For years and years, people whispered about it, detectives had tried their best to crack it,
Starting point is 00:01:12 but nothing came out of it. The case had gathered dust in the archives, and many believed it was destined to remain unsolved forever. A cold file, a forgotten tragedy, a story without an ending. But life has a funny way of stirring up the past when you least expected. Fast forward 24 years. It was Christmas Day, 2021. Snow covered the small suburban town in the U.S. where Jenna Jurwatowski lived. Jenna was 23 years old, an ordinary young woman with an ordinary job at a little flower shop. She loved the smell of fresh roses
Starting point is 00:01:51 in the morning, the sound of the doorbell jingling as customers came in with their clumsy winter gloves and the quiet moments when she arranged bouquets while daydreaming about a bigger life outside the shop. That Christmas, something seemingly small happened that would soon flip her entire life upside down. One of her closest friends received a DNA kit as a gift. You know the type, those little boxes you see advertised online, where you spit in a tube or swab your cheek, send it off, and weeks later you get an email with flashy results telling you where your ancestors came from. 50% Irish. 30% Italian. Maybe even a sprinkle of Viking warrior in there. But those tests don't just reveal ancestry. They also sometimes highlight health risks, possible genetic conditions,
Starting point is 00:02:43 and if you dig deeper, they can connect you with family you didn't even know existed. Jenna's friend was excited. She did her test right away, mailed it off, and a couple of weeks later she ran straight to Jenna's place with the results. The two of them huddled on the couch, scrolling through the app like it was gossip from a reality show. Look at this, her friend laughed. Apparently, I've got some distant cousin in Canada who's obsessed with fishing. And look, this thing even predicts I might have a risk for lacto-exam. intolerance. I mean, that explains a lot.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Jenna chuckled but felt a strange pull. She had always carried this hollow space inside her when it came to family. There was an entire branch of her family tree she never really knew, stories that were whispered but never fully told. Maybe, she thought, if I try this test, I'll finally have some answers. So, without overthinking it, she ordered her own kit. When it arrived, she followed the instructions like a science experiment, spit in a little tube, swirl it around, seal it tight, send it off. Done. A few weeks later, the results came in.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Nothing dramatic. A mix of European ancestry, nothing shocking, a few distant relatives scattered across the country. She compared results with her friend, giggled about it, and then went back to her normal life. she didn't think much more of it that was until about a year later one cold afternoon while she was on her lunch break at the flower shop her phone rang the number was unfamiliar from michigan she almost ignored it but something told her to pick up Hello. Is this Jenna Jurwitowski, a man's voice asked. Uh, yeah, that's me. This is Detective Harris with the Michigan State Police. I know this may sound unusual, but we need to talk about your DNA profile.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Her heart skipped a beat. My DNA profile. Yes, ma'am. It appears we've found a partial match between your genetic information and evidence related to an old unsolved case. We believe there may be an indirect connection. Jenna froze, staring at the phone like it had turned into a snake. Her mind immediately jumped to the worst. Was she a suspect?
Starting point is 00:05:28 Were they accusing her of a murder? Was she about to get arrested for something she didn't even know about? wait what i don't understand am i in trouble not exactly the detective replied carefully this case is not recent it goes back decades we're reaching out because your DNA may help us trace family lines and identify individuals connected to the victim she didn't know whether to feel relieved or terrified The Garnet Baby Case
Starting point is 00:06:04 The detective explained that back into... This Christmas on Sky, you can turn a silent night into stoppage time delights An old mince pie Into a stunning try And a stupendous run Lundster And a winter chill

Visit drinkaware.a.e. 2017, the Michigan Police had reopened an old case known as the Garnet Baby case. The case involved the skeletal remains of a baby girl found years ago. For years, no one could figure out who she was, how she died, or who her family might have been. No missing person reports had ever matched. No DNA databases had connected the dots. In 2020, after running out of Leeds, the police had given the remains to a private lab specializing in forensic genealogy.
Starting point is 00:07:42 Using a fragment of femur bone, the scientists had painstakingly extracted DNA and built a massive genealogical map. It took them two years of comparisons, dead ends, and late-night research. But finally, in 2022, they had narrowed down the family line. And that family line led to Jenna. The Suspicious Call The Detective told her that one of their lead genetic researchers in Chicago would be contacting her soon. They needed to verify more details, upload her profile to a global genetic database, and expand the search. When Jenna got home that night, she sat down.
Starting point is 00:08:24 her mother, Kara, down at the kitchen table. The words tumbled out of her mouth as fast as she could speak. Kara listened quietly, frowning deeper with every detail. Mom, they want me to give them more information. I think they want my login, maybe even access to my profile. Kara shook her head sharply. Absolutely not. Don't hand over your password to strangers. Remember what happened to Grandpa? Just last month, someone called pretending Uncle Mike had died and tried to trick him into giving out his bank details. It was a scam. Jenna nodded nervously.
Starting point is 00:09:08 She remembered too well. It had been a cruel prank, and they had almost fallen for it. So when the researcher from Chicago called later that week, Jenna was already suspicious. Miss Gerwatowski, we'd like your permission to upload your genetic profile into our international database. This could help us track relatives connected to the Garnet case. Okay, I guess that's fine, Jenna said hesitantly. And if possible, could you provide your account login credentials so we can directly? Click.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Jenna hung up instantly. Her gut screamed scam. The shock at home. A week later, Jenna was back at the flower shop, trimming tulips and humming along to the radio when her phone rang again. This time it was her mother. Jenna, come home right now, Kara's voice cracked with urgency. What? Mom, I'm working.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Now. It's an emergency. Her boss overheard and, seeing the panic on Jenna's face, waved her off. Go. I'll cover for you. Don't worry. When Jenna arrived, her heart dropped. Her mom was sitting in the living room, tears streaming down her face.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Her cousin was there too, pale as a ghost, her hands trembling. What's going on? Jenna demanded. Her cousin looked her straight in the eye. Jenna, that phone call wasn't a scam. The police came by this morning. They're almost certain someone in our family is connected to the Garnet baby case. They need your DNA.
Starting point is 00:11:06 For real this time. Jenna felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. She sank onto the couch as her cousin continued. They already uploaded your profile. and guess what? It matched. The Garnet baby, she's a distant relative of ours. The room went silent. Kara whispered, almost to herself, if anyone in our family could have done something like this. I think I know who. To be continued.
