Starting point is 00:01:07 It's one of those memories that clings to you, like wet clothes that just won't dry, no matter how long you hang them up. Some moments stick in your head not because you want them to, but because they burn themselves in so deep they become part of you. It started with Ed. Poor guy looked like he'd run a marathon and then taken a dip in the lake fully clothed. His chest was heaving. his hair was slicked flat across his forehead, one strand plastered right over his eye.
Starting point is 00:01:35 He was gasping so hard that the words barely made it out. We're, we're missing a camper, he weased. Can't find him in the water. His friends don't know where he is. Before I even had time to react, Logan, the head lifeguard, the guy who acted like he was carved out of granite, jammed his whistle into his mouth and blew. The sound split the air like lightning, shrill and sharp, slicing through the buzz of the camp. It startled everybody. Kids shrieked, counselors froze mid-step, and the chatter around the lake died instantly. Everybody out of the water. Now, Logan's voice boomed across the shore, no hesitation. All lifeguards report to the dock immediately.
Starting point is 00:02:25 My stomach flipped. His tone wasn't just serious, it was commanding, the kind that made adrenaline hit you before your brain even processed the words. I didn't think. I just moved. Feet pounding against the dock, lungs filling with air, I dove first. Cold swallowed me whole. Behind me, splashes echoed, other lifeguards diving in, each in their assigned zone. zone. My job was the deeper section of the designated swimming area, the part most campers
Starting point is 00:03:01 weren't even allowed near without strict supervision. The depth only went to about 14 feet, but it felt endless when you were down there. The water was murky, visibility shot after just a few feet. I kicked downward, scanning the gloom. The deeper I went, the darker it became, until the bottom was nothing but a cold, black haze. My calves brushed against long strands of lake weeds that wrapped around me like ghostly fingers. My heart hammered harder. I reached the bottom, swept my arms left and right, fingers cutting through the silt and muck. Nothing.
Starting point is 00:03:41 I pushed up, lungs on fire, broke the surface with a gasp. Logan was already barking. Go again. No break. No hesitation. We sucked in air and went down once more. Second dive. This time, I aimed for the cluster of weeds by the far buoy line. My arms sliced through, parting the green strands. And then, something soft brushed against my cheek.
Starting point is 00:04:16 A hand. I jerked back. The water seemed to freeze around me. A pale, almost bluish-white hand floated there, fingers loose, drifting. Then I saw the face. A girl. Long hair swirled around her head like a halo, the strand spreading out as if she were caught in static electricity. Her eyes were open, staring right at me, but unfocused, like she wasn't really seeing me. I gasped. Wrong move. Lake water rushed into my mouth, stinging my throat.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Panic flared, but instinct kicked in. I grabbed her under the arms and started kicking for the surface. She was heavy, far heavier than she should have been. Her skin felt swollen, almost rubbery. My chest ached from holding in what little air I had left. Halfway up, I felt. Her leg snagged. Something below caught her, weed, rope, I couldn't tell, but it yanked her back. My grip slipped. She sank again. Slowly. Gracefully. But her eyes locked on mine, wide and unblinking, even as the darkness took her. My lungs screamed. I couldn't follow her. I broke the surface instead, hacking.
Starting point is 00:05:46 water out of my lungs. I found her. I shouted, voice breaking. She's down there. Come quick. I dove again before anyone could respond, sweeping my arms through the weed. Collini, did you know if your age between 25 and 65?

Starting point is 00:07:15 Minutes blurred. Then. Logan's whistle shrieked again. We all resurfaced, gasping. Logan stood on the dock, arms crossed, his shadow long in the setting sun. Listen up. The missing camper has been located, he said flatly. Kid was in the restroom the whole time.
Starting point is 00:07:40 Ed and Ted let him slip past. They'll be scrubbing the dock tonight. Relief washed over some of the guards, but not me. My stomach twisted. Then Logan's gaze pinned me. Everyone's dismissed. Except you, Mike. I want a word.
Starting point is 00:08:03 The others trudged off, casting me sideways looks. Logan waited until we were alone, then lowered his voice. What the hell was that? He snapped. You nearly drowned yourself. You nearly caused chaos. If you pull something like that again, you're gone. But there was someone down there.
Starting point is 00:08:27 I protested. I grabbed her. I saw her face. He glared. I don't believe in ghosts, Mike. We scoured that water. There was no one. I opened my mouth in.
Starting point is 00:08:45 again, but he cut me off. You're off waterfront duty. Get out of my sight. And that was it. Word spread through camp like wildfire. Kids whispered, counselors gave me side eye, even the other lifeguards avoided me. Nobody believed me. To them, I'd been the reckless idiot who scared everyone for nothing.
Starting point is 00:09:12 By the next week, I quit. I told myself I'd forget it, shove it in a mental drawer, lock it up, and move on. But the thing is, you can't really bury a memory like that. It creeps back in. Sometimes in dreams. Sometimes when you're near water. Sometimes in the quiet, when you least expect it. That was the summer of 1994.
Starting point is 00:09:41 Two decades later, 2014, I came across a headlock. while scrolling through news articles. My blood ran cold. Human remains found at Camp Valleyway. The report explained that the lake had been drained due to local land disputes and environmental concerns. What they found on the bottom shocked everyone, bones. A lot of them.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Anchored with rope, scattered across the deepest section of the lake. 19 victims. kids between 10 and 13 years old. I stared at the screen, heart-pounding like it had all those years ago. I remembered the hand. The face. The way she sank back into the dark. The investigation revealed something darker than any ghost story.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Turns out, ten years before the discovery, an orphanage called Clarkstown had been shut down for embezzling funds. Every summer, the or... The orphanage kids were brought to the camp, supposedly to meet families who'd adopt them. On paper, it looked great. Heartwarming, even. But the adoptions were fake. The kids were never placed in homes. They were murdered, dumped into the lake,
Starting point is 00:11:04 tied down with anchors so no one would ever find them. At least, that was the plan. One rope corroded over the years. One body drifted into the swimming zone, the one I saw. The state charged several people connected to the orphanage and the camp. Some went to prison. Others slipped through the cracks. And still, so many questions went unanswered. What haunted me most was simple.
Starting point is 00:12:39 That night in 1994, I wasn't hallucinating. I wasn't panicking. I wasn't making it up. She had been there. There's always a reason to be afraid. The end.
