Starting point is 00:00:00 Zach was running. Not jogging, not speedwalking, he was straight up on the move like his life depended on it. Because it kind of did. The cuffs were off, the jumpsuit was still clinging to his skin, and his heart was pounding so hard it felt like his chest was going to blow open. He'd done it, broken out. Nobody thought he had it in him, not even himself half the time, but here he was, breathing in cold air and feeling the insane mix of terror and freedom coursing through his veins. And there was one thing, and only one thing, burning in his brain like fire, Maddie. Seven months. That's how long it had been since he'd seen her. Since that day in court when the gavel came down like thunder and shattered their lives. That day replayed in his mind
Starting point is 00:00:48 like a stuck record every night in that cell. Maddie crying, mouthing, I love you. You. You're as he was dragged away. He'd sworn to himself that if he ever got out, no matter what it took, he'd get back to her. And now, now was that moment. The sound of tires on gravel snapped him out of his thoughts. A car rolled up slow, like a predator sneaking on its prey. The black 2009 Chevy Impala blended with the night so well it was almost invisible until the headlights flicked for a second and shut off again. Zach, a voice whispered harshly from the driver. side. Zach ducked low and sprinted to the car, yanking open the door and sliding in so fast it felt like his bones were still catching up. Holy hell, man. You actually pulled it off, said
Starting point is 00:01:37 Corey, his best friend since they were kids playing basketball in the park. Corrie was gripping the wheel so tight his knuckles were white. Thanks, bro, Zach breathed out, still trying to calm his pulse. No problem. Where to? I gotta go see Maddie. That's the whole damn reason I'm out. I can't wait another day. I need to see her. Corrie gave him a side eye, raising an eyebrow. All right. You're sure about this? Because you know they'll be watching her place if they figure out you're gone, they don't know yet. And I'm not going to let them stop me anyway, Zach said, his voice hard. She's the only thing that kept me from going insane in there. All right, all right.
Starting point is 00:02:23 You're the boss. You'll have to show me where she stays, though. Never been there. It's the next town up north. Fifteen, maybe twenty minutes. Zach glanced into the back seat and spotted a duffel bag. He yanked it up like it was a treasure chest. These the clothes I asked for.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Yes, sir. Just like you said, perfect. Ain't no way I'm strolling into Maddies in this bright orange prison suit. Gonna have to pull over so I can change, though, Corey chuckled dryly. Don't worry. I know a good spot, and I'm going to bury this damn thing. No evidence left behind. Fifteen minutes later, Corey's car rolled quietly into a roadside park off Highway 276.
Starting point is 00:03:11 It was one of those half-forgotten spots, rusty swings, cracked asphalt on the basketball court, and no lights anywhere. Here's your changing room, sir, Corey said with a smirk. Zach didn't waste time. He grabbed the clothes out of the bag and stripped down in the cold night air, shivering as he pulled on a black Luke Bryan Tour t-shirt and light gray athletic shorts. It was freezing out, barely 40 degrees, but he didn't care. A red University of Georgia Bulldogs hat went on his head, and for a second, he felt human again.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Man, I missed this hat, Zach muttered. Got it signed by Tyrese Wilkins back in college. Good to see you still appreciate the important things, Corey joked. Zach shredded the jumpsuit with a knife, stuffed the pieces into a plastic grocery bag, and walked it to the river. He watched it sink into the dark water, swallowed by the current. All right, he said when he got back to the car. Let's get me to Maddie.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Meanwhile, Maddie was in her apartment, oblivious to the chaos unraveling outside her little world. She just stepped out of the shower, the steam still clinging to her bathroom mirror. Every day, every single day, she missed Zach more than she thought was even possible. She counted down the months, the weeks, the days like her life depended on it. His sentence was eight months. Eight. But she swore she'd wait for him. No matter what ever.
Starting point is 00:04:42 Anyone said. She knew he was innocent, everyone who truly knew him did. She wrapped herself in a towel, cursing under her breath because she'd left her robe in the bedroom. That's when there was a knock at the door. Harper, she called out, assuming it was her best friend. Doors unlocked. I'll be out in a minute. She patted out of the bathroom, still towel-wrapped, her wet hair dripping on the floor. When she rounded the corner, her eyes fell on Corey standing awkwardly near the front door. Oh, Maddie said, startled. Hi, Corey. What are you doing here? But Corey didn't answer. He just pointed towards the door. Maddie turned her head and froze. Her towel hit the floor, but she didn't even notice. Zach stood there in the doorway, grinning like a fool.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Hey, baby, he said softly. Maddie let out a sound that was half sob, half scream, and sprinted across the room. She slammed into him so hard he nearly fell back, but he caught her, wrapping his arms tight around her. They stood there, tangled up in each other, as if letting go would kill them both. Corey flopped onto the couch, pulling out his phone to give them space. He scrolled aimlessly, pretending not to hear the muffled laughter and whispered, words coming from the other side of the room. Eventually, Maddie and Zach retreated into the bedroom. Maddie's voice floated out. Corrie, you can stay the night if you want.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Couch is yours. Thanks, he called back. I'll probably head out early. Zach poked his head out for a second. Appreciate everything, bro don't think I'll need anything else. Most of my stuff still hear from before, you know, all right, man. Get some rest, Corey said. The bedroom door clicked shut. Two hours passed. Corrie tossed and turned on the couch, staring at the ceiling. The apartment was quiet except for faint giggles and murmurs from behind the bedroom door. He didn't want to think about what was happening in there, but his brain didn't exactly cooperate. Finally, unable to sleep, he got up, grabbed a banana and a bottle of cheese. cherry Pepsi from the fridge and stepped outside into the night. And that night was just the
Starting point is 00:07:08 beginning. Zach wasn't safe. Not even close. But for the first time in months, he felt alive.
