books and countless autumn's before this one
It immediately brings back memories of warm fires, cozy meals, and late night laughs with her family and friends.
She turns on a lamb and sets her bag down by the stairs.
And for a moment, she just stands there, listening to the sound of the rain, tapping.
tapping gently on the roof and the wind moving slowly through the trees outside and underneath it all
there's silence the good kind the kind she hasn't heard in weeks the kind that she can feel down in the core of her being she fills a kettle
and sets it on the stove, and while she waits for it to boil, she wanders through the rooms,
running her hand along the back of the old sofa, pausing at a shelf of photographs,
showing her family at this same cabin through years and years, the kettle begins to whistle
and Steph pours the hot water over a bag of chamomile tea into a mug she made when she was a kid
she watches it steep and turn a warm honeyed brown and then she carries the mug upstairs
to a big soaking tub and turns on the tap.
pouring bath salts in as she watches it fill.
Steam begins to curl up into the crisp bathroom air.
And once it's full, she sinks in slowly.
Feeling the warm water wrap around her shoulders and soften all of her muscles.
she lets out a long sigh one that she feels like she's been holding onto for weeks,
sipping her tea and listening to the rain against the window.
She feels something begin to loosen.
It's as though the stress and the tension is being drained out of her by the bath,
The space between her eyes relaxes, and her face softens, leading her to realize just how tight it had been for so long
she'd almost forgotten what it felt like, not to be tense all the time.
And eventually, when she finally climbs into bed that night,
wrapped in the quilt her grandmother made.
And the rain still falling steadily outside.
She feels more relaxed than she has in months.
And only for a moment she feels herself,
softening deeper and deeper down and into the bed
as her eyes fall closed, so heavy.
and relaxed, that she doesn't think she could even open them if she tried.
And before long, she's fast asleep, lulled into peaceful dreams,
with the soft tapping of rain on the roof above.
And that rain continues until the sun rises the next morning.
slowly waking a staff who feels more rejuvenated and restored than she ever thought possible
how much she needed that good night's rest and she so deserved it she lies there for a while
in the cozy, dim light of the morning,
listening to the sound of the rain
in no hurry at all to start the day.
But eventually,
she makes her way downstairs into the kitchen
where she makes her favorite breakfast
and a warm cup of coffee
and while it all comes together.
She watches the rain through the window, tracing in jagged lines down the glass.
She eats slowly at the wooden kitchen table, savoring each bite.
While thinking about how to spend her day, the rain is forecast to continue on.
So she could stay in, curled up with a book.
and most days that would feel exactly right.
But something about the autumn rain today feels inviting
rather than something to hide from.
So Steph decides, why not?
I'll go for a walk.
She knows the perfect trail to enjoy the autumn leaves,
and so she finds her old rain jacket in the hall closet.
A little worn, but still waterproof.
She puts on her hiking boots by the door
and steps outside.
The trail is one she's walked a hundred times before,
but each time she adventures along its meandering hills and streams,
and streams, there's always something different to appreciate. A new tree growing here,
a new turn in a stream over there, and today it holds something even more special as the trail
is softened by the rain. The dirt, a rich, dark brown, paddard. Paddy,
softly beneath her boots. The forest around her is alive with color. The maples in a fiery
orange and deep red. The birches glowing in a soft, buttery yellow, and here and there, an old stubborn
our note, still holding on to a few green leaves of summer. The rain patters gently through the canopy,
dripping down and slow, scattered drops onto the hood of her rain jacket, and she walks slowly,
in no rush at all, and with no particular destination in mind, stopped.
to admire each little thing she notices, the quiet crunch of leaves beneath her boots,
the soft babbling of the mountain streams. Some leaves still cling tightly to their branches,
seeming to tremble in the breeze, not quite ready to let go, while others release release without any
resistance or tension at all, spinning gently through the air and landing softly on the ground.
Steph stops for a moment beneath a tall maple tree and watches a single leaf detach and drift,
turning slowly as it falls and she finds herself thinking.
about all the energy that tree spent all spring and all summer growing each one of those leaves
pulling in sunlight and rain and turning it into this whole brilliant canopy above her and now here it is
letting every last one of them go without any struggle, without any sadness.
Just a quiet, natural release, as though the tree somehow knows that holding on was never really the point.
These leaves did their job.
They've played their part.
And now they're free to fall and recycle in the soil to nurture the next season of growth.
The next chapter and standing there in the rain, Steph feels something shift quietly in her chest.
She thinks about the last few months, about the thing.
that leave her feeling exhausted and depleted more often than not about a version of herself
that keeps trying so hard to prove something to people who she doesn't care about proving it too
about old stories she's still carrying that are no longer serving her she's been holding on to all of this
the way that some of those leaves are still clinging to their branches, even though, if she's honest,
they stopped serving her a long time ago, and as she watches the forest let go so easily,
she realizes that she's allowed to do the same, that growth was never about.
holding on forever, but that it's about seasons of creation and release,
about building with a goal in mind, and allowing yourself the room to change course
halfway through. The old chapter doesn't have to be dragged along into the new one.
It can simply be allowed to close.
to release the same way these leaves are falling so that something new has the opportunity to take its place
and it's with this realization that staff takes a slow calm breath in and releases it in a way she's never let a breath go before and she's not
sure if it's a smell of autumn in the air or the acknowledgement that she's ready for a new chapter
but she feels a new sense of life a calmer more confident more energized and yet more at ease way of being
There's something in her that feels lighter and more free than it has in a very long time.
And with that, she turns and continues walking for a while longer, not thinking about much of anything at all, just noticing the sound of the rain, the color of the leaves.
and the quiet, steady rhythm of her own footsteps on the trail.
And when she finally returns back to the cabin, it's with an easy, open feeling in her chest,
as though she's left something behind out there in the forest that's been weighing her down for so long,
and she feels as though she's left it exactly where it belongs.
And although her jacket is damp, her nose and cheeks are pink from the cool air.
She feels wonderfully and thoroughly refreshed.
She takes off her boots and leaves them by the door.
She pads into the kitchen.
throws some logs in the fireplace and sets it ablaze as the warmth begins to fill the entire space.
A sense of coziness and ease is taking over everything, and it's with this same sense, filling
her heart and mind that she makes a delicious meal.
and settles by the fire to enjoy it.
After which, she curls up with her book,
the one she's been meaning to finish for weeks,
and she reads it by the firelight
as the rain continues, soft and steady, outside.
And for the whole day,
she doesn't check her phone,
she doesn't think about her life,
back in the city.
She doesn't think about the problems in the world.
She's simply here.
Warm.
Cozy.
Fully.
And totally at ease
until eventually
she yawns
and her eyes grow heavy.
So she sets the book down
makes her way upstairs to bed, puts on her fresh pajamas, and climbs in under that same quilt
her grandmother made so long ago. And as she lies there, Steph feels something. She hasn't felt
in a long time, a deep and settled calmness, a kind of.
that comes not from doing more but from doing less, from finally letting go of what she doesn't
need to carry anymore from knowing that all is well in this moment and that's all she
needs for only a moment she thinks once more of the colorful autumn leaves falling so
easily to the ground, making room for whatever beauty is bound to grow next. And it's with
that thought, Steph sinks deeper and deeper into the most peaceful and restorative sleep of her life.
