Starting point is 00:00:00 The Disappearance of Carol, A Twisted Tale. So, let me tell you a story that honestly feels like it was ripped straight out of some dark Netflix true-crime docusories. At first, it sounds like one of those urban legends, but nope, this is as real as it gets. We're talking about deception, manipulation, a fake online life, and a murder that shook a community. And it all starts with a guy named Davide and a woman who, sadly, didn't get to live long. enough to see what he was capable of. For two whole months, yeah, two months, not two days, not a weekend, this dude managed to convince almost everyone around him that his girlfriend, or let's say, the woman in his life,
Starting point is 00:00:44 was still alive. He wasn't just ghosting people on her behalf, he was actually pretending to be her. He had her phone, her passwords, her access to social media, and even her money. He took over everything like he was auditioning for some sick role where he plays both himself and her at the same time. Now, before I dive into the details, let me just say this. The level of commitment it takes to pull something like this off is insane. Like, think about it, most of us struggle to keep up with one Instagram account, replying to DMs, keeping stories updated. Imagine running your own life and someone else's life simultaneously.
Starting point is 00:01:26 It's disturbing, but all of you. also a little mind-blowing. Anyway, back to the point. The day of the crime, Davide and Carol had spent time together. They took pictures, shot some videos, basically created enough digital proof that could be used later to make it seem like she was alive and well. With her phone in his hand, he answered her WhatsApp messages. He wrote to her mom, to the father of her kid, to her friends, literally everyone who would have
Starting point is 00:01:56 suspected something was wrong. He even kept up her social media presence, posting pictures and responding to comments, making sure no one raised alarms. And while he was playing this disgusting double role, he was also living comfortably off her money. He paid bills, utilities, moved money around, and acted like nothing weird was going on. The craziest part. He had a ready-made excuse, COVID. See, Davide himself had tested positive, so he was already off work. Perfect timing, right? He told everyone Carol was also sick, lost her voice, couldn't go out, needed to stay home. And people bought it. I mean, back then, if someone said they had COVID, you didn't question it much. You just assumed they were isolating. For weeks, this excuse worked like a charm.
Starting point is 00:02:54 But eventually, people started asking questions. Carol had events, commitments, work stuff, yet she wasn't showing up anywhere. She wasn't apologizing, wasn't sending proper explanations. When she did, reply, it was cold, short, kind of robotic. It didn't feel like her anymore. By late January, a guy named Eddie messaged her, offering an apartment. Super sweet gesture, right? He wrote on WhatsApp, saying he had this nice place for her.
Starting point is 00:03:30 But the reply he got? Totally off. Instead of being grateful or even curious, the, Carol, on the other side just said she already had a house. No thanks, no emojis, nothing. Just flat. If you've ever texted with someone you know well, you can feel when something's off. That was one of those. moments. Fast forward to March, Carol was supposed to perform at shows in Milan, on the 11th and 13th.
Starting point is 00:04:01 These were big deals. But she never showed. No calls, no texts, no apologies. She just vanished from her real-life commitments. And since her online presence was still alive, people just assumed she was busy or being distant. Nobody went straight to the police because technically, she wasn't missing, she was texting. Now here's where Davide got sloppy. After two months of playing puppet master, he relaxed. On March 19, he grabbed several bags and dumped them in a rural area near a town called Borno. Thought he was done with it. Problem solved, right? Wrong. The very next day, Someone stumbled upon those bags, looked inside, and immediately called the police. This is where the story takes a sharp turn.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Remember how I said Carol had tattoos all over her body? Leopard print designs, ribbons, high heels, little phrases. When the police found the remains, they didn't release graphic photos, but they did publish detailed descriptions of the tattoos.
