Starting point is 00:00:00 Horror. A long, creepy night at the gas station. So, let me set the scene before diving into the real weirdness. My name doesn't really matter for this story, but just for context, I'm a 19-year-old dude living in Ontario. It's not a tiny town, not Toronto-level huge either, somewhere in the middle. Big enough that you see new faces every day, small enough that you still run into people you know at the grocery store, that kind of place. Anyway, On this particular night, it was about 11 o'clock. I just finished a workout at the gym. The kind of workout where you feel good and tired, sweat drying up on your shirt,
Starting point is 00:00:40 your muscles screaming but in a good way. I had that slight adrenaline high, you know, the kind where you feel invincible for a little bit. I thought, cool, I'm done for the night. I'll grab some food for the next couple days and call it. So I swung by the grocery store. Just basic stuff, some eggs, bread, chicken. chicken, maybe a few snacks I didn't really need. But while I was checking out, I decided to get some cash back, $120 to be exact. I owed my mom money, and I figured I'd just pay her back tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Little did I know, that money was about to almost get snatched out of my life before I even made it home. Now here's where I admit something. I had just recently gotten my car. It was a stick shift, and since I was still new to driving manual, I was a little obsessed with it. Like the novelty hadn't worn off yet. Every excuse I had to drive, I took it, even pointless ones. So, instead of heading straight home like a normal person would at that hour, I thought, you know what, screw it, I'm going for a drive. So I did. I cruised around the city for about half an hour, just driving aimlessly, upside streets, down main roads, stopping at lights, shifting gears, practicing the timing. It felt good. But eventually I decided, all right,
Starting point is 00:02:00 Enough joyriding. Time to head home. Now here's where it starts getting a little dicey. On my way back, I passed a gas station near the edge of town. Still kind of close to my neighborhood, but in one of those industrial business zones, lots of warehouses, empty lots, not many houses, pretty dead at night. I looked down at my gas gauge and figured, yeah, I might as well fuel up, better now than tomorrow morning. So I pulled into the station.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Right away I noticed something. The place was empty. Like, I was the only car there. No other customers, no workers outside, nothing. Just fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, casting that harsh, pale glow across the lot. And next to the gas station, maybe 100, 200 meters away, there was this big, empty lot. No lights, no movement, just darkness. Except, I saw an SUV parked there. Now, an SUV just sitting in a random empty lot at night doesn't sound like much, but for some reason it's stuck in my head. My brain kind of filed it under, weird, but not important right now. So, I ignored it. I got out, slid my card into the pump, and started fueling up. That's when it
Starting point is 00:03:16 happened. Out of nowhere, this woman came around the corner of the station and started walking straight toward me. The second I laid eyes on her, my whole body reaction. before my brain could even process it. A chill shot down my spine so hard it was like an electric current. My instinct screamed at me. Without even thinking, I reached back and locked my car. She kept walking toward me, fast. Her hands were shoved deep into her pockets, and the way she was staring at me, man, it was intense. Like she wasn't looking at me, she was looking through me. And then she spoke. Her voice was rough, rast, like a smoker's voice. She said, I got in a fight with my boyfriend, and he left me here. Can you
Starting point is 00:04:03 give me a ride to my mom's house? Now, on paper, that doesn't sound too crazy, right? Someone stranded, asking for help. But the way she said it, it was off. She repeated the question almost word for word in that exact same raspy tone, like she was reading a script. I stammered something like, I have to pump gas first while keeping my eyes locked on her. She didn't back off. Instead, she walked around to the passenger side of my car and yanked at the door handle. Can you unlock your car door? I'm cold.
Starting point is 00:04:38 I've been out here for a while. My stomach dropped. Every red flag in existence was waving right in my face. I cut the pump early, walked inside the station, and went up to the guy behind the counter. I told him, hey, there's this guy. girl outside acting sketchy. I don't know her. She's bothering me. He just shrugged. Literally didn't care at all. You could tell he wasn't about to get involved. Great. Thanks for nothing, man. So I walked back out, figuring she was maybe high or something, and I'd just have to brush her off. But that's when the
Starting point is 00:05:12 situation turned from weird to holy crap, something's about to happen. Remember that SUV I mentioned earlier? Yeah, the second I stepped outside, I heard its engine roared a life. I looked over, and the driver repositioned himself, creeping closer toward the exit, like he was waiting. He didn't drive away, he just sat there, engine running, lights on, pointing in my direction. Meanwhile, the woman was still at my car. She looked at me and said again, can you open the door now? I'm really cold. Alarm bells were exploding in my head. She did. She did. She did. And she did. And I said, I said, I'm didn't look right. Her clothes were decent enough, but her face told another story. Makeup, caked on thick, trying to cover sores and rough skin. Her eyes were sunken, bloodshot, lifeless.
Starting point is 00:06:03 She didn't look scared. She didn't look like a desperate girl who'd been stranded by her boyfriend. She looked empty, robotic almost. And then it hit me. This wasn't about her needing a ride. This was a setup. I said as firmly as I could. could. No, that's not my problem. I need to go home. Her tone shifted. She stopped asking nicely and said, Come on, you're driving me home, right? I repeated, no, I can't, I'm leaving. I reached for my phone to call someone, only to realize, crap, I'd left it inside the car. She suddenly raised her voice, snapping, I'm cold, I've been out here for hours. Way too aggressive for someone asking a favor. And then I saw it. The quick glance she threw at the SUV. That was it. I knew exactly what was happening. She wasn't stranded. She was bait. I stood by the driver's side door and raised my voice back. That's not my problem. We went back and forth like that, not quite yelling, but escalating fast. My mind was racing. What if they tried to steal my car? What if they wanted the cash in my wallet? What if they had a weapon?
Starting point is 00:07:18 Something in me just snapped. I went full fight mode. I shouted at her, get the fuck back. You don't know who I am. Back off right now. She froze. I think I caught her off guard. She stepped back, then muttered, you better get out of here then. The way she said it, cold, flat, almost threatening, made my blood run cold. Fight mode instantly flipped into flight mode. I wasn't about to wait and see what happened next. I jumped in my car. slammed it into gear and peeled out of there as fast as I could. I cut into a random subdivision, zigzagged through side streets, constantly checking my mirrors to make sure I wasn't being followed. My heart was pounding so hard, it felt like it was shaking my chest. Once I felt safe enough, I called the cops, explain the situation, told them about the SUV, the woman, the whole deal. They said they'd send a car to check it out, but since no actual crime had technically been committed, there wasn't much they could do. Still, they confirmed what I already suspected. It was most likely a setup for a robbery. She distracts, you unlock the car, they roll up, and suddenly you're out of
Starting point is 00:08:30 your wallet, your car, or maybe even worse. When I finally pulled into my driveway, I just sat there in silence, my hands shaking on the steering wheel. The last thing she said kept replaying in my head. You better get out of here then, though. She dropped the helpless victim act in an instant. That's what still messes with me the most. The switch was too clean, too fast, like she'd done this before, like it was rehearsed. And that SUV, just sitting there, waiting, watching, I've been jumped before in my life, and I thought that was bad. But this, this was something different, predatory, cold, calculated. And honestly, I'm still haunted by it. To be continued.
