Now here's a quick word from our sponsors before tonight's episode begins. Hey there, my friend. Welcome to Sleep Escape and to tonight's relaxing bedtime story in which we're going to follow the journey of a bear as it prepares for hibernation. moving away from the busy, active months of summer and autumn.
Starting point is 00:01:39 And toward a season of profound stillness, this sleepy story is a bit like a nature documentary. Where nothing much happens, there's no plot, and you won't be left wondering how it ends, which means it's the perfect way to drift off. whenever you feel the tug of sleep, you can just let go. And for now,
Starting point is 00:02:15 you can just follow the sound of my voice. As we do a short sleep meditation, just to help wind you down before we explore the beautiful, mountainous landscape where our friend the bear lives and learn a little bit about the incredible biology
Starting point is 00:02:37 that allows these creatures to sleep through the coldest months of the year. So hopefully you've settled into a comfortable position in bed already. If not, go ahead and find your way there. For just a moment, I'd like you to leave your eyes open. And I know that seems a little counterintuitive, but this technique that I'm about to guide you through can be really effective to help you wind down, relax, and settle into sleep. So just rest your gaze there on the ceiling or the wall. Anything out in front of you that just offer something to rest the attention on. And you can just relax your eyes.
Starting point is 00:03:41 There's no need to strain. And from here, I'll count down from five. to one. And as I do, you can slowly allow your eyes to close. Feeling that weight slowly grow and take over. So we'll start at five, just resting your gaze there on whatever's across from you, beginning to gain some distance and space from the day just past. as we make our way to four,
Starting point is 00:04:40 and now you may begin to feel that subtle weight of your eyelids and the growing desire to let that weight take over, but just holding on for another moment as we come to three, and your eyes may begin to flicker here as that weight of your eyelids grows ever heavier as we reach two, and you can bang. resist that desire to close your eyes now, but just resisting for a few more seconds as we finally reach. One, allowing your eyes to close all the way down, feeling the muscles in and around
Starting point is 00:05:55 your eyes, softening as that sense of relaxation spreads through the muscles of your face, your jaw, your neck and shoulders, feeling that wave of relaxation, spreading down your arms, into your hands, and all the way to the tips of each and every finger. That sense of softness moves through your chest, your back. Just feeling every muscle relax and melt. as that wave moves through your thighs, your calves, and all the way to the tips of your toes. Now that this wave of relaxation has passed through your entire body, just imagine flipping the switch for your whole physical being from on all the way. And as you do,
Starting point is 00:08:07 feeling your whole body relax completely down deeper and deeper into the bed breathing slowly and deeply in through the nose holding for just a moment and then exhaling even slower back out just like that inhale each breath bringing you just that bit closer to sleep once more now, inhale and exhale. Just let the air fall out and you can just allow your breath to fall back into its own natural pace and depth. Whatever feels easy and effortless because that's exactly how your journey into sleep will be tonight and remember that we all fall asleep in our own way and on our own time, and you'll get there in exactly the best way for you. And all you have to do is keep breathing nice and easy, each one carrying you just one percent
Starting point is 00:10:39 deeper into relaxation and one percent closer to sleep. And in the meantime, you can just rest your attention on the sound of my voice. as you find some distance from the day just passed by allowing your imagination to carry you to a beautiful mountain meadow where the air is crisp and clean, scented with that sharp, refreshing perfume of evergreen trees. It's late autumn in the high mountain country. The sky is pale, frosted blue and the sun sits low on the horizon casting long golden shadows all across the valley here we find our friend the bear a large healthy grizzly with a coat the color of toasted oats it's moving through a stand of subalpine fir trees and right now, the bear is heavy.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Because over the last few weeks, as the days have grown shorter and the mountain huckleberries have disappeared, the bear's body began to send powerful signals called hyperphagia. This is a time of feasting for the bear. to prepare for the long fast that lies ahead. But that time of feasting has passed.
Starting point is 00:13:03 All the berries are gone. The bugs have burrowed deep. And our friend the bear is overtaken by a profound, heavy sense of lethargy. You might even feel a bit of that heaviness now as well. The way your limbs feels settled against the bed and your head sinks into the pillow. And our friend the bear is in no hurry. It moves with a slow, deliberate gate. Massive paws patting softly over an early dusting of snow. The bear is looking for the perfect place,
Starting point is 00:14:01 a spot that will stay dry, high enough on the mountain slope, where the spring melt won't flood the bear out, but sheltered enough to stay hidden from the wind and the worst of the cold winter. Eventually, after some wandering, our bear finds a rocky outcropping. Beneath the tangled roots of an ancient, Wind-swept cedar tree, the ground here is sloped, which makes it perfect for drainage with a slow, steady strength.
