Starting point is 00:00:00 On March 20, 2022, something happened in a quiet little corner of Italy that honestly sounds like the beginning of one of those crime documentaries you binge on Netflix. Picture this, a man is out for a walk, nothing unusual, just enjoying the peace and fresh air of a rural area in Borno, Italy. It's one of those places that always feels untouched, clean, calm, like a postcard. He liked going there because it was the kind of place where you could breathe in just disconnect. But that day, he stumbles onto a scene that instantly makes his stomach turn. Scattered across the ground are several garbage bags.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Not just one or two, an actual pile dumped in the middle of nature. Now, normally finding trash in a pretty area is enough to make anyone angry. People go there to relax, to escape noise, to connect with nature, and here was someone who clearly didn't give a damn, tossing bags like it was a dump. He was furious, the kind of anger that comes from seeing something you care about treated like dirt. Being the kind of guy who doesn't just complain but actually does something, he decided he'd pick them up, throw them away, maybe report it later. He walked over, bent down, and when he touched one of the bags, everything changed.
Starting point is 00:01:20 The bag was ripped open and from the tear he could clearly see, fingers. Human fingers not a mannequin, not some Halloween prank, real flesh. He froze, and you can imagine the cold shock running through his body. That moment when you realize what you're looking at is something no one should ever have to stumble across. He didn't waste a second. He pulled out his phone and dialed the police immediately. Within minutes, officers were at the scene, sealing off the area.
Starting point is 00:01:54 They opened the bags, checked the contents, and the whole. horror became very, very real. Inside the trash bags were body parts. A human body had been chopped up and stuffed into the bags like garbage. The police quickly realized they weren't just looking at an accidental death or a body dumped in one piece. This was brutal, deliberate, and cruel. The remains belonged to a young woman, estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old. The cause of death was beyond disturbing. Her face had been completely disfigured, beaten to the point of being almost unrecognizable. She had been tortured, then her throat was cut. Afterward, her body was dismembered into pieces, and each part was partially burned, almost as if the killer had tried to get
Starting point is 00:02:43 rid of evidence but didn't finish the job. And as if that wasn't already horrific enough, there were signs she had been frozen at some point. By the time investigators were standing there, was so badly damaged that identifying her seemed almost impossible. But there was one crucial detail. This woman had tattoos. A lot of them, around eight in total. Tattoos tell stories, and in this case, they might be the only way to give her back her name. She had a bow design, roses, long quotes, high-heeled shoes, and a leopard print pattern inked
Starting point is 00:03:20 onto one of her thighs. The police immediately realized these tattoos could be the key. They checked missing persons reports across the country, specifically looking for any young woman with tattoos matching those descriptions. Strangely enough, nothing came up. No reports, no matches, nobody who seemed to fit. So, when the official channels failed, the police turned to the public. They went to the media. Newspapers and newspapers and TV stations reported that a body had been discovered, heavily mutilated, and that the victim had distinctive tattoos. They listed them all, the bow, the roses, the leopard spots on her thigh. The idea was simple, if anyone recognized the tattoos, maybe they could call in and give them a
Starting point is 00:04:09 lead. And that's exactly what happened. Two days later, the phone rang. A man had seen the descriptions and was convinced he knew exactly who the victim was. According to him, the tattoos weren't random at all. He said they belonged to a woman he followed online, specifically an adult film actress. He knew her from her videos, from her photos, and from her only fans' account. Her stage name was Charlotte Angie. Now here's where things get strange. Police looked her up, found her social media accounts, and everything seemed fine. She was active online, posting photos, liking comments, engaging with her followers. She didn't look like someone who had just been brutally murdered.
