Ella and Tanya were wrecked.
Like, absolutely, completely, soul deep exhausted.
You could see it in the way their shoulders slumped
and how their suitcases seemed heavier than they actually were.
After a long flight that felt like it stole ten years off their lives,
they finally made it to Rosa's Airbnb on Franklin Ridge Drive.
The house was warm.
Not warm like temperature, though the El Paso Desert Heat wasn't playing around either,
but warm like the sound of kids laughing faintly in another room, warm like the smell of something baking,
warm like Rosa herself. Rosa greeted them at the door, all bright eyes and a smile that could make
even the grumpiest traveler melt. She had this energy about her that screamed, your family now.
Deal with it, welcome, Chikas. Rosa said, ushering them inside. The house had this cozy
lived in feel, with mismatched throw pillows and little plants on every window so.
Tanya thought it smelled faintly like cinnamon, while Ella swore it smelled like vanilla.
Either way, it felt good to finally stop moving. Rosa led them to their room.
It was a simple setup, a queen bed for Ella and a twin for Tanya.
I hope this works for you girls, Rosa said warmly. Perfect, Tanya managed with a tired smile.
Ella didn't even speak, she just dropped her backpack and face-planted onto the queen bed.
You two get some sleep, Rosa said. You're safe here, and sleep they did.
Both of them were out by 9 p.m., the soft hum of the house blending into their dreams.
El Paso adventures would have to wait until morning. The next morning, sunlight punched
through the blinds like it owned the place. Ella squinted at the glow and let out a dramatic groan
as she stretched her arms. Then, right on cue. Achoo, it was loud enough to startle Tanya awake.
Really, Ella? Tanya mumbled, rubbing her eyes. I always sneeze first thing, Ella grumbled back,
half amused and half annoyed at her own body. Sorry, dude. Now the room probably smells like my sneeze.
Tanya waved a hand lazily. Whatever. I can survive. It can survive. It's a
Except, there was a smell.
Kind of sweet and kind of gross at the same time.
Tanya wrinkled her nose.
Okay, I hate to admit it, but it does smell weird.
Like, honey and morning breath.
Ew, gross, Ella said, laughing.
Tanya got up and opened the window, letting in the fresh desert air.
Much better.
After freshening up in the shared bathroom, which was charmingly decorated with sea-themed trinkets,
they headed to the kitchen, where Rosa had breakfast waiting,
breakfast tacos piled high with scrambled eggs and refried beans.
Ella's face lit up.
Oh my God.
Tacos for breakfast.
This is heaven.
Eat, eat, eat.
Rosa encouraged.
Tanya dug in, washing it all down with a strong cup of coffee.
Ella, on the other hand, opted for water.
I'm not a coffee person, she confessed.
More for me, Tanya said with a smirk. After breakfast, Rosa chauffered them in her old but reliable van.
Call me when you're done exploring, she told them as she dropped them off at Utep.
Have fun, Chikas, Gracius, Rosa. Ella called as they hopped out. The University of Texas at El Paso was first on their list.
Ella and Tanya had this goal of seeing every single building on campus, no matter how pointless.
Let's start at Hudspeth Hall, Tanya said, pulling up a campus map.
They made it their personal mission to ride every elevator they could find.
American elevators are so much bigger and nicer than back home, Ella said, genuinely impressed.
Right?
Like, they feel.
I don't know, luxurious.
Tanya added,
Imagine if they had music playing in here, Ella said, striking a goofy dance pose as the elevator dinged open.
As they wandered around, they started noticing weird posters on bulletin boards.
One headline read, Bobby and the milkshake sneeze. What the hell?
Tanya said, pointing at it. That sounds like a fever dream, Ella replied.
Another poster was even stranger, angry Prosper customer throws rocks at gas station. They both cracked
up. What is happening in this city? Tanya said between giggles. At the UGLC
building, they overheard a professor giving a fiery lecture about psychology and the law.
Curious, they slipped into the back of the lecture hall and tried to blend in.
And that's why context matters so much in El Paso's borderland community, the professor was
saying passionately.
Ella leaned toward Tanya and whispered, this feels like high school.
I don't know why, but Utep has strong high school vibes.
Tanya nodded in agreement.
It does.
Staffordshire back home felt more like a real university, bigger, spread out, less, intimate.
Before Ella could respond, Tanya sneezed.
Loudly.
A chew, the professor stopped mid-sentence and, over the microphone, said, bless you,
the entire class turned to stare.
Tanya's face went crimson.
We're leaving, she muttered to Ella, grabbing her arm.
They decided to grab lunch at the student union and settled on pizza.
Hut. Ordering turned into a mini-adventure because the cashier spoke limited English.
Luckily, Ella's Spanish came to the rescue. Those pizzas mediana's, poor favor, she said
smoothly. Dang, you're useful, Tanya teased. Useful and hungry, Ella shot back. But finding a place to
sit was impossible. Every single table was taken. In the end, they carried their pizza to the Fox Fine
arts building and crashed in an empty practice room. As they ate, they were treated to the sounds of
someone practicing trumpet in the room next door. That's, actually kind of nice, Tanya said between
bites. Yeah, we should hire Jarvis to serenade us every meal, Ella joked. Later, they headed to the
library. The fifth floor was eerily quiet, perfect for recharging. Or so they thought. A chew,
Ella's sneeze echoed through the room like a gunshot.
Worse, a tiny mist of spit accompanied it.
A stern librarian appeared out of nowhere, like some kind of sneeze-detecting ninja.
The rule here is that all sneezes must be stifled so that the area does not smell, she whispered
fiercely.
Ella gawked at her.
Stifled.
To avoid smell, Tanya bit her lip to keep from laughing.
Okay, let's just, leave.
They spent the rest of a few.
afternoon exploring more campus buildings, the nursing building, Belle Hall with its cool
architecture, and the administration building which looked intimidating as hell. They paused
outside Prospect Hall and marveled at a poster in the psychology department featuring a faculty
member named Mr. Alvarez. Look at that guy's hair. Goals, Ella said. Total goals, Tanya agreed.
As the sun began to dip, they decided to hop on the brio bus and head downtown.
Both of them were worn out but buzzing with excitement.
What do you think downtown El Paso is like?
Tanya asked.
Guess we're about to find out, Ella replied.
To be continued.
