Starting point is 00:00:00 Horror. Turn off the lights. The story of Lori and Gary. Okay, so before we dive into this, let's do this right. Turn off all the lights. Make sure your doors are locked, maybe light a candle if you're into that spooky vibe and just settle in. Because what I'm about to tell you isn't just a story. It's the kind of thing that sticks in your head, the kind of thing that crawls into your dreams and lingers there. Consider this your warm welcome to a brand new nightmare. All right, let's roll. Our story begins way back in 1989. Picture it. The hair was big, the music was loud, neon colors were everywhere, and in the middle of all that chaos lived a woman named Lori Nelano. Lori wasn't just any woman. She was a mom of two kids, trying to
Starting point is 00:00:56 to figure out what the next chapter of her life was supposed to look like. See, Lori had just signed the divorce papers with her husband. It wasn't one of those screaming, throwing plates kind of divorces you see in movies. No, this one was pretty calm, almost polite. They both agreed it was for the best, and Lori kept custody of the kids. That part was super important to her. Her children were her entire world. Now, here's something you need to know about Lori. type to bounce from relationship to relationship. She'd been with her husband for years, and she honestly thought he was going to be her one and only. So, once that chapter ended, she made a decision, no more relationships for a while. She wanted to start fresh, she wanted to figure out who she was
Starting point is 00:01:45 without a man next to her. She wanted to focus on loving herself, on being the best mom she could possibly be, and on building a stable life for her kids. But fate, or maybe bad luck had other plans. Because just 10 months after that divorce, someone knew walked into her life, and that someone was about to change everything. It started at her kid's school. You know how schools are right,
Starting point is 00:02:13 always new staff coming and going. One morning, Lori noticed a new face on campus, the school's new gardener. His name was Gary Carl Simmons, and at first glance he was, well, kind of purport. He wasn't one of those guys that gave you the creeps or seemed too good to be true. No, Gary came across as friendly, approachable, and downright charming. He had this way of talking to people,
Starting point is 00:02:39 always polite, always respectful. Kids loved him too. He was funny, attentive, and every morning he would bring flowers to Lori's youngest daughter. Not in a weird way. At least that's how it seemed at the time. It looked thoughtful, sweet even. So, of course, Lori didn't see a reason to be suspicious. One morning, Gary casually invited Lori out for breakfast, not dinner, not a romantic candlelit date, just breakfast, something casual, light, almost spontaneous. She didn't feel like he was hitting on her, so she thought, why not? That little breakfast was the start of something much bigger. What started as once a week meetups quickly turned into every few days, then every single day. Before Lori knew it, she wasn't just having coffee with this guy, she was in a full-blown relationship.
Starting point is 00:03:33 Gary wasn't just some random gardener either. He had a whole story. Born on November 18, 1962, he'd never been married, never had kids, but he always said he wanted a family. He told Lori he wanted a home, a place where he belonged and people to love him. He came across as deep, creative even. He liked reading, he liked writing, and he confessed that he wrote short stories. But here's the kicker. He was way too shy to show them to anyone. He never published them, never even let his closest friends read them. To Lori, that shyness seemed kind of sweet. She thought he was just a dreamer, an introvert with a big imagination. Fast forward a little, and the relationship moved fast, like really fast. On August 11th, 1990, just a year or so after meeting, Lori and Gary got married. It wasn't some giant fairy tale
Starting point is 00:04:30 wedding with hundreds of guests. Nope, it was a small, intimate ceremony, just close friends and family. After the wedding, they moved into what Lori thought was her dream home. It was this charming, one-story house in Moss Point, Missouri. It wasn't fancy, but it was perfect. The best part was the backyard, a huge garden with tons of space, and behind that, a dock that stretched into a swampy, almost magical-looking area with winding paths and water routes. Lorry fell in love with it instantly. From the outside looking in, their life seemed perfect. Lorry became a stay-at-home mom, taking care of the house and kids, while Gary worked and provided. for the family. He treated her well, or at least that's what it looked like. He was a tent.

To anyone watching, they were the picture of happiness. But here's where things start to get
Starting point is 00:06:29 off. Even though Gary seemed like the perfect husband, Lori started to notice cracks in the picture. She had questions, questions that Gary never seemed to want to answer. The biggest one, his stories. Remember how he said he loved writing? Well, Gary had a whole office in their house, and in that office were boxes stacked high, boxes filled with his writing. Lorry asked him over and over to share just one story with her, but he always refused. He'd blush, laugh it off, and say he was too embarrassed. Lorry thought it was odd, but she didn't push too hard. That is, until one day, Gary finally gave in. He told her she could read one. He opened his office door, let her in, and handed her a box of papers.
Starting point is 00:07:18 Then, while she sat down to read, he told her he was going out for a walk. Lori expected something sweet, maybe a love story, maybe some innocent fantasy tale. But the second she started reading, she realized she was dead wrong. What she found in those pages made her blood run cold. The stories weren't romantic or whimsical. They were dark, twisted, horrifying. Gary's fantasies weren't about love. They were about pain, control, and violence. The pages described graphic sexual scenarios filled with blood, torture, and terror. They talked
Starting point is 00:07:57 about kidnapping young women, tying them up, gagging them, and threatening them with knives. One story described forcing a woman to cut herself while trembling with fear. Another talked about locking a victim inside a box, keeping her hidden away, pulling her out whenever he wanted, treating her like a doll, a toy. And in some stories, after all the torture, the victim didn't even survive. And these weren't just a few scattered stories. There were boxes and boxes of this stuff, years of writing, pages upon pages, all filled with the same kind of nightmare fuel. By the time Gary came back from his walk, Lori didn't even know. know what to say. She looked at him, stunned, and asked him about it. His response? He brushed it off,
Starting point is 00:08:46 said they were just fantasies, just stories, nothing more. He insisted she had nothing to worry about. And you know what? Against her better judgment, Lori believed him. But things didn't stay calm for long. After Lori gave birth to their baby, the doctor told her she needed time to recover. No sex, no physical intimacy, she needed to heal. Gary did not take that well. He grew distant, cold, and tense. He kept pressuring her, ignoring what the doctor had said. Lory kept saying no, reminding him she wasn't ready. But one night, Gary stopped asking. That night, Gary crossed a line that no husband should ever cross. He assaulted her. Lorry said no, she resisted. She begged him to stop, but he didn't listen. When it was over, she was in shock, frozen, unable to process what
Starting point is 00:09:43 had just happened. And the next morning, Gary acted like nothing happened, like he hadn't done anything at all. He went back to being sweet, caring, the perfect husband and dad. And the worst part, it happened again. And each time it got worse. One day, Lori heard a loud thud coming from the kitchen. She walked in to find Gary struggling to carry in a huge wooden box. It was massive, heavy, and instantly recognizable. It looked exactly like the box he'd described in his stories, the one he'd fantasized about locking a woman inside. Her stomach dropped. She asked him what it was for, demanding answers. But Gary stayed silent. He just stared at her, his face expressionless. The silence...

She yelled, screamed, demanded to know the truth. And then, without warning, Gary snapped. He lunged at her, grabbed her by the throat, and began to strangle her. The last thing Lori remembered was the world fading to black as she lost consciousness. And that is where we leave off.
