You ever get that weird sense that something's off, like someone's watching you even though no one's there?
Starting point is 00:01:10 Yeah. That's the vibe I got the first time I stepped foot on Peapatch Island. It's up in the northeast corner of Delaware, right smack in the middle of the Delaware River. The whole place is less than a mile long, but man, does it pack a punch? They've got this old Civil War fort called Fort Delaware just sitting there like it's waiting for something, or someone. They say the place used to house Confederate prisoners after Gettysburg. These days, it's a public historical site. You can get there by ferry, and most of the tours are all about the war, the soldiers, the old stonework, you know the deal. But what they don't really
Starting point is 00:01:50 tell you is that the island's crawling with something else. Something that doesn't quite belong to history, if you know what I mean. When I was a kid, probably 10 or 11, my family took one of those fall tours. I was zipping around the place like I'd just down three cans of soda. The guide even said I was braver than most kids, whatever that means. But I wasn't being brave. Not really. I was running, sure, but not for fun. I had this odd, creeping feeling that there was something hanging out at the back of the group. Not a person, something worse. It was like walking across thin ice, knowing it could shatter under you any second. I didn't want to be the one lagging behind. Every time the group stopped, I'd tug at my mom's sleeve and whisper, let's keep going. I couldn't
Starting point is 00:02:43 explain it, but there was this weird pressure, like the kind that builds in your ears before a storm. My stomach kept doing somersaults and I swear, something was following us. Not loud, not obvious, just there. Things hit a whole new level of creepy when we went down a flight of stairs into the old solitary confinement cells. Dark, tight spaces. Barely any light. The air was heavy, and the kind of cold that makes your bones ache. Other adults were casually stepping in and out of the tiny rooms, chatting and snapping pictures like it was a fun little Halloween trip.
Starting point is 00:03:21 But I stopped dead in my tracks. Couldn't move. I wasn't scared, I was frozen. Something inside one of those cells felt alive. Angry. Not like just, had a bad day, angry, but boiling, violent rage. It wanted out, and it wanted to hurt someone. I felt it, down to my core.
Starting point is 00:03:45 My mom tried to pull me in gently, but I couldn't move. Behind me, I felt breath on my neck. Not warm. Cold and hollow. Like an exhale that never had lungs to begin with. I dropped into a crouch. Didn't scream, didn't cry. Just sank down and shut my eyes. And that's when I saw them. Two dark shapes, huge, almost touching the ceiling, just looming over me. I don't know how long I sat like that before my dad came looking. As soon as he touched my shoulder, it was like I could breathe again. But the damage was done. My stomach was churning, and I just wanted to get off that island.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Even while we were walking back toward the exit, I kept my eyes shut. That feeling of being followed. Still there. Closer now. Practically breathing down my back. I didn't dare look. That night, I had a dream, no, more like a vision. I was cold, starving, trapped in a cramped spree. with others around me, packed so tightly we couldn't sit. I could hear their whispers, their pain. That's when I realized, I wasn't just having a nightmare. I was feeling what those prisoners must have felt in those cells. The spirits had reached out, and they'd made sure I knew what they'd been through. I think kids can sense things that adults can't. We're not trained to ignore the weird stuff yet. I felt two spirits that day. I didn't see them. I didn't see them
Starting point is 00:05:22 clearly, but they saw me. And sometimes, I wonder if I went back, would they remember me? Fast forward about nine years later, I was living near the coast in England. My buddy and I used to hang out at this old caravan site a few miles from home, right on the beach. Beautiful during summer, but come autumn, the place turned into something else entirely. Most of the tourists were gone, and it felt, empty in a weird way. One chilly night in October, there was a bonfire on site, music, food, drinks, the works. We stayed till it all died down, then just wandered the beach. Eventually, we called a taxi and waited by the cliff's edge,
