All right, here we go.
I'm going to tell you this story the way I experienced it, in my own words, and I swear to you this all
actually happened. It's long, and it's still one of the creepiest things that's ever gone down in my life,
and I promise I'm not making this up. Looking back now, I can laugh about parts of it with my friends,
but at the time, terrifying. So, buckle up, because this is one of those stories that sticks with you.
So the year was 2008. I was 19 years old, living in Brisbane, Australia. My life at that point wasn't
anything out of the ordinary. I was living at home with my parents and my younger sister, who was
16 at the time. We had a pretty standard suburban life. My parents were strict in some ways,
but overall we had a good setup. I didn't have a whole lot of responsibilities, just working
part-time jobs, hanging out with friends, and doing the usual stuff a 19-year-old would do.
The story really starts when my dad decided to upgrade our entertainment situation.
He had just gotten Foxtel, basically cable TV in Australia.
Now, this was a big deal for us.
I mean, having access to all those extra channels felt fancy.
The only problem was, only the TV in the lounge room could use the cable box.
My room?
Nope, I was stuck with regular old channels, and honestly, I was jealous.
I really wanted to have Foxtel in my room, too.
because who wants to fight over the lounge TV every time you want to watch something different from your family.
Now, here's where my dad comes in with what seemed like a genius solution at the time.
Instead of paying $99 or whatever it gossed to get a second cable box installed,
he went out and bought this AV transmitter and receiver kit.
Basically, it was two little boxes,
one you plugged into the cable TV in the lounge,
and it would send the video signal wirelessly to the receiver box in another room.
Simple idea, right?
Plug it in, boom.
Instant fox tell in my room without having to fork out more money.
Dad was pretty proud of himself for figuring out a cheaper solution.
So one Saturday, I decided it was time to set this thing up.
It was a lazy afternoon, just me and my younger sister at home.
She was upstairs in her room doing her own thing,
probably texting or listening to music like she always did back then.
I dragged the box into my room, ripped it open, and started hooking it up.
I had no idea what I was doing at first. I kept fumbling with the cables, plugging them into the wrong
spots, switching channels back and forth, trying to get some sort of picture to come through.
For ages, nothing worked, just static and that annoying fuzz. I must have gone back and forth
between the lounge and my room ten times, double-checking connections and trying to figure out
what I was doing wrong. Finally, after what felt like forever, I got something. The screen started
fuzzing in like it was trying to lock onto a signal. I remember sitting there, staring at it,
kind of excited, thinking, all right, here we go, it's about to work. But then something didn't add up.
I realized the fox tellbox in the lounge wasn't even turned on. So how the hell was I getting a signal?
At first, I brushed it off and thought maybe I'd accidentally picked up some random channel.
The picture kept fuzzing, and slowly it cleared up. And when it did, I froze.
My stomach dropped because what came into focus wasn't a TV show or a movie.
It was a bed, just a bed, a plain-looking bed with sheets and pillows.
I snapped a photo of it to show my friend later because I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
For a split second, I thought it was my bed, and that freaked me the hell out.
My brain instantly flashed back to this horror movie I'd watched recently, Saw 2.
There's this scene where a character turns on the TV and reads,
realizes it's actually a live camera feed of her own apartment. That's exactly what it felt like in that
moment. My skin went cold and my heart started racing. I bolted upstairs, completely freaked out and
found my sister. I told her, you've got to come see this right now. She looked at me like I
was being dramatic, but followed me down anyway. We sat in my room together, staring at the screen.
And then we both realized, it wasn't my bed. It wasn't her bed either. It wasn't her bed either. It
wasn't anything we recognized, which made it even creepier. Whose bed were we watching? We were baffled.
The only explanation was that the AV receiver had picked up someone else's signal, but we had no clue who or why.
My sister and I sat in this weird mix of curiosity and fear. Like we wanted to know more, but at the same
time it felt wrong, like we were spying on someone without their knowledge.
Later that day, when my parents got home, we told them about it.
My dad checked it out, and after a bit of deduction, we all figured it must belong to one of our neighbors.
The signal probably wasn't traveling far, so it had to be nearby.
We tossed around theories, trying to make sense of it.
