Starting point is 00:01:00 If you've ever gone exploring in a place you probably shouldn't be, then you might relate to what happened to me and my friends that one weird day. There were these two abandoned trailers just sitting out in the middle of nowhere. Not even spooky in the beginning, just old, run down, and practically begging to be poked around in. They were barely 50 feet apart, so we were always kind of in view of each other, or so I thought. Me being the curious type, I drifted toward the back of the first trailer. I liked wandering through abandoned places and figuring out what stories they held. It's this strange hobby of mine, if something looks like it has no business still standing, that's where I want to be. But this time, man, I should have just stayed inside of my group.
Starting point is 00:01:45 When I got behind the trailer, the first thing that hit me was the garbage. A whole avalanche of trash had built up against the hillside and was practically oozing into the back of the trailer. But the back door was wide open, almost like it was waiting for me. Naturally, I stepped forward. That's what you do, right? As I got closer, I saw that the inside of the trailer was packed to the ceiling with more junk. Old pizza boxes, broken furniture, plastic bags, like someone had been hoarding for decades. Yet, somehow, there was a clear path through all of it, just wide enough for someone to walk around in.
Starting point is 00:02:24 I took one more step. I was about five feet away from the door when something stopped me. No noise. No movement. Just that gut feeling, that tight twist in your stomach that screams, get the hell out of here. So I did. I turned around and sprinted back to the front. When I got there, Sherry, the sister of our friend, was already back on the property.
Starting point is 00:02:51 I'd only been gone for five minutes, maybe less. And we hadn't heard her car, hadn't seen her coming. She just kind of, appeared. Now, picture what you think someone named Sherry who chooses to live in a junkyard in the middle of nowhere looks like. Got that image? Yeah, you're probably spot on. She immediately stomped over to the metal container where all the trash was and started tossing things out like some kind of raccoon queen defending her castle. How dare you touch my stuff?
Starting point is 00:03:23 There's treasure in here. Valuable treasure. We just stood there. Mouths open. Nobody knew what to say. Just as it was getting really weird, Linda showed up. That's her sister, the actual owner of the property. And that kicked off a full-blown sibling argument that had probably been building for years.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Sherry, this is M.Y. Land now. All this crap has to go. I told you I'd go through it when I had time. We both know you never will. At that point, we just bailed. Figured it was better to let them hash it out without us standing there like human spectators. So you're probably wondering why I'm sharing this like it's the start of some horror flick. Just a little family drama, right?
Starting point is 00:04:13 I wish. I really, really wish that was the end of the story. Three days later, an older man from our church group invited us out to dinner. It was his way of saying thanks for helping clean up his property recently. We met up with him and his brother Carl at this local huddle house, ordered some food, and just started talking. That's when Carl dropped the bomb. You know after y'all left, the police found people living in those trailers. Squatters.
Starting point is 00:04:43 A whole group of them. Been staying there for weeks. I stopped chewing. My brain stalled. They had been in the trailers when we were there. That moment when I wandered behind the trailer, when I stopped right before going inside, that wasn't just trash in there. That walkway had been for them.
Starting point is 00:05:04 I would have walked right into them. Alone. No one knew I was back there. At the time, I barely had any martial arts training. Nowadays, I know how to throw a punch, disarm a guy. whatever. But back then, I wouldn't have stood a chance against one person, let alone a whole group. They could have done anything. Drag me into the woods, and no one would have even known. I think whatever guardian angel slapped that gut feeling into me. That instinct saved my life. And I'll say it
Starting point is 00:05:39 forever, always trust your gut. Even when it makes zero sense. But stories like this, They stay with you. They live in the back of your head and whisper reminders when you least expect it. They teach you not everything sketchy is just harmless weirdness. And if that wasn't enough, let me tell you about something that happened in India. This one didn't happen to me, but to someone I trust more than anything, my own mother. It's the kind of thing you remember every time your bedroom window creaks. There's so much rugby on sports extra from Sky.

Back when my mom was eleven, she lived in the very room I now sleep in.
