Starting point is 00:00:00 Okay, so this is one of those stories you hear and think, no way this is real. But I swear on everything, it actually happened. It all started when one of my mom's old friends, let's call her Aunt Linda, came back to our country for the first time in, like, 15 years. She'd been living in the U.S. ever since she basically disappeared off the face of the earth. My mom was super excited, of course, because they used to be super close. But what none of us expected was how absolutely insane that visit would turn out. So Linda shows up, looking a little older, obviously, but still the same warm smile and calm voice.
Starting point is 00:00:41 They sit down, start chatting, catching up on life and all that. Everything seems pretty normal, right? A little later, two more of my mom's friends show up to hang out. Now, these two had never met Linda before, so it was like this casual meet-end grieve. situation. We were all just sitting around, sipping tea, swapping stories. But then things took a seriously weird turn. One of the friends, let's call her Rita, starts acting kind of, off. You know when someone's in the room but their minds clearly somewhere else. Yeah, that was Rita. She was staring at Linda a little too intensely, like she was trying to read her
Starting point is 00:01:23 soul or something. We all noticed it, but no one said anything at first. Then out of nowhere, Rita blurts out, can I ask you something? Please be honest. We all kind of froze. The room went quiet. You could tell something heavy was coming. Rita looks at Linda dead in the eye and says, do you come from a family of serial killers? I kid you not, jaws dropped. Everyone looked at each other like, what the actual hell did she just say? I mean, who asks something like that? Linda went pale, and it was like someone sucked all the air out of the room. But Rita just kept going, completely unfazed. Sorry, she said, I know that came out of nowhere, but I can see things about people. And I know you know what I'm talking about. You ran away 15 years ago
Starting point is 00:02:17 because your parents and your siblings have been killing people and burying the bodies in your house. When they told you to join them or die, you ran. You never went back, not even when your mom died, because they threatened to kill you if you ever returned. You could hear a pin drop. I remember my heartbeat was so loud in my ears I could barely hear anything else. Then, to top it all off, Rita starts describing Linda's family house in vivid detail. Like, scary detail. She explained exactly where the bodies were buried, under the basement, in the garden, even behind fake walls. Linda started crying, real tears.
Starting point is 00:02:59 Not the kind you fake when you're caught off guard, but the kind that come from being cracked open. She asked, How do you know all this? Rita just shrugged and said, I told you. I can see things about people. Then she kept going, like she wasn't just. just dropping nuclear level secrets. She said, you got married a year before you left, right? And then you found out your dad planned the whole thing.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Your husband was in on it too. That's why you divorced him. Now you've got two teenagers who are super close to their dad, and you're scared they'll turn out like him. Linda just nodded through the tears. And then Rita said something that gave me chills, you tried to report them once, but no one believed you. They called you crazy, and your whole family turned on you.
Starting point is 00:03:50 Even now, they don't know your back. You didn't tell anyone because you know if they find out, they'll come for you. Right at that point, my mom jumped in. Okay, that's enough, she said. Her tone was firm, like a parent scolding a kid, but even she looked freaked out. The topic changed quickly after that. We all tried to act normal, but the tension in the room was wild. I mean, how do you just go back to small talk after something like that?
Starting point is 00:04:21 Eventually, everyone left except for Linda. My mom sat down with her and asked, why didn't you ever tell me any of this? We've been friends forever. Linda looked so tired, like the weight of everything had finally caught up with her. Would you want to tell anyone something like that, she said. I've never told a soul. Not one person. I don't know how she knew.
Starting point is 00:04:46 She explained that her dad had recently died, but she hadn't spoken to any of her siblings since she left. She had no idea what they were doing now, whether they were still, you know, doing what they were doing. She said the scariest part was that her family always seemed like the sweetest people. The kind who donated to charity, helped neighbors, hosted dinner parties. No one would ever guess they were capable of murder. That's why she's always been suspicious of people who are overly friendly. She said it's like a mask. And here's the thing that really messes with you, we live in a country where the police won't do a damn thing.
Starting point is 00:05:26 They're either too scared, too lazy, or too corrupt to care. If something dangerous happens, they're the first ones to run. Seriously. I've seen them turn their backs on crime scenes like they were late for lunch. The only time they'll actually step in is if you've got money or political power. Otherwise, you're on your own. Sometimes, the police are even the ones committing the crimes. No joke.
Starting point is 00:05:54 There are entire neighborhoods that don't trust law enforcement at all. And honestly, can you blame them? Linda said she tried going to the authorities once, back when she first found out about her family. She brought photos, journals, everything she could use. to prove her story. But they laughed her out of the station, told her she was probably just emotional or mentally ill. That's when she knew she had to leave. She left behind everything, her home, her marriage, even her identity. She changed her name, moved across the globe, and never looked back. She said the fear never really left her, though. Every time she hears footsteps
Starting point is 00:06:36 behind her or sees an unknown number call her phone, she panics. It's been 15 years, but she still sleeps with a knife under her pillow. Just in case. Her kids don't know the full story. She told them their dad is just complicated, but she doesn't want to ruin their relationship with him. Still, she watches them carefully, always looking for signs that they might have inherited more than just his eyes. When she talks about her childhood, it's like listening to a horror movie. She said she remembers being little and thinking her family was just quirky. Her dad used to take long walks into the woods with random people who never came back. Her siblings were always sneaking around at night. And once, she swears she saw her mother
Starting point is 00:07:24 dragging something heavy wrapped in plastic across the floor. At the time, she thought it was just weird adult stuff. But now, looking back, it all makes sense. She said the break point was the night she overheard them talking about initiating her. They said it was time for her to become one of them. That she'd proven herself loyal and that it was time for her to participate. That night, she packed a bag and ran. She didn't even take much, just a few clothes, her passport, and whatever cash she had. She slept in bus stations for weeks until she managed to contact a friend in the U.S. who helped her get out. And as for Rita, the one who explored, exposed everything, no one knows how she knew. She claims she just sees things. But the details
Starting point is 00:08:14 she shared, it's hard to chalk that up to intuition. She knew stuff you couldn't Google, stuff that wasn't in any public records. She even mentioned a specific childhood nickname that only Linda's family used. It was downright creepy. After that day, we didn't see Rita again. She kind of vanished, which, honestly, just adds to the mystery. Linda stayed for another week or so, but she kept a low profile. Didn't go out much. Didn't talk to many people. When she finally left, she hugged my mom and said,
Starting point is 00:08:50 Thank you for not judging me. My mom just nodded. What do you even say to someone after a story like that? I think about Linda a lot now. I wonder if her kids will ever be ever. know the truth. I wonder if her family ever tried to find her. I wonder if the people buried under that house ever got justice, or if there's still just secrets hiding in the dirt. And every time I meet someone who's just a little too nice, I can't help but wonder what's behind the smile.
Starting point is 00:09:20 The end.