Maybe it was some kind of fidelity thing, like one of them had set up a hidden camera to catch their partner cheating.
Or maybe it was something kinkier, like they recorded themselves during...

sex. We even joked about darker stuff, like maybe the neighbor was secretly a serial killer who recorded his crimes.
We laughed nervously, but underneath it all, there was a genuine unease.
For the next week, we kept checking the signal. At first, it was thrilling, like some weird reality show we weren't supposed to have access to.
We watched a few times waiting for something to happen. But after a few days, the novelty wore off.
it started to feel icky, like we were intruding on someone's private life. So we stopped paying as much
attention to it until one afternoon everything changed. Our neighbors had been doing renovations on their house
for over a month, so there were always workers coming and going. One day, we turned on the signal,
just out of habit, and saw a man walk into the room. At first, we didn't think much of it. Renovation workers
were always around. But then we realized it was the plumber who had been
working there frequently. We watched as he casually walked into the bedroom and started rummaging
through drawers. That was strange enough, but then he did something that made our blood run cold.
He slowly turned, walked over to the camera, and looked directly into the lens, right down
the barrel. And I swear to this day, it felt like he knew we were watching. His eyes were locked
in and my whole body tensed. My mom freaked out, thinking he could see us too.
She immediately called my dad at work. I kept staring at the screen, my heart racing, trying to figure out if he actually knew.
Then the guy fiddled with the camera, adjusted it, and set it back down. That's when it hit me.
He wasn't being filmed by someone else. He was the one who would put the camera there.
When my dad got home, the plumber had already left. My mom didn't even want to get involved, but my dad insisted we had to tell the neighbors.
So he walked over, knocked on their door, and explained what we'd seen.
At first, they had no idea what he was talking about, but they let him come upstairs to their
bedroom to check.
Sure enough, hidden behind a water monitoring device in the wall was a tiny camera.
Apparently, this was normal equipment at the time, because Brisbane had been hit with
a drought and water restrictions, but the plumber had modified it and installed a hidden camera
facing the bed.
The neighbors were horrified.
They called the police immediately and an investigation.
was opened. For the next week, we didn't hear much, but the whole situation left my entire
family on edge. At night, I'd lay in bed and wonder if there were hidden cameras in our house, too.
Rationally, I knew it was unlikely, but the thought wouldn't leave my mind. My sister was jumpy,
my mom couldn't sleep properly, and even my dad seemed rattled, despite trying to act tough.
After a couple of weeks, my mom was talking to the wife next door, who updated her on what
it happened. The police discovered that the plumber had this whole setup. At night, he would drive
back to our street, park his car a few houses down, and sit inside with his laptop, watching the
live feed from the hidden camera. He had tinted windows so nobody could see in. He just sat there,
night after night, spying on their bedroom. When my mom told me this, I felt the biggest wave of shivers
down my spine. Because here's the thing. I remembered multiple nights when I came home late,
either from my girlfriend's house or after drinking with friends, and I always saw a station wagon
parked down the street. It was always in the same spot, maybe 30 meters from our house. I'd walk
past it, sometimes even glance at my own reflection in the windows, completely unaware that someone was
inside. And now, knowing it had been that creepy plumber sitting there in the dark, watching his
laptop, it made me sick to my stomach. To this day, I still get chills thinking about it. The whole
experience was like something straight out of a horror movie, except it was real. We'd stumbled
onto it completely by accident, just trying to set up a TV connection, and instead, we uncovered
this twisted little secret happening right next door. Even now, years later, me and my friends
laugh about parts of it. We joke about how lucky we were that when the picture fuzzed in that
first time, it wasn't our own bedroom on the screen. Or how terrifying it would have been if one night
we turned it on and the plumber's face was right up close, in clown makeup, waving at us with a knife in his hand.
Those were the kinds of jokes we made to cope with how unsettling it all really was.
But underneath the humor, there's still that lingering truth.
Sometimes the scariest things don't happen in haunted houses or dark alleys.
Sometimes they happen right next door, in the middle of an ordinary neighborhood when you least expect it.
And once you've seen that darkness, you can never quite shake.
it. That's my story. 100% true, and it still creeps me out to this day. The end.
