Starting point is 00:00:00 Horror. Part 2. The Nightmare Unfolds. All right. Where were we? Right. The last thing Lori remembered before slipping into darkness was Gary's hands crushing her throat and then blackness. When her eyes finally fluttered open, she wasn't free, she wasn't safe, she was tied down. Imagine waking up and realizing your arms and legs are bound, your body aching, your throat raw from being strangled, and the very person you should be able to trust with your life is standing right there, looming over you. That's what Lori faced. She blinked, disoriented, the ropes biting into her skin. And then it hit her, one of Gary's stories. See, months earlier, she had read one of his disturbing little fantasies. In it, he wrote about tying a woman down,
Starting point is 00:00:56 blindfolding her, holding a knife to her face, and waiting, waiting for her to panic, waiting for her to thrash and scream. The cruel twist in the story was that the woman would end up cutting herself, all because she couldn't stay still. Gary didn't just write these things as casual ideas. He crafted them in detail, as if he was rehearsing for a play he planned to perform one day. And now, Lori was center stage. Gary leaned over and with slow, deliberate movements, tied a blindfold around her eyes. She couldn't see him anymore, but she could feel him. She could hear his footsteps circling the bed, the floorboards creaking under his weight as he walked around and around like a predator toying with its prey. Then, cold steel kissed her cheek,
Starting point is 00:01:51 the edge of a blade. Her heart pounded so loud she swore he could hear it. She knew exactly what he was waiting for. He wanted her to squirm, to jerk away in fear, to cut herself. But Laurie wasn't going to play his game. Because she remembered, she knew the story, she knew the trap. So she stayed completely still, not a twitch, not a flinch. Her breathing slowed, her muscles rigid, her face.
Starting point is 00:02:22 frozen like a mask. One minute passed, then two. Gary waited, but she didn't move. Finally, his patience ran out. With a frustrated sigh, he pulled back. Maybe he thought he'd broken her spirit. Maybe he thought she was too scared to resist. Whatever the reason, he untied her, dropped the act, and left the room. And in that moment, Lori made a decision. It was over. She wasn't going to live like this anymore. The very next chance she got, without telling Gary, she sought out an attorney. She wanted a divorce. She wanted out of that house.
Starting point is 00:03:04 Most of all, she wanted to protect her children. But Missouri had a law at the time that turned her nightmare into something even worse. Back then, a woman couldn't legally divorce her husband if she was pregnant. And Lori's attorney hit her with that news like a hammer to the chest. Lori insisted she wasn't pregnant. She said it over and over. But just to be safe, the attorney suggested a test, and when the results came back, her stomach dropped. She was pregnant. Nine months. That's how long she would have to wait before she could legally separate herself from the monster she'd married. Nine months of living in constant fear, knowing he could snap at any moment, knowing every day could be her. her last. She couldn't risk it. So Lori reached out for help. She contacted an organization for victims of domestic violence, and with their support, she did the unthinkable. She escaped. By July 1996, she and her children were gone. She found a new apartment in a secure location,
Starting point is 00:04:15 managed to get a job, and began rebuilding her life. She was a single mom again, yes, but she wasn't completely alone. Her younger brother, Timothy Milano, stepped up in a big way. He became her rock. He visited her daily, helped with the kids, ran errands, carried groceries. Timothy wasn't just her brother. He was her shield. But Lori knew one thing with bone-deep certainty. Gary wasn't finished. He was clever, too clever. He was manipulative, unpredictable, and he had an obsession with control. Lori knew in her gut that it was only a matter of time before he found her, and she was right. On August 12th, at exactly 11 p.m., the doorbell rang. Lori's blood ran cold. She already knew. It was Gary. Timothy, protective as always, squared his shoulders, took a deep breath and opened the door.
