Starting point is 00:00:00 The mansion felt off. It was like the air had changed its texture, thicker, heavier, almost as if it were carrying a secret too horrible to speak. The place, usually echoing with faint sounds of ticking clocks and distant humming from ancient radiators, had gone dead silent. Not peaceful silence. The kind that makes your ears ring, makes your neck feel cold, and your gut clenched like it knows something you don't.
Starting point is 00:00:26 Damien's father, Gregory, had just returned from a week-lawful. long business trip. His usual sour mood hadn't improved. The flight had been delayed, the hotel food had sucked, and his secretary kept texting him questions that could have waited. So yeah, he wasn't thrilled. But that tension multiplied the moment he stepped inside the front door. He looked around. Everything looked normal at a glance, same grand chandelier, same marble floor, same velvet curtains drawn over the windows. But it felt wrong. That stillness? It didn't sit right. Like the house itself was holding its breath. Then came the voice.
Starting point is 00:01:10 Dad, you're back. Damien's voice echoed down the long hallway like a child's, sweet and sing-sanji. He appeared from the staircase, grinning wide like a kid on Christmas morning. He looked about 17, too old to be using. that tone, but there was something deeply off about the whole thing. Gregory narrowed his eyes. Didn't expect you to greet me. No school today, Damien's smile stretched further. It's Saturday. Plus, I figured you'd be tired and wanted to see a familiar face. The kid's eyes, violet. A weird royal purple that didn't belong in any human face, gleamed with something cold. Gregory didn't like it. I didn't bring you anything. thing, Gregory muttered, walking past him. Ah, no gift. That's a shame, Damien said, trailing behind,
Starting point is 00:02:03 voice still laced with that weird cheer. Not even a keychain. A little snow globe, maybe, Gregory stopped and turned. You're annoying, Damian feigned a flinch. Are you mad, dad? You look mad. Why the hell did I even have you? That got a reaction. Not the kind Gregory expected though. Damien smirked, slow and deliberate. It curled on his face like a shadow creeping over sunlight. You should go see your wife, Damien said casually. Gregory's brows furrowed. What the hell does that mean? Damian tilted his head like a puppy. Oh. Did I say something weird? Gregory stared for a second longer, then shook it off. Too tired for this shit. He stormed toward the master bedroom. Darling, he called, pushing the door open. She was there. His wife,
Starting point is 00:03:02 sitting on the edge of the bed like a doll that had just been placed there. Her skin was pale, her hands clutched tightly in her lap, knuckles white. Her eyes darted to the corners of the room like she expected something to leap out of the shadows. He frowned. What the hell is wrong with you? Her lips trembled. We made a mistake. We made a monster. Gregory blinked. What the hell are you talking about? From behind, Damien's voice floated in. Talking about me, he stood at the door, leaning casually against the frame, the innocence drained from his features like someone had peeled off a mask. He didn't even try to fake it
Starting point is 00:03:42 now. His grin was sharp, cold, and unblinking. What did I do now? Damien asked, mock hurt dripping from his tone. Gregory lost it. Rage boiled up and exploded into his fists. He lunged and punched Damien square in the jaw. Damien staggered, a trickle of blood slipping from his lip. He wiped it with his thumb, licked the blood, and laughed. That's two today. Not bad, you're sick, Gregory growled.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Damien's eyes flicked toward his mother. You should have thought of that before you made me. He turned away, hands in his pockets, whistling a little tune as he. vanished down the hallway. Gregory stood frozen, staring after him. He looked at his wife, who was now crying silently, shoulders shaking. She didn't even look up. No, Gregory muttered. He's just acting out. Teenagers are psychos, but something nodded him. Something clawed at the back of his mind and said, go to the kitchen. He did. The first thing that hit him was the smell. Blood has a smell
Starting point is 00:04:53 Sharp, metallic, wrong. The stench hit him in the face like a slap. Then he saw the trail. Dark red droplets dotting the white tile, leading toward the fridge. But what was lying on the floor near the counter made him stop breathing. It was the dog. Their golden retriever, Max Sweet, Dopey Max who slept at the foot of their bed every night. Max's body was limp, eyes open more.
Starting point is 00:05:21 wide, throat slashed clean open. Blood had pooled underneath him. Gregory gagged. Next to the body, scrawled in thick red letters made from blood, were the words, since you didn't bring me anything. I left you a present. Gregory stumbled back, almost slipping. His hands shook.
Starting point is 00:05:42 He didn't know whether to run or throw up. Every nerve screamed at him to flee, to grab the car keys and never look back. but his legs were frozen. Then, a voice. Soft, mocking. Did you like it? Gregory turned. Damien stood there, a steak knife dangling from his hand. The blade was still wet. Gregory's knees buckled. The last thing he saw was Damien's eyes. They weren't human anymore. And then, Blackness. Gregory woke up in the guest bedroom. His hands were Tide. Rope.
Starting point is 00:06:22 Tight. Burning against his wrists. He tried to scream, but something was stuffed in his mouth. A sock. Fabric. He couldn't yell. Damien was sitting in a rocking chair in the corner. Rocking.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Slowly. Watching. A camera was set up on a tripod. You're awake, Damien said, like he was greeting a buddy at a sleepover. Cool, Gregory thrashed. Damien Sked. No, no, no. Don't do that.
Starting point is 00:06:58 I want to talk. He walked over, crouched beside him. Ever wonder what it's like to be me? Damien whispered. To be the disappointment. The weird one. The thing you both pretend is normal, Gregory shook his head violently. Damien stood.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Of course not. You don't think. That's your problem. He looked thoughtful for a moment. You know, I read once that people like me don't feel empathy. I think that's bullshit. I feel tons of things. Joy. Anger. Power. He leaned closer. Especially power. He pulled the sock out of Gregory's mouth. Why? Gregory croaked. Damien tilted his head. Why not? He walked to the camp. and hit record. This is a documentary, Damien said cheerfully. A coming-of-age story. A family drama. A horror film. Depending on how you look at it, Gregory began to cry. It was the first
Starting point is 00:08:06 time he had cried since he was a child. Something inside him broke. Damien smiled. The next few days were a blur. Or maybe it was one day. Time lost meaning. Gregory was kept tied up most of the time. Sometimes Damien would feed him, sometimes he wouldn't. Sometimes he talked. Sometimes he just stared. His mother was nowhere to be seen. On the third day, or maybe the fifth, Gregory woke up alone.
Starting point is 00:08:39 The ropes were gone. The room was silent. He stood up, legs weak, and stumbled into the hallway. Blood. Smears. trails, all leading to the basement. He followed them. The basement door was ajar. He pushed it open. Damien was sitting on the steps, back turned. A pile of burned photographs lay at his feet. She's gone, Damien said. Gregory didn't speak. Left a note. Said she couldn't stay, Damien looked
Starting point is 00:09:15 back. His eyes were wet, but not with tears. With sweat, maybe. Or madness. I was always too much for her. Gregory swallowed. You need help. Damien smiled softly. That's what she said. He stood, reached into his pocket, and pulled out the knife. You're the last one, Gregory ran. He didn't make it far. The house was quiet again. Peaceful, almost. Damien sat in the living room, sipping juice, the TV playing an old cartoon. The couch was stained. The walls were scratched. But he didn't mind. He was finally alone. And that's what he always wanted. The end.