Starting point is 00:04:59 The tattoos matched perfectly, but the woman they were watching on Instagram and other platforms was alive and interacting like normal. So what was going on? Hi, I'm Darren Marler, host of the Weird Darkness podcast. I want to talk about the most important tool in my podcast belt. Preaker is the all-in-one platform that makes it easy to record, host, and distribute your show everywhere, from Apple Podcasts to Spotify. It wasn't her real identity. The police had no way of linking the persona to an actual woman they could contact. They didn't know her real name, her family, or even where she lived. The mystery deepened, and it's at this point that a journalist named Andrea Tortelli decided to step in.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Andrea was fascinated by the story, like any good investigative reporter would be. Something about the case nodded him, and he couldn't resist digging deeper. He started reaching out, sending messages to Charlotte, on Instagram and even on only fans, but got no reply. It was like talking to a wall. Still, he kept at it, piecing together scraps of information until he eventually discovered her real name, Carol Maltesey. Once he had her actual identity, things moved fast.
Starting point is 00:07:07 He contacted her family and explained what was going on. Her relatives were shocked. They told him Carol. was alive, that she had recently had COVID, then gone traveling, and that she was in touch with them by WhatsApp. They insisted she was fine. Andrea wasn't so sure. He asked for her phone number, wanting to speak to her directly. When he finally managed to reach Carol, she answered kindly enough.
Starting point is 00:07:36 She reassured him she was okay and told him not to worry. But when Andrea asked if he could call her, she refused, saying, she was too busy. That set off alarm bells in his head. To test things, Andrea asked her to send a short voice message, just a quick recording of her saying hello or confirming she was all right. And that's when she went silent. No more replies. Nothing. Andrea had a gut feeling at that moment. If someone was pretending to be Carol Maltesey, sending texts and keeping up appearances, but couldn't produce something as simple as a voice note, then maybe the awful truth was exactly what it seemed, the killer had her phone and was pretending to be her. Andrea went straight to the police with his suspicions.
Starting point is 00:08:26 So who was Carol Maltesey really? Let's rewind a bit. Carol, full name Carol Deborah Maltisi, was born on December 23, 1995, in Monza, Italy. Her parents were Josefina and Fabio Maltisi. Not long after she was born, the family moved to Vareze. From the outside, she seemed like a typical girl growing up, with nothing particularly strange about her childhood. According to friends and family, she was sweet, outgoing, and had a love for travel, fashion, and nature. At 18, she moved to Milan to study fashion. She was busy, studying in the mornings, working at a perfume shop in the afternoons. Life wasn't easy, but she pushed through.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Around this time, her parents divorced. Her father moved back to the Netherlands, remarried, and had more children, while her mother stayed in Italy. The divorce hit Carol hard, but she didn't let it derail her completely. She kept working and studying, trying to build a future. During her time at university, she met her first serious boyfriend. Things went well for a while, and two years later, she became pregnant. The couple decided to keep the baby. Carol paused her studies, moved in with her boyfriend's family, and found work in a shoe store to help support
Starting point is 00:09:54 their new life together. For a while, it seemed stable. But eventually, when their son was three, the relationship fell apart. Carol moved back to Milan. This created a huge challenge. Her little boy was very young and deeply connected to his home in Verona, where his grandparents and father lived. Carol, meanwhile, was living in Milan, trying to find steady work and housing. She wanted custody but knew she couldn't provide the stability needed just yet. So she stayed in touch, visiting, calling, and planning for the day when she could give him a secure home. Her dream was always to be a good mother, but first, she needed a foundation. Then came the pandemic. Carol was working in a shoe store when lockdown hit, and like many others, she lost her job.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Suddenly, she was stuck at home with no income and plenty of time to think. Like millions of others, she noticed how everyone had turned to social media. People were glued to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, scrolling endlessly, looking for distraction. Hi, I'm Darren Marler, host of the Weird Darkness podcast. She studied fashion and loved beauty and style, so she decided to give it a try.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Maybe she could make something out of it. She started posting lifestyle content, outfits, makeup looks, hairstyles, on Instagram. At first, nothing really happened. Just a few likes from friends. But soon she noticed a pattern, whenever she posted photos that were a bit more provocative, short skirts, low necklines, engagement spiked. more likes, more comments, more attention. And that's when she discovered only fans.
Starting point is 00:12:43 To be continued.