Starting point is 00:06:06 where the road curled along the sea. The breeze was light, almost too quiet, and I noticed a glow about 30 yards away near the edge. There's so much rugby on Sports Exeter from Sky. They've asked me to read the whole lad at the same speed I usually use for the legal bit at the end. Here goes. At first, I thought someone had started another fire, but there wasn't anyone nearby. I nudged my friend. You seeing that, he squinted, nodded. Looks like someone's trying to build a fire, right by the edge. We stood there watching it grow. Then, the weirdest thing happened. Something blue started glowing in the center of the fire. I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. But then it started taking shape, arms, legs, torso. A guy appeared out of nowhere. He looked enough. Dressed in a faded blue boiler suit with suspenders, wearing an orange shirt underneath
Starting point is 00:07:55 and this old school tan cowboy hat. And he was digging, like, frantically. Dirt flying everywhere. I turned to my friend again, face pale. Dude. You seeing what I'm seeing, he didn't say a word. Just stared. The firelight flickered, and the man kept digging. I was half convinced it had to be some kind of of hologram. But there was actual dirt piling up. He was real. And yet, not. As he got deeper, only his upper body visible, the image started to fade. Then poof, gone. The fire, the man, the digging, all of it vanished like it was never there. We didn't move. Didn't say a word. Just stood there in silence, our minds racing. I have expected one of us to say, let's go check it out. But no way. We both just waited for that damn taxi like our lives
Starting point is 00:08:56 depended on it. The next day, I brought it up. My friend looked me dead in the eye and said, What fire? Like he'd wiped the whole thing from his brain. Flat out denied it ever happened. I didn't push. Some people just can't handle the weird. They'd rather pretend it didn't happen. Years later, I told another friend about it. She asked if I'd ever thought the whole thing might have been an omen, like a warning about something in my future. I don't know. Maybe it was. All I know is, if I could go back in time, I'd tell myself to wait for the taxi somewhere else.
Starting point is 00:09:37 Anywhere else. Now let me take you even further back, to 1987. I was renting this old Victorian house in Atlanta with four roommates. gorgeous place, over a hundred years old. Two stories, five bedrooms, full basement. It was located in Inman Park, a historic neighborhood built back after the city was burned during the Civil War. We were all young, 20s, just starting our lives. Sharing rent made sense. We figured the house was big enough to handle all of us. What we didn't know was, we weren't alone. One week in, we all got a rude awakening at 3 a.m. Our roommate Hannah let out a blood-curdling scream. We rushed to her
Starting point is 00:10:23 room and found her sitting up in bed, crying her eyes out. She told us she'd woken up to see a shadowy figure standing right next to her. It didn't move when she screamed, just turned around and walked out the room. No sound. No door creak. Nothing. We searched the entire house that night, top to bottom. No intruders, no busted windows, no sign anyone had broken in. We tried to convince Hannah she'd had a nightmare. She wasn't having it. Swore up and down she was wide awake. After that night, she refused to be alone in the house. Ever. Two weeks later, another incident. A huge crash in the hallway woke all five of us up. We ran out and found the full-length mirror on the bathroom door shattered all over the floor. Odd thing was, the frame was still
Starting point is 00:11:19 bolted tight. Just the glass had fallen out. We blamed it on poor craftsmanship or vibrations from traffic. But it never made a sound before. Not once. We cleaned it up and went back to bed. But that wasn't the end. One day, I was home alone watching TV. Three candles on the mantles suddenly flew off like someone had swatted them. No breeze, no draft, no cat. Then came the disappearing stuff. My daughter, Ellie, had this ankle pain and we went to see VHI orthopedics. They actually picked up on her fatigue issues. So they brought in a rheumatologists and just a few small tests. They realized that Ellie was celiac. So what was brilliant was that VHI had a pediatric dietation ready to help manage her diet really felt seamless.
Starting point is 00:12:16 VHI, because your health means everything. You'd put down your keys or wallet and boom, gone. Only to find them later in the weirdest spots. Once, someone's car keys vanished from the kitchen and showed up right in the middle of their bed. No one confessed. And no one could explain it. I think back on all those experiences.
Starting point is 00:12:41 and I realize, whatever was in that house had been there long before us. Watching. Waiting. Maybe trying to make us leave. Or maybe just reminding us whose home it really was. To be continued.