Starting point is 00:14:59 The bear begins to dig, removing dirt, paw by paw, its breathing is steady. The bear is focused. Moving soil and stone to create a tunnel that, leads into a rounded chamber. Once the den is fully dug, our bear lines the floor with boughs of fir tree and soft dry moss gathered from the valley floor. Interestingly enough, while we often think of hibernation as one long and continuous sleep, it's actually a very specialized state of being, unlike us, as we prepare for a night of rest. The bear is preparing for months, and yet this den isn't so different from your own bedroom, a dedicated space for safety,
Starting point is 00:16:23 warmth and complete surrender. Once the den is fully ready, the bear pauses at the entrance. Looking out, over the valley below, one last time for the year. The river meanders its way, like a ribbon of silver, and the mountain peaks across the valley,
Starting point is 00:16:59 are already white with snow. The bear's nose wiggles as it sniffs the air, feeling the cold wind on its snout. A final reminder of the outside world that it's about to leave behind for the time being at least. And with that, the bear crawls inside. The space is small, just large enough for its entire body. and this is intentional because a smaller space is easier to keep warm
Starting point is 00:17:57 with its own body heat. The bear turns around a few times rolling over just a bit here and there, settling its weight, ever so perfectly, into the soft bed of the den until it finds that perfect spot and every muscle in its body can finally let go and relax curls into a tight ball
Starting point is 00:18:47 tucking its nose under its paw and as it does so the bear's body begins to change You see, in our human sleep, our heart rate slows down quite a bit. But for the bear, the change is much more dramatic. It's heart, which might beat at 80 or 90 times a minute when it's running through a meadow, slows down to a rhythmic pulse of eight. to 19 beats per minute along with it the bear's breathing slows too it might take only one breath every 45 seconds it's the ultimate expression of calmness for now the bear has nothing left to do nothing to worry about it can just relax and release just like you in the
Starting point is 00:20:32 this very moment. And yet, there is a fascinating set of differences between the bear and us humans. Because when we enter deep sleep, we are often very difficult to wake. It stays in that state of lethargy. It's warm enough that if a curious animal were to accidentally wander into its den, The bear would wake up, move, and even defend itself. But for our bear, right now, all is safe and all as well. It's resting deeply and serenely, but still aware of its world in a quiet, instinctual way. And as the moments pass, its heartbeat slows. and its breath softens.
Starting point is 00:22:10 The bear settles even deeper. Its body temperature begins to drop. It doesn't plummet all the way to the level of the freezing air outside. Instead, it dips by about 8 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit. And interestingly, the bear keeps its core temperature around its heart and its brain, higher than the rest of its body, its brain remains functional,
Starting point is 00:22:57 tucked away in a warm, quiet sanctuary of empty thought and simple instinct while the rest of its physical body enters a period of suspended rest. You might even imagine
Starting point is 00:23:22 that it feels something like that, sensation of floating that we often feel when we're deeply at rest slowly begin to pass one by one just like the slow steady rhythm of the bear's breath and before long outside the den the first real blizzard of the year arrives the wind howls across the face of the mountain and the snow drifts begin to pile up sealing the entrance to the den with a thick insulating white blanket but inside the bear hears nothing but the silence inside the ground a friend the bear will stay just like this for months this is where the bear's by a biology becomes truly miraculous, something that scientists even study with the hope of one day helping humans. For the next five or six months, the bear won't eat. It won't drink a single drop of water.
Starting point is 00:25:33 It won't even use the bathroom. In a human, this would cause all kinds of problems. But in the bear, it's different because the bear's body is a master of recycling. It lives entirely off the stored fat from the autumn feast. And as that fat breaks down, its body produces water to keep the bear hydrated and energy to keep the bear's heart beating. Even more incredibly, its body takes the waste products that would normally harm the kidneys and turns them back into amino acids, the building blocks of protein. And because of this, the bear won't lose its muscle mass.