Starting point is 00:05:16 There he was. Gary, standing like a shadow from her past, eyes fixed. Exxed, expression unreadable. Gary demanded to see Lori. Timothy wasn't having it. He blocked the doorway, his body tense like a wall between them. You're not coming in, he told him firmly. But Gary didn't back down. He argued, pleaded, insisted he just needed to talk to her. Eventually, Timothy stepped outside to talk with him, shutting the door behind him. The minutes ticked by. Five minutes later, he cracked the door open again. His face looked strange. He told Lori that Gary...

Said he was going to Gary's place in Moss Point, but he'd be back in about an hour. Don't worry, he told her. It's nothing. I'll be fine. And then he laughed. But that hour stretched on. By 3 a.m., Timothy still hadn't returned. Lori was pacing the apartment. Her nerves shredded. She tried to call Gary's
Starting point is 00:07:20 house. The first call went to voicemail. The second time, it rang and rang, but no answer. By the third attempt, the line just stayed open. Gary didn't hang up. He didn't speak. He just let the silence hang there, heavy and menacing. Lori knew something terrible was happening. She thought about calling the police, but part of her also knew how easily Gary could twist things, how manipulative he was. so she waited. Finally, Timothy came back. But he wasn't the same. He was pale, trembling, his eyes hollow. He confessed to Lori that Gary had forced him to do something horrible, something so awful he couldn't even bring himself to say the words. Gary had threatened him, said that if he didn't cooperate, he'd kill Lori and the children. Timothy begged her to call
Starting point is 00:08:16 the police, and when they arrived, he surrendered. himself immediately. Two days later, on August 14th, Lori went to work, trying to cling to some sense of normalcy despite the chaos swirling around her life. But when she opened her locker, she found a package sitting there. No name, no note. Inside was a videotape. Curiosity and dread tangled in her chest as she slid it into a player. The screen flickered, and there he was, Gary. He sat in front of the camera, eyes locked on the lens, and began to talk. He admitted to doing something bad, though he danced around the details. It wasn't a full confession, more like a half truth meant to dangle over her like a curse. At the end, he stood up abruptly and cut the
Starting point is 00:09:08 recording. And just hours later, Gary himself walked into a police station near Lori's job. This time, he confessed. And what he admitted to was beyond anything Lori could have prepared for. Because the nightmare wasn't just about her anymore. It stretched back in time to someone else's tragedy. To understand the full horror, we have to rewind. Back to November 29, 1974, the day a boy named Jeffrey Lee Wolf was born. Jeffrey was raised by April and Pascal Lee Wolf, and from the very beginning, they adored him. They always said he was the kind of son every parent dreams about, hardworking, honest, animal-loving, passionate about football and motorcycles. By the time he was 21, Jeffrey was thriving. He traveled all over the United States, picking up jobs wherever he could find them. Painting, construction, carpentry, he wasn't picky. If there was work, he was working. If there was work,
Starting point is 00:10:13 At work, Jeffrey was there, sleeves rolled up, ready to go. And something else about Jeffrey, he'd never had a girlfriend. He was focused on his life, his family, his future. But 1996 changed everything. That year, Jeffrey met Charlene Brooke, Lyser, an 18-year-old who turned his world upside down in just days. They met in early August, and within two days they were inseparable. It was one of those world wind romances, the kind where both people feel like destiny itself brought them together.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Jeffrey was so smitten that he introduced her to his family almost immediately. On August 11th, he brought Brooke to his parents' house. They barely stayed 10 minutes, long enough for Jeffrey to tell them she was his girlfriend. No long explanations, no small talk. He didn't want to give anyone time to question it. Two hours... He had some work there, needed to collect payment for a job, and figured they'd make a trip of it together. His parents saw how happy he was, and they didn't press. The next morning, Jeffrey packed up, picked Brooke up, and together they drove from Texas to Missouri. And here's where things start to align with Lori's nightmare. Because according to Brooke's account, the trip was great at first. The drive was smooth, they laughed, talked, felt young and alive. They even stopped to see a couple of
