Starting point is 00:00:00 Okay, let's talk about this because it's all over the place right now. The International Criminal Court, yeah, that ICC in the Hague, the one that usually goes after warlords and genocidal maniacs, is apparently debating whether they're going to haul in Wally Freaking West, aka Kid Flash, and slap him with a charge for crimes against humanity. You read that right, the dude in the yellow and red suit, the one who runs so fast he makes sound barriers cry, is now possibly about to join the same list as some of history's worst monsters. Why? Well, it all went down in Puerto Rico, and let me tell you, this story is a wild one. So here's the setup. Wally's only 24, still basically a kid in superhero years, but he's
Starting point is 00:00:45 already been through enough chaos for three lifetimes. He got his powers as a teenager after being struck by lightning, like literal Zeus-level lightning, while a truckload of industrial chemicals just happened to be leaking near him on the highway. Classic comic book accident stuff. Boom. Suddenly the kid could move at speeds that make fighter jets look like tricycles. He's been clocked at 1,600 miles per hour. For context, a Boeing 747 cruises around 570 miles per hour. That means Kid Flash could run circles around one of those before you even finished buckling your seatbelt. Anyway, Wally's been doing his superhero thing ever since. Helping people, stopping bad guys, all that.
Starting point is 00:01:34 But this time... Yeah, this time he might have gone too far. A few weeks ago, Winona Stevenson, the daughter-in-law of U.S. Vice President Marianne Stevenson, got kidnapped in Puerto Rico. Word on the street is she was snatched up by members of a Colombian drug-grubes. cartel that had expanded operations onto the island. Supposedly, they were planning to ransom her back to the White House for a fat payday. When the news broke, the FBI, DEA, local Puerto Rican cops, basically everybody, started scrambling. But Wally? Wally didn't wait for bureaucrats to draw up
Starting point is 00:02:12 flowcharts and tactical plans. Nope. He packed up and shot straight down south. And that's where the controversy starts. According to reports, and, let's be honest, leaks from people who probably shouldn't be talking, Wally went full vigilante mode. He found some of the cartels guys and, well, let's just say he wasn't exactly asking them nicely for information. Sources say he left more than a dozen of them with busted arms, shattered ribs, and at least two with traumatic brain injuries. One poor bastard is reportedly still in a coma, on the cusp of death, as one one. One ICC prosecutor dramatically put it. Eyewitnesses say Wally was enraged.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Not just determined, like furious, primal, hurricane-level rage. He grabbed cartel members off the streets, pulled them into alleys, and, interrogated them until they coughed up Winona's location. By, interrogated, I mean, yeah, he tortured them. No sugar-coding it. And here's the kicker, it worked. Not long after, Winona was found alive. A little roughed up, sure, but alive.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Wally carried her out himself, and there were photos of him cradling her bridle style as he zipped her to safety. The images blew up on social media. Twitter was divided, one half was crying tears of joy, calling him a hero, while the other half was clutching their pearls, asking, but at what cost? This morning, as VP Stevenson was boarding Air Force 2 on route to Juneau, Alaska to meet Governor Garron about last week's so-called blizzard of the century, reporters swarmed her on the tarmac. NBC's Laura Johnson and CBS's Ellie Evans went in hard, shouting questions. Madam Vice President, do you condone Wally West's alleged torture of Colombian nationals on U.S. territory? Will the administration protect Kid Flash from prosecution? Stevenson didn't answer those questions directly.
Starting point is 00:04:15 She brushed past the crowd, gave a little wave, and simply said, We're grateful Wally brought my daughter-in-law home safe. That was it. No denial. No condemnation. Just thanks. Now, as for U.S. authorities, they're staying tight-lipped. The DOJ hasn't said a word, and Attorney General Alvarez straight-up refused to comment when asked about the incident.
Starting point is 00:04:41 The U.S. Attorney's Office in Concord, New Hampshire, the one technical responsible for Wally since he's a registered resident there, hasn't responded to multiple press inquiries about whether they plan to bring charges. It's messy, legally speaking. Puerto Rico isn't technically foreign soil, it's a U.S. territory. And Wally is a full-blooded U.S. citizen, born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. He's not some mercenary for hire, he's an American superhero. But the ICC doesn't care about that. They're trying to decide. if they have jurisdiction to prosecute him under international law for crimes against humanity. Crimes against humanity.
Starting point is 00:05:22 That phrase hits hard, doesn't it? The thing is, the ICC was built to go after dictators who order massacres, not 24-year-olds in spandex who get a little too rough with kidnappers. But technically, torture falls under their umbrella, and from what's been leaked, Wally wasn't exactly subtle about his methods. One cartel member allegedly told investigators, he moved so fast I couldn't even see him. One second I was standing, the next my arm was snapped backward, and he was screaming in my ear to tell him where the girl was.
Starting point is 00:05:56 Some of the victims are reportedly loyering up, claiming Wally violated their human rights. Others, well, they're too scared to talk. And here's where it gets complicated. On one hand, people are horrified. Human rights groups are coming out swinging, saying we can't let superheroes turn into judge, jury, and executioner. Torture is torture, no matter the circumstances, Amnesty International tweeted. On the other hand, there's a massive groundswell of support for Wally. Social media is flooded with hashtags like hashtag Kid Flash saved her and hashtag let Wally run free.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Even some politicians are defending him. Senator Morales from Texas said, If my daughter was kidnapped, I'd want Kid Flash on the case. He's not the villain here. Meanwhile, Wally himself has been, silent. No interviews. No statements. Nothing.
Starting point is 00:06:56 He's apparently back in New Hampshire, pulled up in his little lakeside cabin outside Concord. Locals say they've seen him jogging in the woods, headphones on, head down, like he's trying to tune out the world. His lawyer, yes, he has won now, issued a brief statement. Mr. West acted under extreme emotional distress and with the sole intent of saving an innocent life. He categorically denies engaging in torture, though he acknowledges using force in a highly volatile situation. We are confident any impartial investigation will conclude Mr. West's actions were justified, but here's the uncomfortable truth, even if you love Wally and believe he's a hero, the optics aren't great.
Starting point is 00:07:38 The ICC wants to make an example out of someone. They've been criticized for years about not going after Westerners, only leaders from Africa and the Middle East. Charging an American superhero? That would send shockwaves. If they move forward, it could trigger a massive diplomatic showdown. The U.S. government isn't exactly known for handing over its citizens to international courts. But let's step back for a second.
Starting point is 00:08:06 Let's really think about this. Wally's only 24. He's been saving lives for years, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders ever since Superman disappeared in 2023. Yeah, let's not even get into that rabbit hole. Maybe, just maybe, the kid snapped under the pressure. He's human, or at least as human as someone who can break the sound barrier barefoot can be. Should he have tortured those cartel guys? No. Obviously not. Torture's not okay. But if you're standing there, a million thoughts racing,
Starting point is 00:08:44 knowing some terrified young woman is chained up somewhere, praying for someone to come save her, could you honestly say you wouldn't do whatever it takes? This isn't some clean-cut comic book story. It's messy, and there are no easy answers. For now, the ICC is mulling over their options, whatever that means. Wally's fate hangs in the balance. Hero or criminal. Savior or war criminal. It depends who you ask. One thing's for sure, this isn't the last we'll hear of it. The end.
