Starting point is 00:00:00 It all kicks off with this woman named Shelley Litz. If you asked anyone who knew her, they'd say she was sweet, kind, gentle, the sort of person who didn't speak over others or push back much. She wasn't loud. She wasn't bold. She wasn't the kind to take charge or get into arguments. She was always the friend of someone, the girlfriend of someone, the sister of someone. Never just Shelley. And yeah, that tiny detail right there.
Starting point is 00:00:30 That ends up meaning a lot later on. In high school, Shelly did pretty well. She got good grades, didn't get in trouble, kept to herself. But then she went off to college and made a few decisions she probably wasn't ready for. One of those decisions ended up being not so great with protection. And just like that, at 18 years old, Shelley found out she was pregnant. Now, depending on the source you read, things get a little blurry here. Some say she was in a relationship but the guy bailed.
Starting point is 00:01:03 Others say it was just a one-night thing. Either way, one fact is consistent, Shelly was totally unprepared to be a mom. She felt way too young, too immature, too overwhelmed. But despite all of that, she chose to keep the baby. On November 13, 1991, she gave birth to a baby boy named Derek Litz. On the moment he was born, Derek became her entire world. She was all in. Anything for that little baby. Then, at just seven weeks old, Derek got very, very sick. Doctors were saying it didn't look good. He was so tiny, so fragile, and whatever was wrong with him was serious. But somehow, a miracle, maybe, he pulled through. He survived. That moment changed Shelley forever. From that point on, she was even more attached.
Starting point is 00:02:01 Obsessively so. If Derek cried, she ran. He was never left alone. Ever. He was glued to her, and she to him. She took him everywhere. He never left her arms. This went beyond typical motherly love, it became her entire identity.
Starting point is 00:02:21 When he started talking, same story. If he said he wanted something, He got it. She responded to his needs instantly, every time. And for a while, Derek seemed like a really chill kid. Quiet. Well behaved. Never talked back.
Starting point is 00:02:41 But maybe he didn't have time to talk back, he didn't have to. The second he opened his mouth, he got whatever he asked for. Things took a turn, though, once Derek started throwing fits. And these weren't your typical toddler tantrums. No stomping feet, no flailing arms, no wailing cries. Derek would go eerily quiet. He'd stand still. His tiny fists would shake.
Starting point is 00:03:09 You could see the rage in his eyes, pure fury. Then suddenly, he'd snap. Smash a glass on the floor. Chuck a toy across the room. One story that really shook people up was shown in the documentary Evil Lives Here. Shelly and Derek had gone to the store, just to pick up a few things. No big deal. They passed by the toy aisle and Derek saw a truck he wanted.
Starting point is 00:03:37 He asked her to buy it. She said no, not in the budget. That was all it took. He clutched that toy like it owed him something and just started smashing it, right there in the store. Then he looked up at Shelley and calmly said that if she didn't buy him the truck, he'd destroy everything in the store. And Shelley? She bought the truck. No scolding. No consequences. Just gave in. And this kind of scene became a pattern. Even as a little kid, Derek acted differently. He was super structured. He made routines for himself, even when he was really small. Wake up times, breakfast rituals,
Starting point is 00:04:21 everything had a system. If anything messed with his routine, he lost it. and he didn't really connect with other kids either. He didn't like being touched, didn't like socializing, didn't like playing with others. He had his own world. And the weirdest part, he didn't play like other kids. If you gave him toys, he wouldn't make up stories or give them voices. He'd just take them out of the box, line them up in a perfect row, and stare at them. four hours.
Starting point is 00:04:55 Then he'd quietly pack them away again. That was playtime for Derek. And Shelley? She thought he was just, unique. She didn't see a problem. He wasn't sick. He was just special. She never took him to a psychologist.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Never asked for help. Just assumed he was one of a kind and let him be. Now here's where things really start spiraling. One day, a neighborhood kid came over to play. They went up to Derek's room. Derek did what he always did, took out his toys, lined them up. The other boy, completely unaware of the rules, picked up a toy and started playing. Derek lost it.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Screamed. Tackled the kid. Started punching him. Shelley ran in and separated them. But did she call the kid's parents? Apologize? Nope. She made excuses.
Starting point is 00:05:58 Said it was the other boy's fault for touching Derek's things. In Shelley's eyes, Derek could do no wrong. Ever. If he hit someone, it was their fault. If he broke something, it was because she failed him. She didn't buy the chocolate. She didn't listen. Other people didn't understand him.
Starting point is 00:06:20 But Derek? Perfect. Then Derek turned ten, and things got even more complicated. That's when Shelley met Robert. At first, she kept the relationship under wraps. Didn't tell Derek. But eventually, things got serious. Robert proposed. Shelly had to tell Derek. She warned Robert that her son was difficult. That he couldn't be controlled. Robert said he understood. So they planned a little meeting. Robert and Derek face to face. Robert walked in, touched Derek's head, and jokingly said he was looking for the number 66. You know, the mark of the devil. Some people think it was a dumb joke. Others think it was wildly inappropriate. Either way,
Starting point is 00:07:12 Robert was a strong personality himself. Strict. Regimented. When he moved in, he brought a whole new world of rules with him. Schedules. Bed times. Expectations. Derek hated it. Up until then, he had been the boss at home. Not anymore. Now Robert was calling the shots, and it didn't sit well. Fights erupted. Screaming matches. Derek didn't obey, and Robert didn't back down. And Shelley? She was stuck in the middle, bouncing back in forth. When Robert yelled at Derek, Shelly stayed quiet. But later, she'd sneak into Derek's room and apologize. If Robert took away a toy, Shelly gave it back. If he banned chocolate, she slipped him some. No matter what happened, Derek got what he wanted. Then came Christmas
Starting point is 00:08:11 2002. Derrick woke up early, ran downstairs, ready to tear into the presents. But Robert stopped him. said no one opens gifts until after breakfast. Derek was pissed. They all sat down to eat, but Derek refused to touch his food. Robert said no food, no presents. Derek stayed silent. Didn't eat. Didn't speak.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Sat there staring at his plate for hours. At the end of the day, he went to bed hungry. The next morning, when Robert left for work, Shelly snuck into Derek's room. said sorry, told him he could open the gifts, gave him a big hug, tried to make it better. Derek opened the gifts and found a brand new game console, sources differ on whether it was a PlayStation 2 or an Xbox. Either way, instead of being excited, Derek exploded. He wanted to open it the day before, not now. So in a fit of rage, he smashed it, destroyed it. And what did Did Shelly do?
Starting point is 00:09:22 Said sorry again. Bought him another one. As Derek got older, the household became unbearable. He clashed with Robert more and more. Screaming fights turned to physical confrontations. Shelly was overwhelmed. Robert was frustrated. Derek was completely out of control.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Eventually, things got so bad that Shelley agreed to take Derek to a therapist. for regular therapy, just one session. A little evaluation. And after spending only a short time with him, the therapist gave a shocking answer, Derek might be suffering from depression. To be continued.