Starting point is 00:06:14 That was enough. A follower recognized the patterns and reached out to authorities, giving them a name. But here's the twist, the name they gave wasn't her real name. It was her stage name, her online persona, Charlotte Angie. And when investigators checked her social media, everything seemed fine. She was alive, posting content, responding to people. From the outside, there was no problem. That's when journalists.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Andrea Tortelli stepped in. This guy deserves a round of applause, honestly. He dug deeper, tracked down Charlotte's real name, Carol, and then contacted her family. That's when the truth started to unravel. Her family revealed they hadn't spoken to her directly in two months. Everything had been through WhatsApp messages. No calls, no video chats, no in-person visits. and when Andrea himself tried to reach her, she never sent a single voice note. It was all text, all typed. Armed with this information, Andrea went to the police. Authorities connected the dots quickly.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Who had access to her phone? Who was living with her? Who was conveniently isolated with COVID and feeding everyone the same excuse? Davidei. When they brought him in for question, he denied it at first. Said she was alive, said she had COVID, said she'd gone traveling. But the lies didn't last. Just a few days later, Davide showed up at the police station and confessed. He claimed he couldn't live with the guilt anymore. But here's the thing, his story didn't add up.
Starting point is 00:08:05 He said he didn't plan anything, that it wasn't premeditated. According to him, it just happened in the heat of the moment, during a video recording. He lost control, hit her too hard, and then, as if that wasn't bad enough, he said he cut her throat to end her suffering. Yeah, right. Nobody believed that. It sounded more like an excuse than remorse. Naturally, he was arrested and formally charged with murder. He even tried to apologize publicly, saying he was sorry to Carol's parents, to her child, to everyone. claimed he wished he could turn back time that he'd give his life to undo what he did. But in 2023, the court didn't buy his crocodile tears. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Later, that sentence got re-evaluated, and he ended up with life in prison. No parole. No, get out in 20 years. Just the rest of his days behind bars. And honestly, That's where he belongs. Reflections Now, stepping back from the timeline, let's just think about how wild this whole thing is.
Starting point is 00:09:22 For two months, Davide managed to keep up the illusion that Carol was alive. Two months is a long time. If you think about your own life, imagine going two months without seeing a close friend, without hearing their actual voice. Would you start to worry? Probably. But when there are texts, when Instagram stories keep popping up, your brain tricks you into believing everything's fine. It's scary how easy it is to fake a digital life. All he needed was her phone, her passwords, and some recycled photos.
Starting point is 00:09:59 That's it. Nobody really questions a person's online presence. If the account is active, we assume the person behind it is too. And that's what makes this case so chilling. What's even darker is the psychology of Davide. Did he really feel guilty, or did he confess because the walls were closing in? People like him often fake remorse because it's their last card to play. I'm sorry, I couldn't control myself, is the classic line.
Starting point is 00:10:30 But remorse doesn't bring back the person whose life you took. And in Carroll's case, his actions after the crime, faking her existence, spending her money, lying to her loved ones, show more calculation than loss of control. If he truly lost his mind in the heat of the moment, why cover it up so carefully? Why pretend she was alive for weeks? Why move money, pay bills, dump the body in bags? That's not impulse. That's strategy.
Starting point is 00:11:03 And then there's the family. Imagine being Carol's parents, or her child. For weeks, you think she's alive, just sick, maybe distant. You text her, and she replies. You don't hear her voice, but hey, people don't always send voice notes, right? Only later do you find out every word came from the man who murdered her. That level of betrayal is beyond cruel. Final thoughts.
Starting point is 00:11:34 So here we are. David A. Fontana, 45. Darren Marler, host of the Weird Darkness podcast. I want to talk about the most important tool in my podcast belt. Spreaker is the all-in-one platform that makes it easy to record, host, and distribute your show everywhere, from Apple Podcasts to Spotify. That's S-P-R-K-E-R dot com. five years old, locked away for life. Carol, gone too soon, remembered by her tattoos, her art, her presence. And the rest of us, left to reflect on how fragile the boundary is between
Starting point is 00:12:51 online life and reality. This case isn't just about a crime of passion. It's about control, manipulation, and the terrifying realization that someone can fake an entire person's existence for months if they're determined enough. And that's the story. Discerving, tragic, and unforgettable. Now, here's my question to you. Do you think Davida was really sorry? Or do you think it was just another performance, like the two-month act he put on while pretending to be Carol? The end.
