Foot Solutions, the first step towards pain-free feet. I wasn't trying to find Andrew. Truth is, I was doing my best to avoid him. I figured we both needed space.
Starting point is 00:01:09 But the thing is, he found me anyway. And when I say he looked different, I mean it. He'd lost weight, a lot of it. He stood there in just jeans and a white t-shirt, looking like some fresh-faced college kid. If I hadn't known him, I would have guessed he was still stressing over finals, not billion-dollar mergers or social scandals. and between us. Andrew was never really my type. He was too polished, too sunny.
Starting point is 00:01:39 Like one of those perfect weather days that never happen when you need them most. My world has always been messier, colder, darker. He's all bright skies and calm waters, I'm more like a storm, unpredictable, maybe even dangerous. Still, there he was, standing in front of me like I hadn't shattered his life just weeks before. He reached into his pocket and pulled out two concert tickets. They were crinkled, like he'd been holding on to them a while. His hand trembled a little as he offered them to me, and I could see it in his eyes, hope, uncertainty, maybe even fear.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Jazz, he said, quietly. You once said you liked it. I stared at those tickets, at his face, and everything inside me twisted up. I wanted to keep my distance, to protect both of us. But the effort he made, the way he looked at me like I was still worth something, I cracked. Not a huge jazz fan, actually, I said, keeping my hands at my sides. He blinked, clearly stunned. The light in his eyes dimmed just a little.
Starting point is 00:02:48 But, I added, stepping forward and taking his hand, if you're okay with it, I'd rather go see a movie. And just like that, we started dating, properly this time. Not the games, not the strategy. Just him and me, trying to figure it out. I even gave him my notebook. Not the kind with hearts and doodles, but one packed with real notes, pages of observations I'd made about him over the months. His favorite wines, his obsession with golf rules, the history of jazz, which I actually
Starting point is 00:03:20 studied even though I didn't like it, all of it. He flipped through it, page after page, and I watched his eyes widen. Shock, disbelief, maybe even a little awe. You did all this for me, he asked. I just shrugged. Honesty's my thing now. I wanted him to know the real me. Not the manipulative version, not the polished persona.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Just me, a girl who never left the city, who never vacationed in Europe or partied on yachts. I hate wine, jazz puts me to sleep, and I'm not a sweetheart. I'm sharp, calculates. I chase what I want. That's the truth. For the first time, I wanted someone to love me not for who I pretended to be but for who I really was. And Andrew, he surprised me. He was soft, careful, gentle in a way that made me feel like I could finally exhale. We made plans that evening. I had a wine-tasting event earlier at the Empire Hotel, part of the job, but we agreed to meet later for the concert. Then maybe hit up one of those grimy street vendors that sold the best
Starting point is 00:04:32 barbecue in the city. Let's skip the fancy cars tonight, I said on the phone. I brought this amazing bottle of wine. We can share it after. He laughed. Bordeaux with street meat. Bold choice. Fusion cuisine, I joked. The wine event itself was a total drag. Rich folks pretending to understand Tannis. and finish. I was getting ready to bounce when Hannah, CFO over at Kalmara, came up to me with a glass and that fake cheerful smile. You've got to try the desserts, she said, nudging me toward the buffet. Surprisingly, the desserts were the best part of the evening. I said my goodbyes, slipped out with a box of wine I didn't care about, and started walking. My driver had already been sent home since the Crest Group building was just a 10-minute walk away. I don't know. I'd
Starting point is 00:05:27 only walked a few blocks when I started to feel wrong. Dizzy. Everything blurred. At first, I blamed the champagne, but this was different. I could barely see the pavement in front of me. My fingers went numb. I reached for my phone, fumbling through my bag like a drunk, but I couldn't focus enough to dial. My legs gave out, and I leaned against a tree, gasping. Something was seriously wrong. Two guys in business casual walked by. They stopped, turned, and one of... Starting point is 00:07:12 They both grabbed me, each taking an arm. Told you not to drink so much, remember. Always ends in tears. My brain screamed that something was off. I didn't know these guys. I spotted a middle-aged man walking, passed and reached out, whispering, call the police. I don't know them. He looked confused. She's my girlfriend, one of the guys said smoothly. Bad night. The man nodded, like that explained
Starting point is 00:07:44 everything, and walked on. I was invisible. All around me, people bustled, busy with their own lives. The van they were dragging me toward was just a few steps away. My heart dropped. If I got in, that was it. That's when I saw him. A tall guy, broad shoulders, standing by the road, phone in hand. I didn't think. I just acted. I yanked myself from the two men and threw myself at him, grabbing his shirt with what little strength I had left. The kidnappers followed immediately. Sorry about this, she's my girl. Just a little too much to drink. I didn't waste time trying to explain. I grabbed the guy's phone and hurled it to the ground, smashing it. He looked at me, stunned.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Then he turned to the two men and growled, Your girl, huh? Then pay for my phone. That's when everything snapped. He grabbed one of the guys by the collar, and before I knew it, a scuffle broke out. The guy wasn't just a bystander, he was ex-military or a bouncer or something. He had skills. Within seconds, one of the creeps was on the ground groaning, and the other took off running. Someone finally called the cops.
Starting point is 00:09:06 An ambulance arrived shortly after. I was taken in, checked out. The drug in my system wasn't champagne. Andrew came running. He looked pale and furious. He didn't say anything at first, just held my hand and sat beside me in the ER. I thought we were past all this, he was. finally whispered.
