The dark descent of Lisa Haram, love, control, and the illusion of safety.
When Lisa first agreed to move in with Simon Gidney, she wasn't making some life-changing romantic commitment.
At the time, it seemed like nothing more than a practical decision.
She needed a place to stay, and Simon had a spare room.
Simple, right?
Just two adults sharing an apartment until she found a more permanent place.
at first the arrangement felt surprisingly easy they got along well enough and their relationship was cordial
they weren't clashing over chores or bills and they treated each other with the kind of respect you'd expect from
casual roommates in fact lisa even joked to her mom joan that she thought simon might not even be
interested in women maybe he was more attracted to men that was how non-romantic the vibe felt in the
beginning. But within two months of living together, something shifted. Lisa was 28 at the time,
Simon 37. The friendship started blurring into something else. They began spending more time together,
talking late into the night, and before long, they slipped into a romantic relationship.
Lisa, being open and honest like she always was, didn't keep it a secret. She told her mom about Simon,
that things were going well. Still, she admitted she wasn't head over heels and love,
at least not yet. But relationships have a way of speeding up, and as the weeks passed,
they grew closer and closer. What started as casual companionship quickly escalated into something
serious. Before long, Lisa actually believed she had finally found her prince charming.
She started imagining a future with this man, the dinners together, the stability.
the idea of being cherished and loved.
For a woman who had spent years building a new life far from home,
that kind of security felt comforting.
But what Lisa didn't realize was that behind Simon's polished exterior
was a much darker personality.
He hadn't yet shown her the controlling, obsessive side of himself.
And by the time his true nature started surfacing,
Lisa was already emotionally invested.
The slow drift into isolation
Like many stories of controlling relationships, the red flags didn't appear all at once.
They crept in quietly, disguised as affection, disguised as care.
At first, Simon's need to know where Lisa was at all times seemed almost flattering.
He texted her constantly, asking what she was doing, who she was with, when she'd be home.
A lot of women might see that kind of attention as sweet at first, a sign of someone really.
really invested. Lisa thought so too, at least in the beginning. But Simon wasn't just
curious. He was keeping tabs. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, he began to cut her off from her
social circle. He discouraged her from going out with friends. He found ways to make her feel
guilty when she did. Little by little, Lisa became more isolated, spending more and more time
with him, until one day she realized she barely saw her friends at all.
It wasn't just about who she spent time with.
Simon also wanted control over her career.
The job at the salon.
Lisa genuinely loved her job at the hair and beauty salon.
It gave her independence, allowed her to be creative, and helped her stay connected with people.
But Simon didn't like it.
He insisted that she didn't.
belonged there, that she wasn't appreciated, that she should be aiming higher and surrounding
herself with a different kind of crowd.
In reality, he just didn't want her out in the world, interacting with others, living her own
life.
In June 2010, just before Lisa's 29th birthday, Simon began pushing hard for her to quit.
He tried to persuade her with all kinds of arguments, but Lisa resisted.
She wasn't ready to give up a job she truly enjoyed, and she didn't see why she should.
Simon didn't take that rejection well.
By August 2010, his frustration boiled over into a public scene.
He stormed into the salon where Lisa worked and created an embarrassing spectacle.
Imagine your boyfriend barging into your workplace, causing chaos in front of your coworkers and clients.
That was Lisa's reality.
It was humiliating, upsetting, and deeply inappropriate.
The incident left Lisa shaken.
Simon, realizing he may have gone too far, switched tactics.
He became apologetic, pulling out the classic manipulator's handbook, apologies, sweet words, promises it would never happen again.
He played the role of the repentant partner perfectly, and Lisa, wanting to believe him, gave him another chance.
A new apartment, a new trap.
By September 2010, the couple took another big step.
They moved into a luxurious apartment together.
And this wasn't just any place, it was on the 15th floor of a high-rise building in the heart of the city,
with huge floor-to-ceiling windows and a balcony that looked out over the sprawling green of Hyde Park.
It sounded like a dream.
From the outside, it looked like Lisa had built a glamorous light.
a stylish home with stunning views, a seemingly devoted partner, and the trappings of success.
But inside, the story was different. Lisa confided in her mother through text messages that she
missed her family and friends desperately. She admitted she felt like she had no real life anymore.
The loneliness was eating at her, even in the middle of all that luxury.
and the apartment itself, which should have been a sanctuary, quickly became a prison.
Surveillance and cyber control.
Without Lisa's consent, Simon installed a surveillance system inside the apartment.
Cameras, recording devices, a closed circuit setup that allowed him to track her every move.
It was invasive, controlling, and deeply unsettling.
Lisa may not have realized just how much he had.
was monitoring her, but the evidence would eventually become crucial.
Simon didn't stop there. He also went digital. Using spyware programs on her phone and computer,
he tracked her calls, her texts, her emails. He read through her private conversations,
deleted messages, erased emails, and even hacked into her social media accounts, deleting
friends from her contacts without her permission.
Lisa's online world, something that had always helped her stay connected to her loved ones back in Canada, was being dismantled, piece by piece.
Policing her appearance
Simon's obsession extended to Lisa's body, her clothing, even her makeup.
He dictated what she could wear, insisting on plain jackets and pants in black and white.
He didn't want her showing cleavage, didn't want her in heels, didn't want her to wear.
make-up. He demanded her hair be tied back, stripped of style, stripped of expression.
For a woman who had once embraced beauty, dance, and self-expression, this was devastating.
Lisa had built her identity around art, fashion, and presentation. Now, even that was being taken
from her. And when they did go out together, Simon avoided clubs and public spaces,
complaining that too many men paid attention to her.
Instead of feeling proud to have a beautiful, vibrant girlfriend,
he saw her as property, something to keep hidden away.
A climate of fear.
By this point, Lisa's life was governed by Simon's rules.
She lived under constant surveillance, both physical and digital.
Her job was gone, her friends had been pushed away,
her freedom stripped, her appearance dictated, her communication monitored.
What might have started as subtle red flags had now exploded into a full-blown climate of fear and dependency.
Lisa was trapped.
To be continued.
