Starting point is 00:00:00 Horror. The Case of Jarno. From debate to darkness. So, picture this. It's late November of 1998 in Finland. The air is freezing, the kind of cold that bites through your jacket and makes your breath swirl like smoke in the night. A group of five young people are wandering the streets after a long night of drinking, doing drugs, and blasting heavy metal. They're buzzing, restless, edgy. this group at the very center is Jarno Sebastian Elk, 23 years old, self-proclaimed leader, and a man whose dark philosophies and broken mind have already crossed more than one dangerous line. Surrounding him are his girlfriend, Terry Johanna Terweshanka, just 17, plus Mika, 20, Lucas, 16, and Robert, 23. And it's Robert's fate that night that turns this story into one of the most infamous true
Starting point is 00:01:00 crime cases Finland has ever seen. A church, a debate, and a bruised ego. The group is walking through the city, a little high, a little drunk, and a lot chaotic. On the way back toward Jarno's apartment, they passed by a Christian church. And outside, standing near the entrance, is another group of young people. Now, for most of us, that's just background scenery. You nod, maybe avoid eye contact and keep moving. But not Jarno. That was a little. his style. He thrived on confrontation, on proving himself smarter, stronger, more dominant. So he stops, plants his feet, and starts preaching, not the Bible, but the Satanic Bible. According to witnesses later, he launched into this fiery debate, trying to dismantle Christianity
Starting point is 00:01:51 right there on the church steps. He mocked religion, called it a scam, throughout edgy one-liners about false gods and lies. He wanted to prove to these strangers, to his friends, and maybe to himself, that he was more intelligent, more enlightened. The debate goes on for a while. Voices get raised, arguments are tossed back and forth, and eventually, like most late-night debates fueled by booze, it burns itself out. Both groups drift off in opposite directions.
Starting point is 00:02:23 But here's the key part. the mood of Jarno's group has already shifted. The alcohol, the drugs, the tension of arguing about gods and demons, it leaves everyone buzzing, restless, a little on edge. And that's when the real nightmare begins. Back to Jarno's apartment. After leaving the church, the five friends head to the train station, ride back to Jibalinka, and from there walks straight to Jarno's apartment.
Starting point is 00:02:52 The plan is simple. more drinking, more music, more drugs. But this time, the energy in the room feels different. There's tension, crackling in the air like static. And the target of Jarno's irritation? Robert. Now, Robert wasn't exactly quiet. He had his own ideas, his own opinions, and that night he wasn't shy about voicing them. Every time Jarno tried to dominate the conversation, Robert chimed in. Every time Jarno postured as the all-knowing leader, Robert interrupted, challenged, poked at him. For someone else, maybe it would have just been a drunken annoyance. For Jarno, though, it was a direct threat to his authority. And authority, in his little world, meant everything. The breaking point came
Starting point is 00:03:42 when Jarno put on some heavy metal music he liked. Robert scoffed, said the band with trash, told him to change it. That was enough. Jarno snapped. He punched Robert in the face, sending him sprawling to the floor. And just like that, the room descended into chaos. The torture begins. Once the first punch wanded, it was like a switch flipped. Suddenly, this wasn't a party anymore. It was a nightmare.
Starting point is 00:04:12 Jarno barked orders, and the others obeyed. Maybe it was fear, maybe it was loyalty, maybe it was the haze of drugs clouding their judgment. whatever the reason, they fell in line. Music was cranked up loud to drown out the screams. Robert was dragged across the floor with the dog's leash around his neck, beaten again and again. He was humiliated, urinated on, cut with sharp objects, stabbed.
Starting point is 00:04:41 At one point he tried to escape. Somehow, even in that haze of terror and pain, he found the strength to make a run for it. But the group caught him, pulled him. back inside. And then came one of the most senseless, cruel decisions of the night. To, to shut him up and keep him from running, they tied his hands and feet with duct tape. Then, in what can only be described as madness, they wrapped his entire face in tape too, his mouth, his nose, his eyes, even his ears. At first, they probably thought it was just silencing him. But the reality was

Starting point is 00:06:19 dot com. Within minutes, Robert couldn't breathe. The tape suffocated him. And just like that, his life ended. Not with some ritual, not with some dramatic final speech, just slowly, desperately choking to death, while the people he thought were his friends stood over him. Flight and denial. Not everyone stayed. Mika and Lucas somewhere in the middle of this horror snapped out of it. They realized this wasn't just some twisted game anymore. It was real. It was murder. Terrified, they fled the apartment and didn't come back. But Jarno and Terry, they didn't stop. They didn't come to their senses. Instead, they doubled down. After Robert was already dead, they mutilated his body. They stabbed him with scissors. They cut him. They tortured a corpse.
Starting point is 00:07:15 And then, in one of the most disturbing details of the entire case, they committed acts of cannibalism. They cut pieces from his body, desecrated him in unimaginable ways. They severed his head, removed his eyes, played with it like some grotesque toy, tossing it around the apartment as if it were nothing more than a ball. By the next day, they methodically dismembered Robert's body, slicing it into pieces small enough to scatter across various dumpsters around the city. Their logic was simple. The trash trucks would come, the evidence would vanish, and with it, their crime. Problem solved, or so they thought. The news cycle and the false calm. For a few days,
Starting point is 00:08:02 Jarno and Terry lived in a strange kind of limbo. They sat glued to the news, compulsively checking to see if Robert's disappearance was being reported. And at first, First, nothing. No headlines, no missing persons alerts. Silence. They actually believed they had gotten away with it. That all it took to erase a human life was duct tape, knives, and garbage bags. Problem solved. Or so they thought. But fate doesn't work like that. On November 24th, workers at the local dump found a severed leg in the trash. And in that instant, Jarno and Terry knew. It was over. The sentencing.
Starting point is 00:08:46 The investigation quickly zeroed in on Jarno and his circle. The apartment glowed with blood under Luminol. Witnesses, testimonies, and confessions filled in the blanks. Jarno Sebastian Elk, the self-styled leader, was sentenced to life in prison. In Finland, though, life usually translates to around 20 years. And true enough, he ended up serving 17 before being released on parole in 2016. Terry, despite her deep involvement, received only six months. Mika, who fled midway, got two years and eight months. Lucas, being just 16 and considered easily manipulated,
Starting point is 00:09:27 had his charges dropped altogether. The court ruled that Jarno had coerced him, and he walked away legally free. The case sent shockwaves through Finland. The media didn't hold back. Headlines screamed about Satanism, about heavy metal music, about ritual sacrifices. Reporters painted it as some dark cult murder, fueling a wave of panic about youth subcultures. But the reality was messier. This wasn't really about Satanism. It wasn't about music. It was about broken people, heavy substance abuse, untreated mental illness,
Starting point is 00:10:05 and a charismatic but deeply unstable man dragging up. others into his spiral. Jarno wasn't a profit. He wasn't a mastermind. He was a broken man who found validation in destruction. And Robert, tragically, was the one who paid the price. Epilogue. So here's the... Hi, I'm Darren Marler. Host of the Weird Darkness podcast. Can people like Jarno ever truly be rehabilitated? He served his time, walked free, and lives among society again. Terry, too, though her second crime suggests, old patterns died hard. Do you believe prison can change someone like that? Or are some people simply too far gone? That's the haunting part of cases like this. It's not just about what happened in