Starting point is 00:07:17 The house is ancient. Seriously, it creaks just from you looking at it too hard. It's buried way out in the countryside, and the closest neighbor is miles away. One night, about 2 a.m., she woke up to this light scratching sound. Nothing too wild, just a quiet scrape against her window. She thought it might be tree branches in the wind. Only, there were no trees near that window. Not a single bush.
Starting point is 00:07:47 That side of the house is completely clear. She sat up in bed, heart racing. The scratching would stop for ten seconds, then start again. Same rhythm. Over and over. She walked to the window, scared but curious. With a deep breath, she yanked the blinds open. There was a man outside.
Starting point is 00:08:09 A tall man wearing a white hockey mask, like Jason from those old horror movies. And in his hand was a knife. That sound she'd been hearing. It was the knife, dragging slowly across the window screen. She didn't scream. She couldn't. She froze. The man stared at her, just stood there holding the blade.
Starting point is 00:08:34 Eventually, he turned and walked away into the darkness. They called the cops, but he called the cops, but he was. was long gone. And that's how trauma plants itself. Little seeds of fear that grow into lifelong nightmares. Speaking of nightmares, I've got one more for you. This one happened to me during the winter of 2020 in India. I was 19. Lockdowns had the whole world turned upside down. So a few friends and I decided to throw a tiny party to shake off the isolation blues. Anita, my best friend, offered her place. Her mom was lovely. Fed us, poured some wine, really cozy Christmas-wide vibes. We watched movies, laughed, and for a while, everything felt normal. But Anita, she was getting
Starting point is 00:09:24 too drunk. Like, way too drunk for one glass of wine. Turns out, every time she went to the bathroom, she was sneaking swigs of rum. Had a whole bottle stashed away. Guess she didn't want to share. At one point, she got a call from her boyfriend and took it on the balcony. She started yelling, dropping curse words like it was her job. Then she stumbled back inside, looking at me like I'd just spit in her drink. Pure hatred. You okay, Anita. She smiled.
Starting point is 00:09:59 Yeah, he can't come tomorrow. Whatever. We shrugged it off. But during the movie, I caught her staring at me again. Same angry glare. I chalked it up to the alcohol. Big mistake. After everyone left, she asked me to stay the night.
Starting point is 00:10:19 Said we were besties, and she didn't want to be alone. I agreed. We stayed up, chatting, doing the usual sleepover stuff. Eventually, we went to bed. I woke up to pain. Not like a cramp or a sore neck. I'm talking stabbing pain. literally. My chest burned, and I felt something wet. I touched the area and my fingers came away
Starting point is 00:10:46 bloody. I'd been stabbed. Before I could scream, Anita was on me with a knife. My boyfriend has a thing for you, she snarled. I hate you so much. She raised the blade again, but this time I caught her wrist with my hand, and the knife went straight through my palm. Adrenaline kicked in. I I shoved her as hard as I could, screamed like a banshee, and finally managed to pin her down. Her parents, hearing the commotion, banged on the door until her dad kicked it in. They found me drenched in blood, Anita wide-eyed and muttering nonsense. Turns out, Anita had schizophrenia. No one told us.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Not her friends, not her teachers. Mental illness is still taboo where I'm from, so people just hide it. her parents never thought to warn us she wasn't arrested but was sent... I know what you're feeling and I was there too. And I know you might think that there is nobody to talk to, but I promise that you're not alone. It was never your fault and you deserve support and healing in your own time.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Whenever you're ready to talk, Dublin Rape Crisis Centre will be ready to listen. Call the 24-hour National Helpline on 118. 80077-8888. ...to a psychiatric hospital. The knife had missed my heart by inches. I spent a week in the hospital and two months healing. The scars are still there, on my chest, my hand, and my mind.
Starting point is 00:13:26 And I haven't done another sleepover since. So yeah, horror doesn't always come in the form of ghosts or monsters. Sometimes, it's hidden in plain sight, behind junk piles. behind windows or behind a smile you thought you knew. To be continued.
