Starting point is 00:01:03 The Case of Robert, a dark story from Jabinka. If you want to understand today's case, we first need to take a little trip, mentally, of course, to a small city tucked away in Finland. The city is called Jabinka. Now, don't worry if you've never heard of it before, because, honestly, almost nobody outside of Finland really has. It's not one of those flashy places
Starting point is 00:01:28 that makes it onto post-college. or travel guides. Instead, Jabinka is the kind of city that quietly exists, where the days roll by slowly, and life feels predictable in a comfortable way. Back in the 1990s, Jabinca had around 47,000 residents. Not a big city, not a tiny village either, something in between. Imagine a place with just enough stores to get what you need, but small enough that running into the same faces over and over again was basically guaranteed, that's Jabinca in a nutshell. What makes Jabinca interesting, at least for this case, isn't just its size, but its reputation. The city was famously safe. The crime rate was laughably
Starting point is 00:02:15 low, almost non-existent compared to bigger Finnish cities. No major gangs, no violent crimes worth splashing across the headlines. In fact, people used to say in the 1990s that Jabinca was one of the best places to raise a family. The atmosphere was calm, the community was tight-knit, and it felt like the kind of place where the worst thing that might happen in a week was someone's bike being stolen. But as peaceful as it was, the story I'm about to tell you would shatter that image forever. The Discovery Everything stayed quiet right up until November 24, 1998. On that chilly morning, a few local workers were doing their normal shifts at the city dump, also known as the landfill. For them,
Starting point is 00:03:04 it was just another day surrounded by piles of discarded junk, the kind of place where people toss things they never want to see again. But buried among the heaps of trash, they stumbled upon something that nobody in their right mind would ever expect. A human leg. Yeah, a leg. Not a doll's leg, not a mannequin, not some Halloween prank, an actual severed leg. Naturally, the workers freaked out and immediately called the police. Soon, the landfill was swarming with officers, detectives, and tape cordoning off the area. What should have been just a routine workday turned into the beginning of one of the most disturbing investigations Jabinka had ever seen. From that moment, the landfill was treated like a full of
Starting point is 00:03:54 on crime scene. Every piece of garbage was examined. Plastic bags were opened, cans were inspected, papers were checked. For four weeks straight, the landfill became ground zero for one of the largest police operations in the city's history. And let me tell you, it wasn't just local police handling this. The discovery was such a big deal that they brought in firefighters, forensic teams, even the military. Yep, you heard that right. Soldiers were guarding piles of garbage 24-7. Imagine being a soldier, and instead of some high-stakes mission, your duty is babysitting a dump, because somewhere inside it could be the key to solving a murder. At that point, investigators launched two main lines of inquiry. Two paths of investigation. The first path was the logistics. How did that leg get there?
Starting point is 00:04:50 The landfill itself wasn't the actual crime scene. The leg hadn't just magically appeared on top of the garbage one day. More likely, it had been dumped there during a regular trash collection route, which meant the possibilities multiplied instantly. Jabinka's landfill didn't just serve Jabenka. It also processed trash from nearby towns, so the victim could have been from somewhere completely different, maybe even killed miles away.
Starting point is 00:05:18 That widened the search area to a ridiculous degree. The second path was the forensic angle. Who did the leg belong to? Test started right away. At first, results were pretty vague. Forensic experts determined the victim was male. That was all. Age could be anywhere between 20 and 60,
Starting point is 00:05:40 which, let's be honest, is basically useless. Half the men in Finland could fit that description. But then something happened that she, shifted everything. More body parts. While the landfill was still being searched, officers found another gruesome piece of the puzzle, part of a torso.
Starting point is 00:06:00 That was huge. With two different body parts to compare, they ran DNA test. Hi, I'm Darren Marler. Host of the Weird Darkness podcast. Starting point is 00:07:09 The investigation tightened. Slowly, a clearer picture started forming. The victim was a young man, probably between 20 and 30 years old. Forensic testing also revealed something chilling. At the time of death, he had been intoxicated. In fact, based on the condition of his body, it seemed like he'd been a heavy drinker for a long time,
Starting point is 00:07:33 possibly an alcoholic. This wasn't just some random healthy guy. He was someone struggling, most likely living on the margins, maybe surviving on state assistance. Someone who wouldn't have been surrounded by friends, or family, someone who might have slipped through the cracks of society. And indeed, when police checked records, they discovered a possible lead. Meet Robert.
Starting point is 00:07:59 There was a 23-year-old man who had recently stopped collecting his welfare benefits. The police immediately flagged him as a match. To this day, we don't actually know his real name. Officials have kept it under wraps. But for the sake of this story, let's call him Robert. Robert was a troubled soul. He didn't keep in touch with his family, and nobody knows why. Maybe it was estrangement, maybe he simply didn't have close relatives, or maybe he pushed them away because of his issues. What we do know is that Robert lived about 20 kilometers from the landfill, and his life wasn't exactly stable.
Starting point is 00:08:38 He wasn't social, he didn't go out much, and when he did, it was usually with a small circle of friends who weren't exactly the best influence. Robert drank heavily, used drugs, and hung out with a crew that had a reputation in Jabinka for vandalism, theft, and street fights. They were the kind of group people whispered about but didn't confront directly. Their style gave them away instantly. Dark clothes, long hair, band t-shirts from heavy metal groups. They wanted to stand out, and they did. Among this group, there was one guy in particular who drew the most attention. a man who openly identified as a Satanist.
Starting point is 00:09:20 When police learned about Robert's social circle, they knew they were on to something big. Enter Jarno. The so-called leader of Robert's friend group was Jarno Sebastian Elk, born in 1975. Now, Jarno's early life is murky. We don't have detailed records, but online forums and whispers from people who claim to know him
Starting point is 00:09:43 suggest his family had a history of serious mental health problems, things like schizophrenia and depression. As a child, Jarno was in and out of psychiatric facilities. He struggled with depression, attempted suicide, and as he got older, his behavior escalated into petty crimes, vandalism, theft, violence. But here's where things take a darker turn. Jarno was heavily influenced by the second wave of black metal that swept through Norway and Sweden during the 1990s. If you're not familiar with that scene, let me break it down for you. Black metal wasn't just a music genre. It became notorious for extreme behavior, including church burnings, grave desecrations, and in some cases outright murders.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Between 1992 and 1998, the scene was linked to the destruction of over 52 churches, and the desecration of about 15,000 graves across Scandinavia. For impressionable young men like Jarno, this was intoxicating. He wanted to be part of it. In 1993, he even tried to burn down a small church by himself. But the attempt failed miserably, and police caught him almost immediately. Because he was still young, he was sent to a juvenile detention center, where he spent two years. But instead of rehabilitating, Jarno came out more bitter, more obsessed, and even more self-destructive. He buried himself in alcohol, drugs, and, most dangerously, Satanism. Now, to be clear, the brand of Satan...

As Mjarno followed, wasn't about worshipping some horned devil. It was inspired by Anton LeVe's philosophy, basically atheistic Satanism. The core idea wasn't that Satan was a god, but that the individual should treat themselves as their own God. It was a philosophy that glorified ego, indulgence, and rejecting traditional morality.
Starting point is 00:12:47 For Jarno, already unstable and steeped in violence, this was the perfect recipe for disaster. To be continued.
