Man, Hillcrest Manor wasn't the kind of place you'd expect to find a dead body.
This neighborhood was all about polished hedges, champagne brunches, and houses so big they felt
like they belonged in a movie. But here I was, Detective Elizabeth Sinclair, standing in the
middle of the Montague mansion, staring at Isabella Montague's body sprawled across the grand
staircase like she'd fallen right out of some tragic Shakespearean play. She was wearing this gorgeous
crimson gown, silk or satin, I don't know fabrics, but it looked expensive as hell.
Her hair, still perfectly curled, tumbled across her pale shoulders.
The only thing that ruined the picture was the trail of blood dripping from her chest onto
the marble steps. Christ, my partner muttered behind me. That dress alone probably cost more than
my car. Focus, Mike, I said sharply, though I couldn't stop staring either. Hillcrest people didn't
just die like this. They went to private hospitals and passed away peacefully in $1,000
sheets. But Isabella? Someone had wanted her gone, and they'd wanted it to make a statement.
The first suspect, Victor Ramon was sitting in the corner of the ballroom when we found him.
Or more like, he was hiding. The guy looked like someone out of a Gothic novel, black turtleneck,
wild hair, pale face, and hands, well, stained red.
Detective Sinclair, one of the uniforms said nervously.
We found him lurking back here.
His hands are, I can see that, I cut in.
Victor looked up, his eyes glassy.
I didn't kill her, he whispered, voice cracking.
You have to believe me, start talking.
I crouched in front of him.
Why are your hands covered in her blood if you,
you didn't do it. He swallowed hard. I, I found her like that. I tried to help. She was still
warm. I checked for a pulse, but, but there wasn't one. And then I heard voices, people coming.
I panicked. I didn't want them to think I, you realize how bad this looks, right? I loved her,
he said fiercely. She was my muse. I raised an eyebrow. Your muse. I'm a
Playwright, he explained, as if that cleared anything up.
She inspired everything I wrote.
But it wasn't what you think.
She wasn't happy.
She was trapped here.
That family, which family members are you talking about?
I asked.
Victor hesitated.
His eyes flicked toward the grand staircase where Isabella's body still lay.
Anthony, he said finally.
Her stepbrother.
He's not what he seems. The crack starts showing, Anthony Worthington. Now there was a name everyone
in Hillcrest Manor seemed to know, and revere. He was the golden boy, chiseled jawline, Ivy League
degree, and a smile that probably melted half the housewives in town. When I met him later that
day, he didn't look like a man grieving for his step-sister. He greeted me with this perfectly
rehearsed sadness. Detective, I'm still in shock.
Isabella was, she was light itself.
Who could do such a thing?
That's what I'm trying to figure out, I said evenly.
Tell me about her relationships.
Did she have enemies?
Lovers, Anthony's lips twitched.
She had, admirers.
Isabella was very beautiful.
But enemies?
Never.
She was too kind for that.
Victor Ramon says otherwise.
He claims you a woman.
and Isabella didn't get along. Anthony laughed, and it sounded like glass-breaking.
Victor Ramon is a disturbed man. He's obsessed with her. He's been pestering her for months with
his ridiculous, plays, and declarations of love. You're saying he's dangerous. I'm saying,
Anthony leaned closer, he's not right in the head. You saw him. You saw what he did. I didn't
answer. Something in Anthony's eyes didn't sit right with me. They were too. They were too.
too sharp, too calculating.
Like he wasn't grieving at all, just assessing me.
Secrets under the surface.
As the days passed, I started peeling back the layers of Isabella's perfect little life.
And let me tell you, it was a mess underneath.
For starters, there was the Montague family fortune.
Huge amounts of money tied up in trusts and properties, all of which would go to Isabella
unless, well, unless she wasn't around anymore.
And then there was Anthony, Charming Anthony, whose own trust fund had mysteriously dried up after a series of bad investments.
Blackmail, secret affairs, even threats.
They all floated to the...

Surface as I interviewed Isabella's circle.
Half the people in Hillcrest had skeletons in their walk-in closets, but one thing became clear, Isabella had been trying to cut Anthony out of her life.
She'd even filed paperwork to revoke his power of attorney.
And Victor.
Poor, weird Victor.
He was guilty of loving Isabella too much, sure.
But murder?
No.
His alibi started checking out.
He'd been drugged at a bar earlier that night.
His drink spiked, and it explained why he'd been so dazed and unable to defend himself.
But that raised a terrifying question.
Who drugged him?
The unraveling.
It all came together in the weirdest way,
an old maid who'd been working at Montague Manor for decades let something slip about Anthony.
About how he'd been sneaking around late at night.
About how he'd stolen Isabella's spare keys.
About a stain on his shirt that didn't wash out the next day.
Piece by piece, Anthony's perfect image cracked.
He'd framed Victor so carefully, drugged him, dragged him to the mansion,
and pressed his hands into Isabella's wounds to plant the evidence.
He thought he'd be able to walk away clean, inheriting the Montague fortune once Isabella was gone.
But he hadn't counted on me.
The confrontation, I waited for Anthony in the Montague library.
It smelled like old leather and betrayal.
You know why I'm here, I said when he sauntered in, still wearing that damn smug smile.
Do I? he asked coolly, pouring himself a whiskey.
You're a good actor, I'll give you that.
But I know.
I know everything.
The spiked drink.
The planted evidence.
The blood on Victor's hands.
It was you, Anthony.
For the first time, his smile faltered.
You can't prove it, he snapped.
Actually, I can.
I tossed a folder onto the desk.
Security footage.
The bartender's testimony.
The maid's statement.
Shall I go on?
Anthony lunged for the door, but Mike was waiting there with cuffs.
Going somewhere.
Mike asked.
Anthony struggled, but it was over.
The aftermath.
Isabella's death turned out to be more than a simple murder.
It was a lesson about greed, power, and how even the shiniest families can rot from the inside out.
As they dragged Anthony away, he sneered at me.

Not by a long shot.
Yeah, yeah, I said.
Tell it to the judge.
I took one last look at the grand staircase
where Isabella's life had ended.
For all her wealth,
she'd been just as trapped as anyone else.
Hillcrest Manor would never be the same.
And honestly,
neither would I.
The end.
