When you look at Aaron's life during that season, it was already fragile.
She and John had been through a miscarriage, endless deployments, and the usual struggles
of young marriage.
They were both emotionally exhausted.
The love was there, sure, but so was the pain, and instead of closing the distance between
them, that pain had stretched the gap even wider.
And in that space, right in that vulnerable crack, someone else stepped in.
That someone was Chris Lee
Chris at the base
Now, Chris wasn't exactly the golden boy of the Marines
He had a reputation that followed him everywhere he went
His peers didn't fully trust him, some said he was careless with weapons, others whispered he had a bad temper and didn't take criticism well
There were even stories of him being scolded by a superior officer for doing something reckless with
the rocket launcher. Yeah, you read that right. A rocket launcher. That's not the kind of tool you
want to see handled by someone with poor judgment. After that, the unease around him only grew.
Because of these issues, Chris started getting fewer assignments than the other guys. While John and
Connor were often sent away on missions, Chris ended up staying behind on base more often. That meant he
had time, lots of it. Time to linger, time to hang around, and time to get closer to
Aaron. A darker side of Chris. Ashlyn and Connor, who once considered Chris a friend,
began noticing some pretty disturbing behavior. His idea of a joke was off, like really off.
One day, for instance, Chris snuck up behind Connor, put him in a chokehold without warning,
and immobilized him.
Connor barely had time to process what was happening before Chris whispered,
I could snap your neck right now,
and you wouldn't even know who was behind you.
Then he laughed, let go, and walked away as if it had been nothing more than a prank.
Connor didn't find it funny.
Neither did Ashlyn.
That was the moment they stopped feeling safe around him.
From then on, the Malikis kept their guard up,
their smiles polite but tight whenever Chris was in the room.
Aaron's blind spot.
But Aaron was different.
She didn't see the menace.
She never had.
Her heart was wired to assume the best in people,
to give them the benefit of the doubt even when the red flags were practically waving in her face.
To her, Chris wasn't dangerous, he was someone who understood her sadness.
Whenever they went together to the non-profit horse ranch, the one Isabella Megal ran, Aaron found
herself opening up to him. At first, it was small talk, how tired she felt, how she missed John
when he was gone, how marriage was harder than she had imagined. But those conversations grew
heavier. Chris became the ear she needed, the shoulder she leaned on.
Isabella would later say that she noticed something in the air between them.
Nothing obvious, but enough for her to think, hmm, that feels like more than friendship.
She didn't interfere, though.
She assumed, hoped, really, that they'd keep it professional.
A Dangerous Shift
Despite the cracks in her marriage, Aaron still held on to her friendships with Ashland and Nicole.
The three of them spent hours together, watching movies, playing video games, or just talking about life.
Their routines were comforting, little rituals that filled the long stretches when their husbands were away.
The problem was, John was away more than anyone else.
His deployments kept him gone for weeks at a time, and Aaron was left alone, emotionally raw, and increasingly reliant on the company of others.
One night, the three women were watching a horror movie.
Aaron wasn't a big fan of scary films, they got under her skin.
After a while, she excused herself, saying she'd rather play video games in the other room.
Chris, who had been half watching the movie with zero interest, followed her.
It was there, in that separate space, controllers in hand, that something shifted.
Maybe it was the way Chris leaned in.
Maybe it was the way Aaron wanted, needed, someone to look at her, to see her.
But in that quiet moment, they kissed.
Ashland's eyes.
What they didn't know was that Ashland had walked in.
She had been heading over to ask them something, only to freeze when she saw it,
Aaron and Chris, lips locked, a secret spilling into the open.
Shocked, she backed away quietly, unseen.
For Ashland, it was devastating.
She already distrusted Chris, but Aaron.
Aaron was her friend, the sweet, trustworthy girl she never had.
imagined would betray John. That kiss wasn't just a mistake, it was a betrayal. For Aaron, though,
it felt different. She told some childhood friends later that the kiss gave her life new meaning.
After months of grief, loneliness, and feeling unseen, here was someone who said he understood
her, who made her feel wanted again. As for Chris, no one really knew what it meant to him.
Maybe it was just lust, maybe it was ego, maybe it was more.
What was clear is that after that night, they started sneaking around.
The kiss wasn't the end, it was the beginning.
The Secret Affair
Aaron was still married to John.
Chris was still married to Nicole.
But the boundaries blurred.
They found ways to meet in secret, to slip away under the radar.
Their relationship crossed into intimacy, into a full-blown affair.
Nicole wasn't blind.
She saw changes in her husband, distance, distraction, little cracks in his usual patterns.
Concerned, she confided in Ashland, saying she thought Chris needed therapy.
He hadn't been the same since Afghanistan, she explained.
His temper was shorter, his moods darker, and now he was shutting her out completely.
The rumors in the unit didn't help.
People were whispering that Chris might be discharged because of his reckless handling of weapons.
Complaints from his colleagues were piling up, claims that he had endangered them on more than one occasion.
Nicole's discovery
Eventually, Nicole's suspicion turned into action.
One day, she picked up Chris's phone and started scrolling.
What she found confirmed her worst fears.
a string of messages between Chris and Aaron.
Messages that weren't just friendly,
they were romantic, intimate, unmistakably incriminating.
Fury exploded inside her.
She confronted Chris head on, screaming, crying, demanding answers.
Then she turned her rage toward Aaron.
In front of everyone, she shouted threats,
swearing that if Aaron ever came near Chris again,
she'd kill her.
It was chaos.
And yet, surprisingly, the fallout wasn't what you'd expect.
Neither marriage ended.
Instead, both couples seemed to grit their teeth and decide they'd try to move past it.
The trust was shattered, sure, but they acted as if salvaging their relationships was still possible.
A visit from Lore
Amid the storm, Aaron had something else on her calendar, a visit from her.
her mother, Lor. The trip had been planned for a while, and Aaron threw herself into the
preparations. Maybe, she thought, having her mom there would help. Maybe Lorr could give her and
John the guidance they needed to patch things up. John welcomed the idea too. He respected his mother-in-law
and hoped her presence might bring stability back into their chaotic lives.
Meanwhile, the affairs seemed to fizzle, or at least go underground.
On the surface, it looked like Chris and Aaron had cut things off.
But beneath that, a dangerous secret was still alive.
The Positive Test
On June 22nd, 2014, Aaron took a pregnancy test.
Positive.
This time, though, she didn't rush to John.
She told Chris first.
To her childhood friend, she can fight.
how excited Chris seemed when she shared the news. He told her he wanted to meet, that he had a surprise plan for her. He even talked about leaving Nicole and raising his daughter together with Aaron. It sounded like a fantasy, like the start of a new life. Aaron was over the moon. She and her friend speculated wildly about what the surprise might be. Was it a ring? A proposal? The next chapter she had been waiting for.
The Joshua Tree Meeting
Chris set the date, June 28, 2014.
Just a few days before Lor was scheduled to arrive for her visit.
He told Nicole he was going coyote hunting at Joshua Tree National Park,
a sprawling desert landscape not far from the base.
Aaron agreed to meet him there, eager for what she believed was the turning point of her life.
Neither she nor anyone else could have predicted how tragically wrong that decision would turn out to be.
To be continued.
