My daughter's imagination has always run a little wild, so when she rushed into the kitchen and told me there was a man waving at her through the window, my first instinct was to laugh.
Starting point is 00:01:12 I thought she was playing one of her little games again. But just to humor her, I followed her back into the living room. And then my heart damn near stopped. Right outside the window stood a man. He looked like he'd crawled out of a nightmare. His long, greasy hair hung in tangled clumps, and his black leather jacket was so worn and torn it looked like it had been through a war. His face was smudged with dirt, and he stared into our house without a single ounce of shame. He was looking straight at my son.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Hey, what are you doing? Get the hell out of my yard. I shouted. The man just smiled, a wide, crooked grin that dripped malice. Then he slowly raised his right hand, and in it, he held a huge kitchen knife. Bloody. That's when the panic hit me. I grabbed both my kids, trying to stay calm so they wouldn't freak out.
Starting point is 00:02:10 I told them we were playing a secret game of hide-and-seek and that they needed to hide in the wardrobe upstairs and stay completely quiet. My daughter seemed to catch on quickly and knew we were hiding from the man outside. I told her not to worry and that he was just a weird friend playing a prank. Then I crept back downstairs. I grabbed a baseball bat from the closet and held it like my life depended on it, which it probably did. I peeked back out the window. The man was gone. But he left behind a bloody handprint on the glass.
Starting point is 00:02:43 I called the police immediately, trying to keep my voice steady as I explained everything. They said an officer would be there as soon as possible. When the cop arrived, I showed him the handprint, and he went outside to look around. Meanwhile, I brought the kids out of hiding, sat them down with cartoons, and tried to keep things normal while I spoke to the officer. He told me there were bloody fingerprints on the back door handle too. The guy had tried to get in. The next few hours were a blur. Forensics came to take samples. I gave my statement. My husband rushed home from work. Later, the officer called and said they had arrested the guy.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Turns out, just two days after he was in our backyard, he tried the same thing at another family's home. According to the police, he'd been recently released from a mental health facility and had stopped taking his meds. The blood on the window. It was his own. I still don't know what he was planning. Maybe he just wanted to scare us.
Starting point is 00:03:49 Maybe he wanted something worse. But I credit a horror YouTube channel, Unit 522, for making me paranoid enough to lock that backyard door. That paranoia might have saved our lives. And while we're on the subject of terrifying things happening around Christmas, let me tell you about the time we nearly got murdered in the woods. A couple of years ago, my parents had the genius idea to spend Christmas out in the forest in some rental cabins.
Starting point is 00:04:17 You know, get away from the noise, reconnect with nature, all that wholesome stuff. I was 18, my little brother Tom was 11, and our big, lovable German Shepherd, Trigger, was with us. We packed up our stuff and hit the road around 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve. My dad's sister Billy and her family joined us too. We met up in a small village near the cabins, got our directions sorted, and finally reached our spot around 4 p.m. The place looked like a postcard, snow falling, cabins nestled between pine trees, all of them decorated with lights and wreaths. Each family got their own cabin, and there was a bigger communal one with games, a pool table, and even a hot tub. Tom and I were
Starting point is 00:05:03 hyped. We unpacked, lit the fire, played some board games, and planned to go hunting the next morning with Dad. Tom couldn't shoot yet, he was just tagging along to learn. My dad kept the hunting rifles under my bed, wrapped in a bag. Normally, they'd be in a locked case, but he figured there was no need since we were heading out early. Around 10 p.m., Tom and I headed to bed. Our room was at the far end of the cabin, with a beautiful view of a river just beyond the trees. Trigger curled up at the foot of Tom's bed, and we drifted off. At around 3 a.m., I woke up to Trigger growling. Not unusual, he's protective and growled. at everything. But the room was pitch black. No light under the door, which meant Dad wasn't up
Starting point is 00:05:53 watching TV. Then Trigger started barking. Tom woke up, asking what was going on. I told him Trigger probably heard a deer. We were in the woods, after all. Suddenly, the bedroom door flew open, and the lights came. There's so much rugby on Sports Exeter from Sky. Starting point is 00:07:09 4. slash cervical check. Come on. My dad stood there, pale as a ghost. Were you two laughing just now, he asked, looking between us. No, I said, confused. He crossed the room, pulled back the curtain, and stared out into the darkness. Then he dropped the curtain and said, go back to sleep. It was weird.
Starting point is 00:07:33 My dad never acted like that. I couldn't sleep. Every creek in the cabin made me jump. Around 4.30 a.m., I finally started to doze off, and then I heard crunching sounds outside the window. Like footsteps in snow. Then, tapping. Light, but steady. Fingertips on the glass. Trigger growled low in his throat, ears pointed at the window. Then the tapping got louder. I was frozen, sweat beating on my forehead. And then, you in there, little guy, a deep, voice whispered. Why don't you come out and play with me? I was furious, thinking it was one of my
Starting point is 00:08:16 dumb cousins playing a prank. I pulled the curtain back, ready to yell, but it wasn't one of my cousins. It was some creepy old man, maybe in his 60s, with tangled gray hair and ancient clothes. He was touching the window, breathing on it, whispering. I grabbed the rifle from under my bed, pulled the curtain all the way back, and shouted, get out of here or I'll shoot. The man smiled. A big, disgusting grin. Trigger barked like mad. My parents ran in. My mom screamed when she saw the man. My dad yelled that the cops were on their way. The man turned and calmly walked back into the woods. We found out later that he was homeless, living in the woods and struggling with serious mental illness. He'd been creeping around the cabins for a while. We spent the rest of Christmas
Starting point is 00:09:10 day at Aunt Billy's cabin and left the next morning. My dad told me later that he'd heard someone laughing outside his own window and left the rifle under my bed on purpose, just in case. I don't think I've ever been that scared in my life. And then there was the phone incident. This happened a while back, but I still remember every second. I was probably 13 or 14. I was probably 13. It was right after Christmas, and my parents had given me my own phone line. Not a cell phone, this was before all that. Just a regular bedroom phone. I was thrilled.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Gave my number to all my friends. I felt grown up. Then one day, around 3 p.m., I was napping when the phone rang. Annoyed, I picked up. Heavy breathing. No words. I hung up. rolled over. Phone rang again. Who is this? I asked. More breathing. I was annoyed now.
Starting point is 00:10:14 I told them to knock it off and hung up. The third call came. I snapped, this isn't funny. Stop calling me. This time, a voice answered. I can see you. You're very pretty. Why don't you come play in the snow with me? I ran to my parents. My dad checked all the doors and windows. Everything was locked. He said it was probably a sick prank and told me to unplug the phone. I went back to sleep. Next morning.