Starting point is 00:26:51 So while a human lying still, for even just a matter of days, would wake up weak, The bear will emerge months from now in the spring, nearly as strong as it went in. Bones stay strong too. It avoids the thinning of bones, even though it isn't moving at all. And in this way, our friend the bear is a miracle of biology. Though it may be in different ways,
Starting point is 00:27:39 your body is too because while you sleep your brain is tidying up the thoughts and experiences of the day your muscles are repairing themselves your brain is removing toxins and your immune system is standing guard you can trust your body to do this work while you simply exist And that's really quite beautiful, isn't it? In some dens on other parts of the mountain, there's a bit more activity. A mother bear, several miles away, having also settled into her den earlier in the winter, is no longer alone in the deepest part of winter, usually in January. She's given birth to a few tiny little cubs.
Starting point is 00:29:09 They're about the size of a stick of butter, and they can't even see yet. But while the mother remains in her state of half sleep, her body provides for them. The cubs huddle against her for warmth, nursing and growing rapidly, protected from the sub-zero world outside by their mother and the thick walls of the dead. So by the time the sun begins to warm the mountain in the spring,
Starting point is 00:29:57 those tiny cubs will be strong enough to follow her out into the light hour bear. Tonight is about solitude and the great rest. So our friendly bear lies still now. The world filled with noise, other animals, troubles and worries, as miles away and far off in the distant future. Just like you, in your bed right now, there's only the peace and quiet here. In the darkness of the den,
Starting point is 00:31:01 and the slowing rhythm of the breath. The cold won't bother our bear here. The wind can't touch it. There's nothing to do, nothing to worry about. No stressors. No problems. Our friend the bear has done everything needed. It's prepared.
Starting point is 00:31:51 It's eaten well. It's built its cozy shelter. and now has nothing left to do. But wait for the world to turn. And that's just like you, with all of the tasks of the day, long behind you. The sun has disappeared for the night,
Starting point is 00:32:31 has settled into stillness, and like our friend the bear, you've settled into your den, of your blankets, completely safe, and secure. So just let your imagination drift over that mountain now
Starting point is 00:33:05 as it stands tall under a canopy of brilliant icy stars. The trees are heavy with snow. Their branches bowing low toward the ground. Everything is hushed. And still, even the river
Starting point is 00:33:47 is starting to freeze over at the edges. Neat the snow. The bear is like a part of the mountain itself tucked into the earth. It's breath a tiny little plume of warmth. And our bear is simply being. It's resting.
Starting point is 00:34:29 Drifting. It isn't thinking about the huckleberries of last year. or the salmon of next year. Our friend the bear is simply being, existing. And with that sense of peace, the bear softens even deeper and deeper down. Because there's no hurry to sleep. Winter is long and there's plenty of time for rest. The world will wait for you on the other side.
Starting point is 00:35:39 for now, you and the bear are moving into that deep, restorative space where time doesn't matter. Your sleep is a gift you get to give to yourself each and every night. A natural rhythm as old as the mountains and as certain as the seasons. And as certain as the seasons, and you've earned this sleep, you deserve it. And not only that, it's naturally built into who you are. So whether you're fast asleep already or you're still conscious of my voice, it's perfectly fine. There's no need to be frustrated or worried about when or how you're,
Starting point is 00:37:13 might fall asleep because just like the bear rests differently from us we humans rest a bit differently from each other too so just let go allow yourself to soften down and as you continue sinking deeper and deeper towards sleep your own state of hibernation just allow you allow you to you know your body to soften completely. Let it be heavy and still take a slow breath in and as you exhale, release all tension. Sink even deeper into the bed. Let your muscles relax, soften your face, surrender to the bed beneath you. Allow your thoughts to drift more distant. and slow. Remember that the day is done.
Starting point is 00:39:45 You have nothing to do, but relax. And that's such a nice feeling, isn't it? In this moment, choose stillness and peace, because all is well. Let go of everything you're still holding on to. Breathe in, calmness, and breathe out. The day just passed. Have no fear or frustration. If you haven't fallen asleep just yet,
Starting point is 00:41:11 we all fall asleep in our own way and on our own time. Know that with each breath, you're moving just that bit closer to sleep. For now, you are safe and warm. All is well. and you can just enjoy this moment of peace and quiet. It's time to rest. So allow yourself to drift farther and farther away.
Starting point is 00:42:45 Deeper and deeper into sleep, knowing that the more you give yourself permission to let go, the more easily sleep will come. Just relax that little bit more with each passing breath, slowly drifting, deeper and deeper. Allow your body to soften completely. Let it be heavy and still. Take a slow breath in.
Starting point is 00:44:10 And as you exhale, release all tension sink even deeper into the bed let your muscles relax soften your face surrender to the bed beneath you allow your thoughts to drift more distant and slow remember that the day is done you have nothing to do but relax and that's such a a nice feeling, isn't it?
