So when I tell you our place was completely swallowed up by forest, I mean it, like really buried in woods. Not just some patch of trees behind the house kind of thing, but miles and miles of green, stretching way past where your eyes could see. This forest, according to the locals, was supposedly bigger than the entire UK. Imagine that. Trees for days.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Places to disappear. Honestly, perfect for someone looking to hide something. or someone. We moved out there when I was just a kid, seven years old, back in 1994. My little brother Jerry wasn't even a thought yet, he wouldn't show up for another two years. So, for a while, it was just me, my parents, and Jack, our big, lovable golden retriever. That dog was basically my sidekick. Anytime I wandered out into the woods or joined my dad for a little fishing at the nearby river, Jack was right there trotting beside me like he was my furry shadow. This whole thing I'm about to tell you. It happened in the summer of 1995. I remember it clear as day. Jack and I were out
Starting point is 00:02:12 hiking this trail that started behind our house. It wasn't new to me, I'd walked it before but never really went deep into the forest. That day, something felt off almost from the jump. We weren't even ten minutes in when Jack suddenly stopped, ears perked, and let out a low growl. What is it, boy? I asked, like I was in a bad movie. Jack looked at me, and there was something weird in his eyes, kind of sad, kind of scared. Then he just bolted, tail between his legs, straight back toward the house. Jack. Get back here. I yelled, but he was gone. Just like that. I didn't think think much of it at the time, again, I was seven. Maybe he saw a raccoon or got spooked by a squirrel or something. So I kept walking, even though I probably shouldn't have. After a few more minutes,
Starting point is 00:03:08 I decided not to push my luck. Without Jack, the woods felt bigger, creepier. So I stopped, grabbed a stick, and drew a giant X into the dirt. Just a little marker so I'd know how far I'd gone if I ever came back. I turned around to head home, and that's when I saw her. Standing maybe 20 yards off the trail half hidden among the trees, was this girl. She looked about my age, maybe a little younger. Her hair was long and black, hanging over her face like something out of a horror flick. She had on this white and blue dress, old-fashioned looking, kind of tattered. Um, hello. Who are you? I called. I called. I called. She didn't say a word.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Just lifted one hand and pointed down at the ground next to her before skipping off deeper into the forest. And I just stood there, heart pounding. I didn't feel scared, not yet, anyway, just, confused. Who was this girl? We were literally the only family living this far out in the woods. I'd never seen another kid wandering around, ever. I finally snapped out of it and decided to check the spot. she pointed to. I knelt down, brushed away some dry leaves, and spotted something poking
Starting point is 00:04:28 out of the dirt. It was a sneaker. Old and muddy. Definitely a kid size. My seven-year-old brain went into detective mode. Maybe she lost her shoes out here. Maybe if I found both, I could give them to my mom, and we could figure out who she was. Maybe she was lost and needed help. I dug a little deeper, hoping to find the second shoe. My fingers hit something solid. Not rubbery like a shoe, more like bone. I scraped away more dirt. And then I saw it.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Two empty eye socket staring up at me from the ground. I had just uncovered a human skull. I froze. Every muscle in my body locked up. Then I did what any kid would do, I screamed, turned tail, and sprinted all the way home, tears flying off my face like raindrops. Burst into the kitchen, breathless, and told my mom what I saw. She gave me that, sure, honey, look, probably thought I was being dramatic.
Starting point is 00:05:34 But she said she'd tell Dad when he got home. The next day, I took my dad to the spot. I stayed on the trail while he stepped off into the woods and checked the whole eye dug. He was back in minutes. didn't say a word at first then finally we need to call the police a couple hours later
Starting point is 00:05:54 we had cruisers in the driveway I found out later that what I'd stumbled across was the body of a girl who had gone missing over 15... They're much more likely to smoke when they're older too. So take a deep breath and talk to them today. Get the facts about vaping and nicotine. Visit hse.i.e forward slash vaping from the HSE. Years earlier.
Starting point is 00:07:04 I told everyone, the cops, my parents, about the girl I saw pointing at the ground. But they all brushed it off like it was just my imagination, a trick of the woods. I guess I don't blame them. Kids do make stuff up. But I wasn't making this up. I wouldn't have started digging right there unless someone, something, showed me where.
