The tragic story of Roxanna Vargas and the fall of Edmundo Churinos.
When people in Venezuela first heard about the case of Roxana Vargas, a young 19-year-old
journalism student who disappeared one afternoon and was later found dead, her body covered
in bruises, the shock was immediate.
Her family didn't hesitate when it came to pointing fingers.
They were convinced they knew who was behind this terrible crime, her former psychiatrist,
Dr. Edmundo Churinos.
And here's the thing, this wasn't just any random accusation.
Chorinos was a big name in Venezuela.
He wasn't some back-alley doctor or an unknown psychiatrist,
he was a man with a long resume, a respected professional, even a public figure.
He had been the psychiatrist for political leaders, for celebrities, for important people in society.
That's why when he was accused, the whole country turned its head.
In an interview, Chorinos answered the accusations with a level of arrogance that left people stunned.
He basically said,
Why would they link the death of a girl with me just because she was my patient?
Plenty of my patients have died, some of them even murdered.
So does that mean every time one of them dies, my name has to be dragged into the press?
It's ridiculous.
He said this with zero remorse, no emerald.
No sadness in his tone, just cold detachment.
But as time went on, more and more secrets about Chorinos began to leak out.
And let me tell you, the truth was worse than anyone expected.
Who was Roxanna Vargas?
To understand the story, you need to know who Roxana was.
Roxanna was born in 1988, in Viad de la Pasqua, a city in the Guarico State, in the eastern region.
in the eastern region of Venezuela. She was the youngest daughter of the Vargas-Kintero family.
Her parents, both insurance brokers, already had an older daughter, Mariana. Now, here's something
important. When Roxana was born, her mom, Anna Teresa, went through postpartum depression. It hit her
really hard, so she decided to leave her job in order to recover and dedicate herself completely to
raising her daughters. Eventually, Roxana's father also left the insurance business and turned to
small-scale commerce to support the household. Despite the ups and downs, the family was tight-knit.
Roxanna and her sister grew up in a loving environment where responsibility and solidarity were
highly valued. But like many Venezuelan families, they also faced financial struggles.
At one point, Anna Teresa even started a small food business, selling meals right outside their home to help make ends meet.
As Roxanna grew into her teenage years, she stood out for her personality.
She was described as kind, extroverted, charismatic, stubborn, affectionate, determined, a loyal friend, and above all, someone who valued justice.
She wasn't afraid to speak her mind.
At the same time, she started to deal with some physical insecurities.
Roxanna gained some weight during adolescence, but she seemed comfortable with herself.
She would joke about it, dress how she liked, and project confidence.
Her dream was clear, she wanted to become a journalist.
She begged her parents to let her study communications at a university.
Even though money was tight, her parents agreed, on one condition.
she had to take her studies seriously.
A new life in Caracas.
And so, Roxanna packed her bags and left for Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.
She moved in with her grandmother to begin her studies in social communication at a private university.
For Roxana, the big city was a mix of excitement and nerves.
But she adapted quickly.
She made friends with ease, stood out in her classroom.
classes, and soon became known as one of the brightest students in her program. Her performance was so good that she even earned a scholarship covering her tuition.
Life seemed promising. She was living the dream she'd always wanted. But beneath the surface, crack started to appear.
Roxanna's silent struggles. See, Roxanna had this tendency to fall in love quickly, but her crushes never seemed to work out.
She wasn't reciprocated, and those experiences chipped away at her self-esteem.
By 2007, she was emotionally shaken.
She began blaming her lack of luck in love on her weight.
Slowly, she changed the way she dressed, hiding her body in baggy clothes and oversized sweaters.
She often said things like, Nobody's ever going to love me, and her sadness deepened.
At one point, Roxanna even started self-harming, cutting herself with sharp objects.
It was a cry for help, though few people noticed at first.
Around this time, she moved into an apartment with her sister Mariana, who was studying
audiovisual sciences and photography.
Mariana, being very close to Roxanna, noticed the changes.
Her sister seemed down all the time, withdrawn.
One day, Mariana saw a cut on Roxanna's arm.
Roxanna gave an excuse, but when family members later noticed more marks and heard a different explanation,
Mariana knew something was really wrong.
Eventually, Roxanna opened up to her sister.
She confessed that she felt terribly alone, that she believed no man would ever want her,
and that these thoughts were consuming her.
Mariana immediately told their mother, Anna Teresa, who was shocked.
She quickly spoke with her husband, and together they decided to seek professional help for Roxanna.
And who better than the psychiatrist who had once helped Anna Teresa herself through postpartum depression?
That man was Dr. Edmundo Chorinos.
The trusted doctor.
At this point, you need to understand who Chorinos was.
was in Venezuelan society.
Edmundo Chorinos wasn't just another psychiatrist.
He was a man with decades of experience, respected in academia, and politically connected.
He had treated former presidents of Venezuela.
His name carried weight.
For a family looking for help, he seemed like the safest bet.
So, Anna Teresa, full of hope, traveled to Caracas to rescue her daughter.
She believed that with Chorinos guidance, Roxana would recover, just like she herself once did.
But what nobody knew at the time was that Chorinos had a dark, hidden side, one that prayed on vulnerable young women who came to him for help.
Roxanna's voice in the shadows.
It's important to mention that Roxanna didn't stay completely silent about her pain.
She had created a personal blog under the nickname Rock's Brigida, where she put her.
poured out her emotions. Through that space, she shared her struggles, her insecurities,
and her feelings of loneliness. It was raw, personal, and heartbreaking. She also once
sent her mother a letter filled with heavy words that showed how much she was hurting inside.
But even with those signals, the family still believed professional therapy was the solution.
Nobody could have guessed that the person they trusted most would end up being the very same
man accused of betraying that trust in the worst possible way.
And then, the tragedy.
Not long after starting therapy with Chorinos, Roxana's life took a devastating turn.
She disappeared, and later her body was found lifeless, covered in bruises.
The Vargas family immediately suspected Chorinos.
They had no doubt in their minds that this man, this doctor who was supposed to heal, was
involved. The media went wild. The case of a murdered young journalism student tied to one of the
country's most famous psychiatrists became a national obsession. And while Chorino's smugly denied
everything, evidence began piling up. The once highly respected doctor's reputation started to crumble
as survivors and witnesses began speaking out about his disturbing behavior with patients. The facade of
the prestigious psychiatrist was gone. What was left was the horrifying reality of a predator
hiding in plain sight. To be continued. This is only the beginning of Roxana's story and the
eventual downfall of Edmundo Chorinos. Her case not only exposed one man but also shook
Venezuelan society, raising questions about power, trust, and the way vulnerable people are
often failed by those meant to protect them.
To be continued.
