Starting point is 00:00:00 What she did first was take him to a therapist. Not for long-term therapy or some deep psychological work. Nope. Just a one-off session, a quick check-up, a casual assessment kind of thing. They spent an afternoon with the guy, and just like that, boom, the therapist said the kid, Derek, was depressed. He scribbled a prescription for some meds, shrugged off any follow-up, and that was it. Except those pills made everything worse. Whatever little empathy Derek had left got wiped out.
Starting point is 00:00:34 His behavior spiraled out of control. That's when Robert and Shelley, his parents, finally split up for good. Time flew by. Fast forward to 2009. Derek was 17, about to graduate high school, and for the first time in his life, he fell in love. Her name was Mamekuloch. She was three years younger than him, born July 17th, 19th, 19th. in Hayward, Wisconsin. May came from a big, tight-knit family. Five brothers, three sisters. People
Starting point is 00:01:09 always said she was a sweetheart. Sweet, sincere, glowing with innocence. And when she met Derek, she was smitten. Totally head over heels. She loved his confidence, his determination, how sure of himself he was. They were the kind of couple that made people smile when they saw them together. According to Shelley, May was a good influence on her son. Derrick, who was usually so closed off, had suddenly become open, affectionate, even kind. It was like he'd done a complete 180. But then came 2010 and May got pregnant. She was just 16. Everyone expected Derek to explode, but weirdly enough, he took it well. He stepped up. Got more affectionate, more protective. He even asked Shelley if May could move in with them. He wanted to be a father, take care of her, do the right thing. Shelly agreed.
Starting point is 00:02:11 May moved in. The pregnancy went smoothly, and eventually she gave birth to a baby boy, Gabriel. They called him gave. That's when things changed again. Derek started acting like his old self, or maybe worse. He became obsessed with order, control. And babies? Babies are chaos. There's no schedule, no predictability, and that drove Derek nuts. He tried to regulate everything, when the baby ate, when he napped, when he pooped. Once Gabriel started eating solids, Derek kept up the obsession. Next, he became hypersensitive to light in the house. Not electricity costs or energy efficiency, just light itself. He didn't like natural sunlight. Curtain stayed closed 24-7. Neither Shelley nor May were allowed to open them, even just to peek outside.
Starting point is 00:03:09 If they did, Derek would lose it. Then came the real control freak behavior. He started monitoring everything Shelley and May did. Where they went, what time they left, what time they were coming back. especially May. By then she was about 15 or 16, still in school. Derek tracked her class schedule, made sure he knew when she left and when she got back, who she was with. If she came home late, he'd accuse her of cheating. The fights became constant. At first, May just went along with it. He was her older boyfriend, and she was naive. Easy to manipulate. But over time, she's started pushing back. She argued, she stood up for herself. And the more she resisted, the worst Derek got. In the middle of all this chaos, Shelly had to have surgery. She was
Starting point is 00:04:06 hospitalized for a while, leaving Derek and May in charge of the house, and of Lucy, the family's golden retriever. Derek hated Lucy. Too noisy, too messy. He griped about her shedding, barking, everything. He complained constantly. When Shelley finally came back home, Lucy was gone. She searched everywhere, asked May, who had no idea. But Derek? He just said the dog got hit by a car, said it flat out, emotionless, like he was reading a weather report. And Shelley just knew, deep down, she knew he'd killed the dog. Something in her gut told her the truth. That's when things really started boiling over. May and Shelley were getting braver.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Talking back, challenging Derek, breaking curfew. They started confiding in each other. And Derek didn't like that one bit. So he made a move, a really disturbing one. He bought an AK-47. Just the presence of that weapon in the house said it all. He didn't even need to say anything. The message was clear,
Starting point is 00:05:20 fall in line or else. But instead of intimidating Shelley and May, the gun made them more determined to get out. They knew they had to do something. They considered three options. One, confront Derek, try to talk sense into him. But they knew that wouldn't work, he wouldn't listen, he'd get worse. Two, grab the baby and run. But Derek would definitely chase them, and they feared what he might do. Three, May escapes alone, hides, then figures out how to get Gabriel to safety later. May chose the third option. But things didn't go as planned. On September 8, 2012, just after turning 18, she packed her things and ran. When Derek realized she was gone, he went berserk. Tore through the house, flung open all the curtains for once, and started pacing like a madman.
Starting point is 00:06:16 repeating over and over that she betrayed him, that she ran off with another man, that she was going to replace him as Gabriel's father. He couldn't stop. He just spiraled, ranting in circles, not listening to anyone. Then he walked out the door and disappeared. Hours passed. Nothing. That evening, he came back like nothing happened. Later, he left again for some meeting. When he returned, parked to him. He returned, parked to him. He was back like nothing happened. Later, he returned, parked in a right outside the house was May's car. Shelly thought May might have come back to talk. But when she went inside, there was a trail of blood. Not just a few drops, a lot. She followed it, terrified. It led to the downstairs bathroom. She opened the door and froze.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Inside was May's body. It was brutal. The autopsy would later describe it as a total massacre. She had stabbed wounds in her chest, back, arms, defensive wounds. She tried to fight back. But what killed her was a deep slash across her throat. The scene was horrific. May had suffered horribly before she died. Shelley immediately called 911. But Gabriel was nowhere to be found. Within hours, the case exploded. Amber alerts went out. Derrick's and Gabriel's faces were all over the news.
Starting point is 00:07:46 but nobody had seen them. Not neighbors, not friends. It was like they vanished into thin air. Shelly was terrified that Derek might harm Gabriel, his own son. She was racked with guilt. Felt like she had raised a monster. That it was all her fault. Then, just after 5 a.m. on September 9th, 2012, something miraculous happened.
Starting point is 00:08:14 A motel worker recognized Derek checking in. His face was plastered everywhere. They called the cops. A SWAT team showed up. Guns drawn, ready to kick the door in. But Derek calmly walked out with his hands up. No fight, no resistance. And Gabriel?
Starting point is 00:08:35 He was okay. Completely unharmed. Oblivious to what had happened. They took Gabriel into protective custody and brought Derek in for questioning. And he confessed to everything. Just like that. But here's the weird part. The part that leaves you shaking your head.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Derek asked to make a phone call, and called his mom. On the phone, he was calm. Too calm. Apologized, said he loved her. Said he loved his son. Asked her to take care of Gabriel. Like he was going away on a short trip. Like what he did wasn't that big a deal.
Starting point is 00:09:16 But the evidence? Oh, it was everywhere. Blood in his car, on his clothes, on the murder weapon they found in his vehicle. The case was airtight. Everyone expected a harsh sentence. And rightly so. The murder was savage. Clearly personal.
Starting point is 00:09:37 Derek was a danger. But then Shelley did something shocking. She stood up in court and defended him. Said he was a good person. Said he wasn't capable of something like this. That she loved him, believed in him. This, after she'd once admitted to herself that he was a monster. Now she denied it all.
Starting point is 00:10:00 Despite her defense, Derek was convicted. He struck a plea deal, 40 years in prison, with the possibility of parole. Case closed, right? Not quite. Turns out, even behind bars, Derek was still obsessed. He tried to hire a hitman to kill May's lover, who, by the way, might not have even existed. It didn't work, though. Cops intercepted the plan before it got anywhere. As for Gabriel, custody went to Shelley. She swore she wouldn't make the same mistakes again.
Starting point is 00:10:36 So now, here we are. You've heard the whole story. What do you think? Does the ending make sense? Would you have done something different? The end.