Starting point is 00:07:27 To this day, I believe I saw her spirit. And she was just waiting for someone to find her. Years passed, but that memory stuck like glue. And it wasn't the last creepy thing that ever happened to me. Not by a long shot. Fast forward about eight years. I was 15, living with my two sisters, Claire and Amelia. One night, we decided to have a little sleepover in the living room.
Starting point is 00:07:56 Claire was 20, Amelia just seven. I snagged the recliner, Amelia had a mattress on the floor, and Claire took the couch. We stayed up late, talking about school, friends, whatever random things popped into our heads. Eventually, one by one, we drifted off. I woke up to a sound I couldn't place at first, like soft tapping. I turned my head toward the window. The curtains were mostly drawn, but I could see through a little gap. There was someone standing right outside.
Starting point is 00:08:29 I froze. Then they crouched. And I peeked through the slit in the curtain, staring right at me. My heart stopped. Were they watching us the whole time? Could they see me? I didn't want to alert them. I slowly turned toward the back of the chair and covered myself with the blanket, praying they'd just leave.
Starting point is 00:08:51 Nope. A loud bang shook the window. I peaked again. The person was still there, pounding harder now. Not trying to sneak. Just full on slamming their fists. Amelia woke up and started crying. That snapped me out of it.
Starting point is 00:09:10 I jumped up, scooped her into it. my arms and rushed toward Claire. Problem was, the couch was against the same wall as the window. Great hiding spot, right? I tried shaking Claire awake. Nothing. She took sleeping pills for a disorder, same as our dad, so once she was out, it was like trying to wake a rock. Claire. Wake up. I whispered loudly. Nothing. She mumbled something like, go away. Then came the cracking sound. The window was starting to break. I yanked Claire's hair.
Starting point is 00:09:49 Nothing. No time left. Glass shattered. The guy flung himself through the window, crashing onto the floor. We ran. I grabbed Amelia and bolted to the basement, hiding behind a half wall. Not ideal, but better than nothing. Upstairs, footsteps shuffled, then silence.
Starting point is 00:10:11 minutes felt like hours. Then, sirens. Two cops burst into the basement. Claire had cuts from the glass but was otherwise okay. The guy. Gone. Slipped away before the cops showed up. To this day, he's never been caught. We think it was a neighbor, or someone staying nearby.
Starting point is 00:10:35 No one ever fessed up. But a guy with glass in his neck isn't exactly easy to hide. That wasn't the last close call either. Let me take you back even further, early 80s, small-town Texas, just outside Austin. I was five years old. Crime. Practically unheard of. Parents used to leave kids in the car while running errands.
Starting point is 00:11:01 Different times, for sure. We had this big old Buickla Sabra, cream-colored, two-door, brown vinyl top. Very retro. Windows were electric. That's important. One day, my mom and I went grocery shopping. My older brother stayed home. I decided to wait in the car.
Starting point is 00:11:24 Mom cracked the windows halfway and went inside. I chilled in the front seat for a while, just watching people come and go. Then a red pickup with a camper pulled in next to us. The driver didn't get out. Just sat there. Staring. He looked at me, looked away, looked at me again. My gut told me something was wrong. I wanted to roll up the window, but I didn't have the keys. I climbed into the back seat, just to put space between us. Then he opened his door. Still looking at me. Still scanning the lot. My little brain was in overdrive. Fight or flight. No way he could pull me through the window, it was. was cracked, but not wide enough. If he opened the door, I'd bolt out the other side. He reached
Starting point is 00:12:18 for the lock. And then, like a superhero, my mom appeared, pushing a cart full of groceries. I yanked the door open and ran to her. The guy peeled out of the lot like his life depended on it. We never saw him again. I don't know who he was or what he wanted. But I know it wasn't good. And I know that if my mom had taken five more minutes, I might not be here writing this. Those cheesy Stranger Danger videos they used to show in school. Yeah, they might have saved my life. People sometimes call me paranoid now that I've got a daughter of my own. But I don't care.
Starting point is 00:12:58 I know what's out there. The woods, the strangers, the tapping on windows in the night. They're real. And sometimes, they're closer than you think. The end.
