All right, so let me see.
start this off by saying this story didn't exactly happen to me, but it happened to one of my
closest friends. And honestly, the way he told it to me still gives me chills to this day.
To make it easier, I'm just going to write this from his perspective, like I'm stepping into
his shoes, because that's how he originally told it. This all went down several years ago,
back when I was about 14. My family had planned this little weekend getaway for Christmas.
The idea was simple, visit my uncle in Maine, spend a few days up there, and just enjoy some
quiet winter vibes. My uncle's house was tiny though, like, barely enough space for him,
let alone a whole family, so we ended up staying in this small rental cabin nearby.
We drove up there on a Thursday night, planning to stay until Sunday.
The drive itself was uneventful, just your typical winter road trip with my parents bickering
about directions and me half asleep in the back seat. It was already Christmas Eve when we finally
got to the cabin. The cabin itself was, well, cozy, but not in a cute holiday movie, kind of way.
More like, if someone murdered me here, nobody would hear my screams, kind of way.
Picture a single-story ranch-style cabin, two tiny bedrooms, a little kitchen and dining-room
combo, one bathroom, and an outdoor balcony that looked like it had seen better days.
The walls had that dark wood paneling that makes everything feel smaller than it is.
We unpacked, ate some snacks, and crashed pretty fast that night because we were all exhausted from the drive.
The next day, Christmas Eve, was actually fun.
We spent the whole day at my uncle's place, cooking, hanging out by the fire pit outside, and prepping for Christmas dinner.
It was one of those long days where you're so busy you don't even notice how tired you are until you finally sit down.
By the time we got back to the cabin that night, we were completely wiped.
I took a shower, brushed my teeth, and felt ready to just faceplant into bed.
But the second I stepped out of the bathroom, this weird, heavy feeling hit me.
It was like the air changed.
My stomach twisted with this sudden dread.
You know that sensation when your instincts scream that something's wrong, but you can't explain why.
That.
For context, I've always believed in the paranormal.
Not in a Ghostbusters way, but I do think there are things out there we can't explain.
So I start walking through the cabin slowly, my ears straining for any little noise.
When I got to the dining room, I noticed the moonlight spilling in through the window,
giving everything this pale glow.
I let my eyes adjust, and that's when I froze.
In the far corner, there was a shadow that didn't belong.
At first, I thought it was just some trick of the light, but then I saw them, two glowing
red eyes, staring straight at me.
Not blinking.
Not moving.
Just, watching.
My heart should have leapt out of my chest.
I should have screamed, or ran, or done literally anything.
But for some reason, I didn't.
It was like my brain switched to autopilot.
I just calmly turned and walked to the bedroom like I hadn't seen a damn thing.
I still can't explain that reaction.
It was almost like my body knew panicking would make things worse.
I eventually drifted off to sleep, but at exactly 2.17 a.m., I shot awake.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
They were in the hallway.
I tried telling myself it was my dad or mom getting water, but the sound was too slow, too intentional.
My heart pounded as the footstep stopped right outside my bedroom door.
Then came the sound I was dreading, the door creaked open.
I yanked the covers over my head like a little kid, praying that whatever was there would
lose interest and leave.
But the mattress dipped at the end of my bed.
Something, sat down.
Then came this low, menacing growl that seemed to vibrate through my whole body.
I couldn't take it anymore.
I shot up, and for a split second, I saw it, a dark figure with those same burning red eyes, perched at the foot of my bed.
I screamed and bolted out of the room, crashing into my parents' door and yelling for them to wake up.
They calmed me down, of course. Did the whole, it was just a nightmare, routine.
We checked my room together, and naturally, nothing was there.
But I know what I saw.
That wasn't a dream.
We stayed in that cabin until Sunday and went home like nothing happened, but I've never been back.
And I never will.
Now, fast forward to a totally different Christmas, 2019.
I was 12 this time, and Christmas has always been my favorite holiday.

That year, my family went to celebrate at my cousin's house.
We ate, played games, opened some early gifts.
Classic cozy holiday vibes.
We decided to spend the night there instead of,
driving home late. Around 4 a.m., I woke up to weird noises downstairs, like shuffling and
soft thuds. Now, I know every horror movie ever tells you not to check the noise,
but of course, I did. I crept to the staircase, peered through the railings, and I swear.
I saw Santa. Not like the mall Santa. A full red suit, white fur trim, big black boots.
He was crouched by the Christmas tree, rummaging through the presents.
I was 12, so my first thought was, oh my God, Santa is real.
I ran back upstairs and shook my dad awake.
Dad, Santa came back.
He's downstairs.
He was groggy at first, but when my word sank in, his whole face changed.
We went downstairs together, and there was no one there.
The next morning, my uncle went to grab drinks from the first.
basement, only to find a shattered window. Someone had broken into the house. They checked the place,
and it seemed like nothing was missing, until we heard a loud crash from the attic. My dad and
uncle ran up there, shouting at someone, and we all bolted outside to call the cops. When the police
showed up, they went in and came back out with a man in a Santa suit and a knife. Turns out,
there had been multiple break-ins on our street that night, and some of them involved guys dressed as Santa.
Later, we even overheard the cops talking about attempted child kidnappings at the local mall by men in Santa costumes.
Suddenly, Christmas didn't feel so magical anymore.
And finally, the story that still makes my skin crawl.
I was living on my own in a small apartment with my little 10-pound Yorkie.
I was finishing college, and that Christmas I was visiting my dad,
who lived about 350 miles away.
My mom flew in two, and we were supposed to have this cozy family holiday.
Except, the day before Christmas Eve, my mom found out my dad was cheating.
Yeah. That went about as well as you'd imagine.
They screamed at each other non-stop, and by Christmas Eve morning, I couldn't take it anymore.
I packed up my car, tossed my dog in the passenger seat, and decided I'd rather spend Christmas
driving home than in that mess. The roads were snowy, but manageable, and I had four-wheel drive.
After two hours, I stopped at a deserted rest area to let my dog pee. While I was cleaning up after
him, he started making that low rumble in his throat, the sound dogs make when they sent
somethings off. I followed his gaze and froze. Far across the empty lot, was a man. At first,
he was standing still, but then he started walking toward us.
No other cars around.
Just him.
I scooped up my dog and speedwalk to my car.
My Yorkie was squirming and growling like crazy, which he never does.
By the time I looked back again, the man was sprinting.
Full speed.
I threw the dog inside, jumped in, and locked the doors.
But when I tried to start the car, nothing.
The engine just clicked
He reached my window
And slammed his hands against the glass
I need a ride
He said, breathless but monotone
I told him

My dog was barking and clawing at the glass like he wanted to kill the guy. Then he tried the door
handle. That was the moment I grabbed my phone and started dialing 911. The second
he saw that, he backed away, and ran into the rest-stop bathrooms. And just like that, my dog instantly
relaxed. When the cops arrived, they checked the bathrooms, and he was gone. I've never driven
past that rest stop without shivering.
