Starting point is 00:00:00 I packed my bags and moved in with Mary. She had a cozy little house full of life, kids, a dog, a couple of cats, and for a while, everything was perfect. It felt like one of those movie families where nothing goes wrong. I became a part of it, like some missing puzzle piece that finally found its spot. At first, Alice, Mary's partner, was all right. She wasn't exactly warm or affectionate, but she did her part. took care of the kids, walked the dog, fed the cats.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Always polite, always paying attention. Too much attention, in hindsight. It was like she was studying everything, how the kids acted, how Mary reacted, who got what kind of affection. It felt, calculated. There was something off about the way she looked at the kids, especially when Mary dropped everything to comfort them. Alice would step in awkwardly, trying to shift the moment, changed the subject. She didn't like the kids getting love that wasn't directed at her. It was weird, jealous, almost possessive.
Starting point is 00:01:08 She started complaining about the kids. Said they were spoiled, had no discipline, were too loud, too wild. Eventually, she asked Mary if she could handle the discipline, and for reasons I still don't understand, Mary agreed. The yelling started. Then punishments. Nothing too crazy at first, just strict stuff, timeouts, yelling. But then Mary got sick. Real sick.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Multiple sclerosis, they said. And the meds they gave her, morphine mostly, turned her into a ghost. She'd spend hours on the couch staring at nothing. It wasn't long before she admitted it, the drugs were more important to her than her own kids. And so, there I was, with only Caleb, barely one year old, by my side. He couldn't do anything on his own, just a baby. Meanwhile, the older kids, Tyler and Jesse, were running wild, being kids, just trying to stay happy. Alice took over completely. But she didn't do it like a mother. She did it like a dictator. Every morning, she'd leave for work. But before she did she did, she did,
Starting point is 00:02:23 she'd tie Tyler and Jesse to the bed. No daycare, no relatives, no neighbors, just tied up, door shut. Alone all day. At night, she'd come home, untie them, feed them something quick, let them use the bathroom, then back to bed. The next morning, rinse and repeat. Eventually, the kids figured out how to escape their ties. They'd free each other, play quietly, try to enjoy their little prison. When Alice found out, she separated them, locked them in different rooms. Things got darker. She hit them with anything, spoons, sticks, whatever was nearby. She'd burn them with cigarettes, scream at them, humiliate them. Tyler got it the worst. Why? Because of the color of his skin. That's it. No other reason. The kids would go hours without using the
Starting point is 00:03:22 bathroom and end up wetting themselves. Their food? It went from basic pasta to just half a sandwich, white bread and that's it. They could only use the bathroom when told. If they went without permission, they were punished. Sometimes, they'd knock on the walls to talk to each other. It was the only way. And when Alice heard it, more punishment, more pain. Weekends were different. older stepkids would visit, and suddenly the house transformed. Alice dressed Tyler and Jesse up, fed them well, let them run around. It was all fake, of course, but she made it look good.
Starting point is 00:04:05 Happy kids, happy pets, happy house. But it was all just an act. Deep down, she knew she couldn't keep this up forever. So in 1998, she hatched a plan. She told Mary that if they got custody of all the kids, they'd get financial help. It'd be easier. Mary, none doubt and passive, said sure. But others believe Alice had different motives.
Starting point is 00:04:33 It wasn't about money, it was about control. Tyler and Jesse were already broken and obedient, but on weekends they still had the chance to talk. To tell the older siblings what was going on. That was a risk Alice couldn't take. So the plan was to get custody of all the kids, no one could leave, no one could tell. They managed to win custody of Darrell and Danny. But Marissa?
Starting point is 00:05:00 She lived with her dad and stepmom Astra, and she was well cared for. There was no way a judge would give Alice custody of her, and for now, she backed off. With five kids in the house now, things looked normal for a while. The kids went to school. Tyler and Jesse went for the first time ever. They'd never set foot in a classroom before. Didn't even know how to behave. Couldn't ask for help, didn't know how to make friends, even struggled using the bathroom. After two weeks, Alice pulled the plug. It was too risky. The kids might slip up, say something. She told the school they'd be homeschooled from now on and
Starting point is 00:05:43 isolated them all over again. Then she dropped the biggest bomb. From now on, they weren't to call her Alice. They had to call her, Dad. She laid down new rules, no toys, no furniture, no sitting during meals, no cushions or blankets. No using the bathroom without permission, no eating without permission. Any disobedience? More beatings, more burns, more insults.
Starting point is 00:06:13 The worst punishment of all. The closet. At the end of the whole. hallway. Tiny, dark, no light, no airflow. First it was a couple of hours. Then half a day. Then whole days. Then, weeks. Even months. In the dead of summer, she crammed all four kids into that hellhole. No toilet. No space. They'd sweat, vomit, collapse. It was pitch black all day. They clawed at the walls, hit their heads in desperation, tried everything to escape. But nothing worked. They were stuck, broken. Alice later said she didn't know what else to do.
Starting point is 00:07:01 That she tried every method and the closet was the only thing that worked. She even said, maybe someone else should take them. I should have asked for help sooner, but the damage was done. The kids developed mental disorders. Jesse, the smallest, developed trichotillomania, he'd pull his own hair out. Not just from his head, but his arms, eyebrows, even eyelashes. Panic attacks, anxiety, trauma beyond words. And now, Alice had a new problem, Marissa. She came over on weekends, expecting a normal visit.
Starting point is 00:07:39 The fake show had to go on every time. But Alice couldn't keep it up much longer. Marissa was smart. She was catching on. So what did Alice do? She tried to bring Marissa into her sick little world. Tried to manipulate her, make her a part of the madness. To be continued.
