Starting point is 00:00:00 The sound echoed again, just as clear and sharp as a church bell, but this time from deep within the stairwell. Justin froze, goosebumps rising on his skin. It wasn't just a noise, it was a sensation, a deep, hollow rush of air that sent a cold trickle of fear down his back. It sounded like wind howling through a tunnel, except lower, deeper, almost like the slow, patient exhale of something enormous. He stood at the top of the stairs, barely breathing, his indefing, his indefereux.
Starting point is 00:00:30 instinct screaming for him to back away. Then he saw it, movement, just a flicker of something long and thin snaking across the basement floor. It moved smoothly and silently, like a stream of ink and water, slithering through shadows that seemed too dark to belong to a normal basement. It was a snake. Not your average garden snake either, no, this thing looked prehistoric, the kind of creature they'd lock behind triple-reinforced glass at a reptile house. Just as Justin was trying to figure out what the hell a creature like that was doing under a school, the thing suddenly jerked backward, its tail yanked hard by something unseen. Its head smacked against the bottom step with a grotesque thud. Then came the sound again. Louder. Clearer. And now, unmistakably satisfied. Justin staggered back a step, eyes wide, not daring to blink.
Starting point is 00:01:25 Nothing else moved below. Two more steps and he'd be out of sight, he could turn, walk away, pretend none of this had happened. He took another cautious step. Still nothing. One more, and he'd be free. He stepped, and the floorboard beneath him let out aloud, groaning creak like the bellow of a dying tree. The noise from the basement changed, became sharp and abrupt. A snort. Animalistic. Aggressive. Justin didn't wait to find out more. He spun on his heel and bolted down the hallway, tearing past open classroom doors where confused students turned their heads to stare. He burst through the front doors into the crisp autumn air, gasping for breath, his legs trembling as he collapsed against a tree just outside the school. He tried to catch his breath, heart hammering like a jackhammer against his ribs.
Starting point is 00:02:22 Was he losing it? Hallucinating. What the hell had he just seen? Why was there a massive serpent under the school? And more importantly, what in God's name had yanked it back like it was nothing more than a rope? He bit down on a fingernail so hard he tasted blood. I'm fine. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:02:43 I'm just, imagining things. You're more than fine, Fonzie, especially from this angle. Justin nearly jumped out of his skin. He whipped around to see Darcy. walking toward him with a mischievous grin. But something about her was, off. Dust clung to her clothes, her normally neat hair was tangled like she'd rolled around in an attic, and there was some weird gray smudge on her chin.
Starting point is 00:03:09 He blinked at her like she was a ghost. His mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. Her grin faded, her eyes serious now. Look, Justin. You're sweet. Really. This protective big brother thing you've got going on. It's kind of adorable.
Starting point is 00:03:30 But I don't need saving. He started to protest, but she held up a finger. I know you think David's dangerous. And maybe you've seen some things. But he's not what you think. Yeah, he's cocky. But he's harmless. I've got this.
Starting point is 00:03:50 She tapped his cheek gently. Time for you to find another girl to obsess over. And maybe, switch up your strategy first. Justin opened his mouth again, but stopped as he spotted something in her hair. You've got to, wait, don't move. He pointed to a long, squirming centipede woven into her curls. Without flinching, Darcy reached up and plucked it free like it was a stray leaf. She said it gently on the ground and gave a sly giggle.
Starting point is 00:04:20 I was hoping you wouldn't notice. Then she turned and walked back toward the music building. pausing at the steps to flash him another wink. Don't worry, Justin. Everything's perfect. She walked backward up the steps with the poise of a ballerina and the mischief of a snake. Justin slumped beneath the tree, his brain spinning. If everything really was perfect, why did it feel like he just barely escaped being eaten alive?
Starting point is 00:04:48 Later that night, David and Darcy sat alone on the football bleachers under a sky full of stars. David traced gentle lines along the side of Darcy's neck with two fingers. They kissed, slow and unhurried, while her hand rested lightly on his chest. He brushed a strand of hair away from her face. There's something I've been meaning to tell you. You've changed your mind about asking me to homecoming, she teased. He laughed. No way.
Starting point is 00:05:18 I'm still going with you. Then I guess I'd better start shopping for a dress. David looked away for a moment, lips pressed together. I haven't always treated people right. Especially girls. I've been selfish, careless. I broke hearts without even noticing. But with you, it's different.
Starting point is 00:05:41 You make me want to be better. I just want to make you happy. Darcy studied his face, her expression unreadable. Is that everything you wanted to say? He nodded. then thank you. That means a lot to me. She kissed him softly, then leaned close to whisper, want to get out of here. I know a place. David didn't hesitate. From behind the library, Justin emerged just in time to see the pair crossing the parking lot toward David's car.
Starting point is 00:06:13 He looked away, biting his lip, fighting the rising frustration. Despite everything, David had one again. Another girl charmed, another lie sold. As Justin walked toward his bike, he caught a glimpse of David opening the trunk. Under the light of the moon, he saw something glint in David's hand before it disappeared into his waistband. Justin froze. Was that a gun? His heart skipped. David shut the trunk and slid into the driver's seat, and Justin gripped his handlebars in a white-knuckled grip. Maybe it wasn't a gun. Maybe it was something else. But even if there was just a chance, he couldn't ignore it. Not again. Not after what happened to Kelly. With blood seeping from his bitten fingertips, Justin jumped onto his bike and peddled after
Starting point is 00:07:05 them. David's Thunderbird rolled into the shadows of an abandoned military barracks, headlights cutting off as they parked. The place was quiet, secluded, surrounding it. by rusted fencing and cracked pavement. Cool spot, Darcy whispered. What is this place? Old radar sight. From back in the war. She smiled. Groovy. They kissed again, David's hand unbuttoning the top of her blouse. But Darcy gently placed a hand on his chest. Hold up. He blinked at her. I'm not ready to go that far, she said calmly. He pulled back. He pulled back, visibly frustrated. What? You were all over me earlier. I brought us here because you said, I said I liked privacy. Not groping. He hit the steering wheel in frustration. You led me on.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Maybe. But you're not entitled to anything. Let me ask you something, exactly how special am I to you? What the hell kind of question is that? Back on the field, you said I, changed you. That you wanted to be better. That I make you happy. Was that real? Or just a line you've used before? David stared at her, jaw clenched. Darcy leaned back in her seat, totally relaxed. Because if you meant it, you'll respect my boundaries. If not, well, she turned and looked at him. Not scared. Not vulnerable. She looked ready. To be. To be. You know. be continued.
