You know, I saw another post earlier about a bunch of students who died, and it got me thinking about my own city, the stuff that's gone down here over the years. It's crazy when I step back and think about how much darkness has hung over this place, despite how nice and upper class it looks from the outside. Tourists come here all the time, snapping photos and sipping overpriced coffee like this is some dreamy vacation spot. But if you've lived here long enough, if you've really paid attention, you'd know it's got a much darker underbelly.

Everyone here knows me, or at least used to. I've lived here long enough that people just end up telling me things. Like, random people in line at the gas station or sitting next to me at a bar would unload the wildest stories like they've been waiting for someone to listen. And honestly, some of the stuff I've heard, and some I've seen with my own eyes, sticks to me like smoke. I don't think it'll ever leave. So yeah, let me tell you.

tell you some of what I've picked up over the years. Let's start with the suicides because they kind of set the tone for everything else. Between middle school and high school, around 10 kids, 10, killed themselves. Let that sink in for a second. I still remember hearing about the first one, it didn't feel real. Then came the second. The third. At some point it stopped feeling like isolated tragedies and more like some kind of curse hanging over the youth in this town. Nobody talks about it anymore, not really, but if you went to school here during that time, you know. Then there was the kid who got stabbed, like really stabbed. Not just a quick altercation gone wrong. I'm talking multiple deep wounds, the kind that make you think whoever did it wasn't

trying to scare them, they were trying to erase them. Car accidents. Oh, plenty of those two, There were four or five bad ones I can remember off the top of my head. One wiped out an entire family. Another one left this girl barely alive. She lost her boyfriend and her closest friends all in the same crash. The car wrapped around a tree like a candy wrapper. She survived, but barely. Some people say it might have been better if she hadn't because after she left the hospital,

she was sent to live with her mom. and her mom, well, let's just say she's known around here for being horrifically abusive. No one sees that girl anymore. Her mom doesn't let her old friends visit. People whisper about what her life must be like now, but no one does anything. Shootings. Yeah, we've had our share. One in particular still makes my stomach turn. A teenage boy got shot at a house party. He wasn't even in the wrong place at the wrong time, he was trying to protect some girls from a guy who'd completely lost it. The shooter had been harassing a group of girls, getting more aggressive by the minute, and this kid stepped in to stop him. Paid for it with his life. There was even a video floating

around afterward, like some sick trophy. It was on everyone's phones for a while before it got taken down, but by then the damage was done. And of course, there have been overdoses. Too many to count. One guy went on a meth binge and completely snapped. If you've got the stomach for it, listen to this, he beheaded his girlfriend. Then he slashed her friend's throat like she was nothing. That one made the news for a little while, but around here it was just another entry in the long, messed up list. It doesn't stop there. A couple of homeless people have been found murdered over the years, most people didn't even notice or care.

Two girls were kidnapped a few years back. One of them came back broken. Physically, emotionally. What happened to her? Yeah, I'm not even going to spell it out because it's the kind of thing that makes you hate the world. There was a murder-suicide at one of the hotels downtown a couple years ago. And if you go back further, like the 90s, there was another brutal one in a hotel room. The details on that one are blurry, but it's the sort of story that's been passed.

passed around enough times to feel like urban legend. Every couple of years, human remains wash up on the beach. Skeletons. Partial bodies. I was actually there the last time it happened. The whole place turned into a crime scene. Caution tape flapping in the wind while kids whispered about serial killers. But they never really solved it, not officially, anyway. And here's the thing that messes me up the most, this isn't some bad neighborhood. This city's supposed to be fancy. The kind of place people come to relax, to escape. There are expensive houses with pools, luxury hotels, golf courses, all of it. But underneath all that shine, there's a rot. Always has been. Now let me tell you about some of the people I've personally crossed paths with.

I knew most of the folks in these stories. either directly or through friends. Some of them weren't even bad people, they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Others, they were monsters hiding in plain sight. Like this one guy. Rich, well-dressed, charming in that creepy way predators can be. He came to town a few years back and started dating, and I used that term loosely, girls as young as 13. 13. He'd throw parties, supply alcohol and drugs to teenage boys so no one would snitch on him. The whole thing felt like a bad movie. I tried going to the cops about him once, but they didn't do a damn thing. He was rich and connected, so of course he got away with it. Then one day he just disappeared,

packed up and left. No warning. Probably doing the same thing in another city now. Then there was this other dude. Total creep. He was like the town's resident punching bag but for good reason. Rapist, druggy, violent as hell. He became so hated that any time someone saw him on the street, they beat the living crap out of him. There are videos of him getting jumped, at least ten that I know of. One time someone shoved him in a porta potty and tipped it over.

Another time he tried to rob me and my friend when we were like 14. I swear to you, he pulls up in this junky car, yell. give me all your shit, and tries to jump out. We didn't even flinch. Just kicked his car door shut and kept walking like, nah, he didn't even try again. That guy's dad actually hired a bodyguard to protect him at parties because he couldn't go anywhere without getting jumped. Want to know how that turned out? The bodyguard took the money and bailed as soon as cops showed up at one party. Even the wealthy pedophile I mentioned earlier would beat the crap out of this dude when they hung out. Last I heard, he's in jail.

Haven't seen or heard his name in years. The city has no shortage of vile people, rapists, pedophiles, women beaters. But no one likes to talk about them openly. It's like everyone agrees to keep things quiet as long as the tourists keep coming and the money keeps flowing. sweep the dirt under the rug. Anyway, there's way more I could tell you. Stories stacked on stories like bricks in some crumbling wall. But I think this is enough for now.

This place, it looks perfect if you don't know any better. But if you live here long enough, you see it for what it really is. A pretty shell wrapped around a lot of pain, violence, and secrets people would rather forget. And me? I can't forget. I knew too many of these people, good and bad. I've seen too much to ever look at this city the same way again. The end.
