Starting point is 00:00:00 The story of Kristen Smart, a night that changed everything. What was supposed to be just another fun night out for a college freshman, a chance to laugh with friends and feel young and free, ended in a tragedy that has haunted California for decades. This is the story of Kristen Smart, a bright 19-year-old student who vanished after attending a party near her campus in May 1996. For years, the case remained a mystery, and it took more than 20 years for the pieces of the puzzle to finally start falling into place.
Starting point is 00:00:33 This isn't just the tale of one young woman's disappearance. It's also a chilling reminder of how quickly life can change, how predators can hide in plain sight, and how institutions sometimes fail the very people they're supposed to protect. So, let's go back to the very beginning, before that fateful night, to understand who Kristen Smart was, what her dreams looked like,
Starting point is 00:00:56 and how her life intersected with darkness. A Girl with Big Dreams Kristen Denise Smart was born on February 20th, 1977, in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. Her parents, Denise and Stan Smart were American educators working overseas with children of U.S. military families. Kristen was their firstborn and later, two siblings, Lindsay and Matt, joined the family. Being the oldest, Kristen naturally carried a family. kind of leadership energy. She wasn't bossy, but she was independent, adventurous, and curious about the world. Her parents described her as a free spirit. She loved sports, especially swimming
Starting point is 00:01:43 and skiing. But more than anything, Kristen adored traveling. She wanted to see everything, experience everything, and wasn't afraid of stepping into unfamiliar territory. That wanderlust showed early. She spent a summer in London, joined an exchange program in Venezuela, and even worked as a lifeguard in Hawaii. By the time she was a teenager, Kristen had already lived a more adventurous life than many adults twice her age. When the family eventually settled in Stockton, California, Kristen thrived surrounded by love and encouragement. Her parents, both deeply involved in raising their kids, pushed them to work hard, stay curious, and embrace new challenges. For Kristen, college was the next big step. Starting college
Starting point is 00:02:35 At 19, Kristen enrolled at California Polytechnic State University, better known as Cal Poly Poly, in San Luis Obispo. It was about a four-hour drive from home. Like many freshmen, she struggled with the adjustment. Classes were tougher than expected, the campus was big, and she missed her family a lot. Her roommate was a young woman named Crystal Calvin, and they lived in the dorms. Kristen stayed in touch with her family by calling home every Sunday, updating them on her life, her challenges, and her small victories. Her mom always encouraged her, stick with it. You're stronger than you think.
Starting point is 00:03:18 And Kristen was strong. She was also social. She wanted to meet people, make friends, and enjoy their friends. and enjoy the college experience. That's why, when Memorial Day weekend rolled around in May of 1996, and many students left campus for the long holiday, Kristen decided to stay. She wasn't going to sit alone in her dorm, she wanted to live a little. The night of May 24, 1996.
Starting point is 00:03:49 That Friday night, May 24, 1996, would be her last known evening alive. Kristen's neighbor and friend, Margarita Campos, was also staying in the dorms that weekend. The two young women had become close. That night, they were invited to a birthday party for a fellow student. Kristen, always eager to meet people, was excited. She dressed in a gray crop top, black shorts, and red sneakers. Around 8.30 p.m., the two friends arrived at the house where the party was being held. But when they got there, the vibe wasn't what Kristen had been hoping for.
Starting point is 00:04:31 Instead of a lively bash, it was a small gathering, a few people drinking, some sitting around, others playing video games. Kristen wasn't really feeling it. She wanted excitement. Margarita, on the other hand, was more of a homebody and didn't feel like wandering around. After hanging out a bit, the two decided to leave the house and head toward a part of town. where fraternities and student houses often hosted bigger, wilder parties. For Kristen, it was about finding the fun.
Starting point is 00:05:04 For Margarita, it was about wrapping things up. Eventually, Margarita decided she'd had enough for the night. She wanted to go back to her dorm. Kristen asked her to stay, but Margarita declined. Before heading back, though, Margarita handed Kristen her dorm key, since Kristen hadn't brought her wallet, ID, or anything else with her. Kristen was now alone, looking for another party. The last time she was seen.
Starting point is 00:05:35 At some point later that night, Kristen ended up at another student gathering. This one was a little livelier, and she mingled with others. Witnesses recall that she may have been drinking, but details are murky. As the night wound down, Kristen needed to get the night. back to her dorm. She wasn't alone, two students, Cheryl Anderson and Paul Flores, were also leaving. Cheryl and Paul both lived on campus, and the three of them started walking together. Here's where things take a dark turn. Cheryl later said that Kristen seemed intoxicated and needed some help walking. She and Paul both offered support. At some point,
Starting point is 00:06:18 however, Paul insisted he could take Kristen the rest of the way, telling Cheryl she could go ahead. Cheryl hesitated, but Paul reassured her. Cheryl eventually left them. That was the last confirmed time anyone, other than Paul Flores, saw Kristen alive. The next morning. The following morning, Margarita expected to see her friend. She knocked on Kristen's door but got no answer. At first, she thought Kristen was just sleeping in.
Starting point is 00:06:53 After all, it was the weekend. But as the hours passed, worry started to creep in. When Kristen's roommate Crystal came back later that day, the concern grew. Kristen's belongings were untouched. Her wallet, ID, clothes, everything was still in the room, exactly where she had left them. The only thing missing was Kristen. By Sunday, when Kristen didn't show up, her friends knew something was wrong. They reported her missing to campus authorities.
Starting point is 00:07:27 Authorities respond, or don't. Here's one of the most frustrating parts of this case, the university's response. Instead of treating Kristen's disappearance as a possible crime, officials brushed it off. They suggested she had probably gone away for the weekend, maybe partying, may be staying with friends. After all, they said, students do that all the time. That assumption, that a 19-year-old girl was just off somewhere being carefree, would prove devastating.
Starting point is 00:08:00 Those early hours and days are critical in missing-person cases. But for Kristen, they were wasted. Her parents, Denise and Stan, had been away with Kristen's siblings for a swim meet that weekend. when they returned and realized no one had seen their daughter panic set in they knew christin wasn't the type to just disappear she wasn't careless and she always stayed in touch something was wrong to be continued
