It all kicks off with this woman named Shelley Litz. If you asked anyone who knew her, they'd say she was sweet, kind, gentle, the sort of person who didn't speak over others or push back much. Anything for that little baby. Then, at just seven weeks old, Derek got very, very sick. Doctors were saying it didn't look good. He was so tiny, so fragile, and whatever was wrong with him was serious. But somehow, a miracle, maybe, he pulled through. He survived. That moment changed Shelley forever. From that point on, she was even more attached.

Obsessively so. If Derek cried, she ran. He was never left alone. Ever. He was glued to her, and she to him. She took him everywhere. He never left her arms. This went beyond typical motherly love, it became her entire identity.
