I'm going to tell you the story of a girl named Jocelyn Lysel Nungary, though pretty much everyone
who loved her simply called her Yosi.
And trust me, the sweetness in that nickname fit her perfectly, which is exactly why what happened
to her hit so many people like a punch straight to the chest.
These were the last known images of her alive, a 12-year-old kid walking next to two men who,
just minutes later, would end her life in a way that nobody around her could have ever imagined.
What began as one of those impulsive, naive teenage sneaks, something countless kids have done
behind their parents' backs, spiraled into a tragedy that not only devastated her family but
also ignited a whole national debate about illegal immigration, safety, and whether the system
was failing the very people it was supposed to protect.
But before all of that, before the headlines, the arguments, the fury, and the heartbreaking
footage that made its way across every social network, there was just her. A kid who came into
this world on December 27, 2011, in Texas, USA, just a couple of days after Christmas, as if
she were the universe's final little gift before the year wrapped up. She was the first daughter of
Alexis Nungeri, who had her at a very young age. The identity of the father wasn't something the
family talked about, and honestly, it wasn't something that mattered much within their home.
Alexis was still practically a kid herself, but she embraced motherhood with an excitement that surprised even her.
She would glow whenever she talked about her daughter, calling her gorgeous, affectionate, and gifted with a contagious sense of humor that could light up even the dullest room.
Everyone who met Yossi said the same thing, she radiated this strong spark, like she carried her own sunshine around.
She was confident, full of life, full of this unstoppable determination that you'd
don't usually see in someone so young. She loved to smile, one of those big, warm smiles that
make you think everything in the world is going to be okay just because that kid is smiling at you.
She loved people, loved animals, loved the world in general, pretty ironic considering how cruel
the world ended up being to her. She grew up in a very tight-knit household with two younger
siblings, her little sister Gabby, with whom she had a special, almost inseparable bond,
and the youngest brother, whose name the family kept private for safety reasons.
According to Gabby, her big sister wasn't just a sister, she was a role model, a little
guardian, a personal cheerleader, and the kind of kid who always, and I mean always,
encouraged her to be stronger, braver, and never let anyone mess with her.
Yossi paid attention to every little thing Gabby needed, protecting her from mean interactions, unfair moments or anything that could even slightly hurt her.
She stepped into the Big Sister role with a kind of natural grace that didn't come from obligation, but from love.
At school, she was the kind of student teachers adored.
Not just because she got good grades, though she did, but because she had this kindness that made people gravitate toward her.
Her classmates remember her as that one kid who was always checking on others, always trying to make sure no one felt left out.
During her elementary school years, she formed a super tight group of friends who shared her love for dancing, joking around, taking silly pictures, and making videos together.
If you were to scroll through her phone, you'd probably find hundreds of random clips, chaotic little dances, goofy faces, inside jokes, basically the digital scrapbook of a kid who took.
truly enjoyed being alive.
And as if that weren't enough, she also had a natural talent for music.
She played the cello in a small youth orchestra.
Imagine that, a 12-year-old balancing school, friends, her love for animals, and learning
a whole classical instrument.
Even though she was young and had about a million interests all fighting for space in her
brain, she somehow knew exactly what she wanted her future to look like.
She adored animals, every single one, from cats to dogs to whatever else crossed her path,
and she dreamed of opening shelters where she could rescue abandoned animals living on the streets.
That was her dream, not fame, not money, not being some influencer.
Just saving the creatures she felt deserved kindness.
Life, at that point, was simple, beautiful, peaceful,
or at least as peaceful as a household full of kids and pets can be.
But all of that changed in March 24 when the family decided to move from Conroe to North
Houston in Harris County, Texas.
It wasn't supposed to be anything dramatic, just a regular change of neighborhood,
something countless families do every year.
But that move, for reasons nobody could have predicted, became the turning point.
It was supposed to be a fresh start, but instead,
it set the stage for something that would destroy them.
For Yossi, the change was tough.
She had to leave behind her old school, her old friends, her familiar routine, and start all over again.
New place, new streets, new people, it's a lot for any kid, especially one who had built
such strong emotional ties to her previous environment.
Even so, Alexis hoped it would be a good move, a chapter filled with new possibilities.
But just three months after settling in, tragedy hit their door like an unexpected crash in the middle of the night.
It was Sunday night, June 16, 2024. A warm Texas night, just like any other. Around 10 p.m., Alexis and Yossi said goodnight to each other.
Alexis reminded her not to stay up too late, because the next morning she had to wake up early to go with her to work.
You know how moms say that in that, I love you but I'm tired voice.
Yossi agreed, like she always did.
At around 3 a.m., Alexis noticed that her daughter's cat was acting strange, meowing, restless, pacing around.
Normally, that cat slept right next to Yossi every single night.
Alexis figured Yosie was probably petting the cat or calming it down, maybe half asleep,
so she didn't think too much of it.
animals get jumpy at night all the time.
She went back to sleep, completely unaware that those little meows were the first sign that something terribly wrong was already happening.
And so the morning arrived, bringing with it the kind of silence that feels heavy instead of peaceful.
To be continued.
