Starting point is 00:00:00 The security camera of a small, low-profile hotel in the bustling center of Baranquia, Colombia, caught what would later be described as one of the most haunting videos connected to a local tragedy. The grainy recording showed 21-year-old Daniela Espidia Flores stepping through the doors with her ex-partner, Damar Eduardo Diaz Mendoza, the father of her two children. It looked like any ordinary moment, a young woman entering a building alongside someone she once loved. No one watching that screen could have guessed that these were the last living images of her, moments before an event that would leave a scar on her family, her community, and even the city itself.
Starting point is 00:00:39 This story is not just about what happened that night inside that hotel. It's about the long road that led Daniela there, the circumstances she grew up in, the complicated relationship she had with Damar, and the unanswered questions that remain hanging in the air long after her death. It's also about how people remember her, not only as a victim of violence but as the lively, caring, and vibrant young woman she always was. So, let's rewind, way back before that fateful evening, to the very beginning of Daniela's life. A Miracle Baby
Starting point is 00:01:14 Daniela Espidia Flores came into the world at the tail end of the 1990s, born in the lively Caribbean city of Baranquia. For those who've never been, Baranquia is a place full of rhythm, heat, and color, home to famous carnivals, busy streets, and the kind of loud, warm family culture that makes everyone feel connected. Daniela's arrival into that world, however, wasn't ordinary. In fact, her very birth was described by her family as a miracle. Her mother, Patricia Flores Paneda, already had three kids when she became pregnant with Daniela. But the pregnancy quickly turned into a nightmare. When Patricia was only four months along, doctors discovered something frightening,
Starting point is 00:02:01 the baby had become detached inside the womb. In medical terms, the chances of survival were almost non-existent. The medical team told Patricia to prepare for the worst. They believed Daniela's tiny heart would stop beating soon, and after that, they'd perform a surgical procedure to remove what they expected would be lifeless tissue. But that's not what happened. Against every prediction, the baby's heart kept beating. Week after week, scan after scan, Daniela clung to life.
Starting point is 00:02:35 Her mother and grandmother prayed constantly, and Patricia held on to hope even when doctors told her not to. Eventually, the medical staff shifted from hopelessness to determination, if this baby wanted to live so badly, they would do everything possible to help her survive. By the time Daniela was born, everyone in her family considered her nothing short of a miracle child. From the start, she carried that reputation, that she wasn't just another kid in the neighborhood, she was the one who wasn't supposed to exist but fought her way into the world. Growing up in Villa del Carmen
Starting point is 00:03:11 Daniela was the fourth of five children, raised primarily by Patricia, who played the role of both mother and father since the father's idea. was never made public. Their home was in Villa del Carmen, a modest but lively neighborhood where relatives lived close by. Her siblings included Eduardo and Eliana, whose names became known later in connection with the case, and two others who mostly stayed out of the public eye. Childhood and baronquia, like for many families living with economic limitations, wasn't easy, but it was rich in community ties. Daniela grew up surrounded by cousins, uncles, aunts, and especially her grandmother, who often looked after the children when Patricia had to work. There was always laughter in the house, even if money was tight.
Starting point is 00:04:01 Daniela's cheerful personality made her the center of attention during family gatherings. From the time she could walk, she loved dancing. Music flowed through her veins like electricity, and at every party or reunion, she'd be the first to jump up when the music started. salsa, champetta, reggaeton, it didn't matter. She could dance to everything. Her joy was infectious, and people would gather just to watch her perform her little routines. For a girl who almost didn't make it into the world, she sure knew how to live it fully. Another key figure in her life was her cousin, Abigail Lopez. The two were inseparable. They went to the same school,
Starting point is 00:04:46 shared secrets and built the kind of bond that often feels closer than sisters. In their teenage years, they developed little rituals together, straightening each other's hair, experimenting with makeup, painting their nails, and preparing for family events side by side. Those hours spent chatting and laughing in... Hi, I'm Darren Marler, host of the Weird Darkness podcast. I want to talk about the most important tool in my podcast belt. Starting point is 00:06:16 But life took a dramatic turn when Daniela was just 13. That was when she started a relationship with Damar Eduardo Diaz Mendoza, known to everyone as Damar. He was five years older than her, a detail that many people would later question, especially since she was still a child at the time. Their families had lived near each other for years, and the two had known each other since childhood. What began as neighborhood friendship slowly grew into something more intense. By the time Daniela was in her early teens, she and Damare were romantically involved. Her brother Eduardo would later explain that the closeness of their homes and the fact they grew up together naturally led to that connection.
