Shirley Turner had always been ambitious, focused, and a little restless, a combination that would define much of her adult life.
Back in the early 1980s, she was determined to pursue a career in medicine, but life had a way of throwing unexpected challenges at her.
At the time, Shirley was in a relationship that led to marriage during her winter break in 1981.
It was a young marriage, perhaps fueled by love but also by the expectations of starting a normal adult life.
On July 9, 1982, she gave birth to her first child, a boy.
While this was a joyous moment, Shirley quickly realized that she was not willing to put her academic and professional ambitions on hold for motherhood.
She and her husband agreed that he would stay home to take care of the baby while she continued her studies.
The idea seemed straightforward, but reality proved far more complicated.
juggling the responsibilities of motherhood while trying to pursue her studies was overwhelming.
By 1983, Shirley moved to the city of Labrador, seeking new opportunities.
She worked as a science teacher, trying to balance her passion for education with her parental duties.
Then, on March 8, 1985, she gave birth to her second child, a daughter.
That new chapter brought both happiness and stress.
The pressure of raising two children in trying to maintain a career and academic life created tension in her marriage.
Amidst these pressures, Shirley began an extramarital affair with a fisherman she had known years earlier.
The relationship with her first husband deteriorated, and by January 29, 1988, she divorced him.
Soon afterward, she married her former lover, and in 1990, they had a daughter together.
At that point, Shirley was the primary caregiver for three children.
Her second marriage, however, did not last long.
By 1991, her husband left the household.
Shirley, now alone with three kids, requested custody, which was granted.
Still, managing all three children by herself was overwhelming.
To make it manageable, she sent the youngest child to live with her ex-husband, who also helped care
for the other two children. This arrangement allowed Shirley to focus on continuing her studies.
In October 1993, a troubling incident arose. A man close to Shirley confided in her therapist
that he had witnessed Shirley physically and emotionally abusing two of her children. The therapist,
following mandatory reporting laws, alerted child protective services. Within days, social workers
interviewed the children, who confirmed that their mother had disciplined them with belts and
physical punishment. In contrast, Shirley's second husband later testified that she never
actually harmed the children and that the belt was only ever a threat. Despite the conflicting
testimonies, Shirley chose to send the two older children to live with their father and grandmother.
The child protection case officially closed on January 11, 1994, without an in-death follow-up, and Shirley
continued her life. She completed her undergraduate studies, enrolled in medical school,
and at that time was single, without children living with her, and seemingly free of immediate
personal obligations. But Shirley's life had a pattern of turbulent relationships. During her time
in medical school, she entered into a romantic affair with a resident who was 10 years younger
than her. According to his later accounts, Shirley initially seemed kind, supportive, and even
generous. But the relationship quickly became intense and conflict-ridden. The resident, seeking
a drama-free life, decided to end the affair. Shirley, however, did not accept the breakup.
She began repeatedly calling him, leaving threatening messages, and at times even physically
assaulting him. The harassment escalated to the point where he tried to avoid her entirely,
but Shirley would track him down. On one occasion, she followed.
him to his apartment. Standing at his doorstep, she wore a black dress and carried a bouquet of red
roses. Attached to her clothing were notes threatening to end her life. In an alarming act,
Shirley took a significant amount of over-the-counter medication, apparently attempting to overdose
in front of the residence apartment. She must have known she would be found in time, as emergency
services arrived quickly. She was transported to a hospital, where she received a gastroids,
stragg lavage. This episode revealed traits that would characterize Shirley for much of her later
life, she could be manipulative, dramatic, emotionally volatile, and potentially violent.
All of this, however, was unknown to Andrew Bagby when he first met Shirley in 1999.
By then, Andrew was in his third year of medical school at Memorial University in Newfoundland.
Their encounter was casual at first, but they quickly began spending time together.
Their relationship started informally, with neither appearing to seek a serious commitment initially.
Andrew's friends, however, were wary.
They noticed the nearly 13-year age gap and sensed the potential for complications.
Some were concerned about Shirley's past, even if Andrew remained unaware of the full extent
of her history.
Despite their reservations, Andrew was drawn to Shirley's energy, intelligence, and confidence.
The early months of their involvement were relatively low-key.
They spent time talking, studying together, and exploring Newfoundland's scenic landscapes.
Andrew was hard-working, focused on his medical studies, and ambitious about his future career.
Shirley's presence added excitement and emotional intensity, but it also introduced a level of complexity that Andrew was unprepared for.
As the relationship continued, subtle tensions began to emerge.
Shirley's assertive personality often clashed with Andrew's calm, logical demeanor.
While he tried to manage both his academic responsibilities and their relationship,
the intensity of Shirley's involvement sometimes felt overwhelming.
Friends noticed changes in Andrew, he was more distracted, occasionally anxious,
and increasingly invested in managing Shirley's moods.
Shirley, on the other hand, had a history of assertiveness and control in her relationships.
Her past, marked by complicated marriages, children, and episodes of emotional instability, set the stage for future conflicts.
These traits, while unknown to Andrew initially, slowly began to manifest in their interactions.
Andrew, like always, tried to approach the situation with kindness, empathy, and patience.
He continued to excel academically and socially, maintaining friendships and professional relationships.
But his personal life was becoming increasingly entangled, and the pressure of balancing love,
studies, and his future career weighed heavily on him.
Despite early red flags, Andrew remained optimistic.
He believed that with communication and mutual respect, they could navigate the challenges
together.
Yet friends and family, while supportive of Andrew, could not help but notice the potential
for volatility.
The age difference, Shirley's complex path.
and her emotional intensity all combined to create a scenario that required careful navigation,
something Andrew, young and trusting, was not fully equipped to manage.
By the end of 1999, Andrew's relationship with Shirley had deepened, yet it was clear to observers
that the connection carried risk. The same qualities that made Shirley charismatic,
her confidence, energy, and determination, also made her unpredictable.
Andrew's life, full of promise and achievement, now intersected with Shirley's turbulent past, setting the stage for challenges that would soon escalate beyond his control.
To be continued.