Starting point is 00:06:59 To some outsiders, it looked innocent at first, two kids who'd known each other forever. But the truth was far more complicated. Despite her young age, the relationship escalated quickly. Within a few years, Daniela was married. to Damar and already a mother. Their first child, a son, was born before Daniela even turned 16. Soon after, they welcomed a daughter. Motherhood forced Daniela to grow up almost overnight. While her friends were worrying about schoolwork, dances, and makeup, she was worrying about feeding her baby, washing diapers, and keeping a household together.
Starting point is 00:07:40 yet through it all she held on to her naturally upbeat spirit family members recall that she continued to be generous caring and full of energy even when life demanded more from her than most young women could handle she planned surprises for birthdays organized little celebrations and showered her loved ones with small but thoughtful acts of kindness her two children and her mother became the center of her universe. She might not have had much money, but Daniela poured every ounce of herself into giving them love, stability, and whatever she could provide. Behind closed doors But while her social media posts and her public life projected happiness, the reality at home with Daymare was far darker. Family members would later testify that their relationship was
Starting point is 00:08:33 toxic from the start. De Maire, according to them, was violent, controlling, and impulsive. He was known to use illegal substances, which only made his temper worse. From early on, Daniela's relative suspected she was suffering abuse. There were whispers of arguments, bruises that didn't have convincing explanations, and long silences that hinted at something being wrong. Friends and family said he not only hurt her physically but also tormenting. her emotionally, making her feel trapped.
Starting point is 00:09:07 Several times, he allegedly threatened to kill her. These weren't empty words said in the heat of an argument, they were genuine threats that left Daniela terrified but also unsure how to escape. Being so young, financially dependent, and already tied to him through two children, she felt she had no way out. Despite the abuse, Daniela kept much of her pain hidden. She smiled at parties, took care of her kids, and kept up appearances. To outsiders, it often looked like she was holding everything together.
Starting point is 00:09:42 But those closest to her knew the storm she was living inside. The lead up to tragedy. By the time Daniela was 21, things between her and Damare had become unbearable. They were no longer together as a couple, but the bond of parenthood meant they still saw each other. That's where the danger truly lay. Even after the breakup, he couldn't let her go. His obsession grew sharper, more unstable, and more frightening. The events leading up to that night at the hotel remained partially unclear, but security
Starting point is 00:10:17 footage filled in some of the blanks. It showed Daniela arriving with Dame Air, calm but perhaps resigned, as if she had no choice but to go along with him. Some speculated she thought it would be a conversation, maybe even even. an attempt to reach an agreement about their children. Others believe she already knew he was dangerous but went because she felt trapped. What happened inside that hotel room has never been fully reconstructed, at least not publicly. What is certain is that Daniela never walked out alive. A community in shock. When news of her death broke, Baranquia was shaken.
Starting point is 00:10:57 Daniela wasn't just another statistic. She was a young... Hi, I'm Darren Marler. Host of the Weird Darkness podcast. She was the girl who lit up dance floors, the cousin who laughed for hours with Abigail, the daughter who spoiled her mother with little acts of love, the mother who adored her two children.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Her story exposed the silent suffering so many women endure behind closed doors, in relationships that outsiders can't see clearly. For those who knew her, grief was mixed with anger. anger that the signs of abuse hadn't been enough to save her, anger that her young life ended in such a senseless, violent way. Questions without answers The case left behind a storm of unanswered questions. Could her death have been prevented if authorities or family members had intervened sooner?
Starting point is 00:12:48 Did she ever truly believe she could escape Deemer's grip? And what about her children? What future awaited them now that their mother was gone and their father implicated in such a horrific act. What was captured on that security camera will forever stand as both evidence and a haunting reminder of the last hours of Daniela Espidia Flores's life. For her family, especially Patricia and Abigail, the recording is almost unbearable to watch, yet impossible to ignore. They choose instead to remember her not as the woman in the video walking toward tragedy, but as the miracle baby who danced, laughed, and loved fiercely.
