Starting point is 00:00:00 When you look at relationships from the outside, it's easy to think you can predict how they'll turn out. Friends and family often see things the couple can't, little red flags or strange dynamics that hint at trouble down the line. That was exactly the case with Andrew and Shirley. From day one, people close to Andrew felt uneasy about the whole situation, and honestly, they had their reasons. First off, there was the age gap. Nearly 13 years' separate. separated them. That alone doesn't automatically mean disaster. Plenty of couples thrive despite big age differences, but in this particular case, the gap seemed to highlight just how different
Starting point is 00:00:41 their worlds were. Surely was a grown woman with plenty of life experience, and not all of it good. She had lived through complicated phases, made questionable choices, and carried a kind of energy that could either be read as confidence or manipulation, depending on who you asked. on the other hand, was the complete opposite. He was the kind of guy everyone described as good. Soft-spoken, kind, raised in a stable family, no history of surrounding himself with drama or problematic people. He was that wholesome type you picture when you think of someone who always did the right thing, the kind of son who never gave his parents a reason to worry, until he got involved with her. From the perspective of Andrew's family and friends, this mismatch
Starting point is 00:01:29 looked dangerous. They worried he was walking straight into something he didn't have the tools to handle. To them, it felt like he was at a serious disadvantage against the darker, more manipulative side of Shirley. She carried herself with a kind of sharpness, a malice, that just didn't sit right. Her behavior added to that impression. People noticed how she sometimes made comments that weren't just off color, but flat out inappropriate. At times she crossed it. At times she crossed into sexual innuendo that made others uncomfortable, and the vibe she gave off was simply, strange. They didn't like her, but at the same time, they made the conscious decision not to confront her openly. Why? Because they loved Andrew. He had been through enough heartbreak
Starting point is 00:02:17 already, and after his long relationship with his high school sweetheart ended, he hadn't dated anyone seriously. They didn't want to risk pushing him further into Shirley's arms by attacking her directly. Still, the unease remained. And as time went on, more unsettling details about her life came to light. Shirley managed to graduate from university in May of 2000. On paper, that was an accomplishment worth celebrating. But the way she had funded her education raised eyebrows. She later admitted to a relative that she had been dipping into a scholarship trust fund, since 1982, mind you. The fund had been intended to help send her kids to college someday.
Starting point is 00:03:03 Instead, she used the money to pay for her own living expenses and, eventually, her doctoral education. She tried to justify it, insisting that it was an investment. In her mind, once she finished her residency in medicine, she would be earning so much money that she could easily pay back the fund and secure her children's future. It sounded nice when she explained it, but anyone looking at the situation more critically would have seen it for what it was, she had drained the money and used it for herself, hoping the future would somehow work itself out. Meanwhile, Andrew's life was moving in a completely different direction. In the same year, 2000, he landed a surgical residency in New York City. That was a huge step, and so he packed up and moved to the city. Shirley, on the other hand, ended up in Iowa. The two of them tried to make the long-distance thing work, but it wasn't exactly smooth sailing.
Starting point is 00:04:03 According to Shirley, she traveled to see Andrew about seven times. Andrew, however, only made the trip once. That detail says a lot, if you think about it. It shows who was pushing harder to keep the relationship alive, and maybe, who was more invested. But things didn't really work out in New York for Andrew. He realized pretty quickly that the surgical path wasn't what he wanted. It didn't line up with his expectations, his interests, or maybe even his sense of fulfillment. So, in the fall of 2001, he transferred to Pennsylvania and started a family medicine residency.
Starting point is 00:04:44 This new environment fit him much better, he finally felt comfortable. Story during this same period took a darker turn. In October of 2001, for reasons nobody could clearly explain, she applied for and received a firearm permit. She purchased a Phoenix Arms HP22 pistol along with .22 caliber ammunition. Not only that, she started taking lessons to learn how to use it. This was completely out of the blue and, frankly, alarming when you look at it in hindsight. At the same time, her relationship with Andrew started spiraling. Her possessiveness ramped up to a level that shocked him. She began calling constantly, demanding to know where he was and who he was with. The behavior escalated to the point
Starting point is 00:05:34 that Andrew felt cornered. This wasn't the woman he thought he was dating, this was someone controlling, obsessive, and unpredictable. She even reached out to his parents, which was a unsettling. He had introduced her to them earlier, but the way she began contacting them felt intrusive, almost like she was trying to weave herself permanently into his life by whatever means necessary. Then came the bombshell. In a desperate attempt to keep Andrew's attention, Shirley told him she was pregnant. That's the kind of news that can completely change the trajectory of someone's life, and Andrew, being the responsible man he was, agreed to sit down with her and talk about it later.
Starting point is 00:06:17 But the truth behind her claim was far more twisted. At the end of that very month, October 2001, right after her last firearm training session, Shirley visited Andrew. The meeting went downhill almost immediately. They started arguing, and the tension was through the roof. Andrew had apparently been seeing another woman, or at least Shirley suspected he was, and she couldn't handle it. Finally, on November 3, 2001, Shirley admitted the truth, she had lied about the pregnancy.
Starting point is 00:06:53 It had been a manipulation tactic, a way to trap Andrew in the relationship. That confession was the breaking point. Andrew had had enough. He lost his temper, ended the relationship for good, and sent her packing back to Iowa. But Shirley wasn't the type to take rejection lightly. Less than 24 hours after the breakup, she completely unraveled. Fueled by rage, desperation, or maybe both, she began obsessively calling Andrew over and over. He never answered. Not once. When that didn't get her the reaction
Starting point is 00:07:31 she wanted, she made a chilling decision. She got into her car and drove 16 hours straight from Iowa to Pennsylvania, showing up in the dead of night on November 5, 2001. They had another confrontation at Andrew's home. It was heated, emotional, the kind of fight you can picture happening in a small living room with raised voices and clenched fists. Eventually, Andrew left for work, clearly frustrated. When he got there, he confided in his friend and colleague, Clark Simpson. Andrew told Clark about the breakup and how upset Shirley was. He made it clear he wasn't planning to get back with her, but he also said he felt obligated to see her again later that day, just to talk things through. Clark immediately told him that was a terrible idea.
Starting point is 00:08:22 He warned Andrew that being alone with her was risky, that she might lash out or even turn violent. Andrew listened but ultimately decided to go through with it. To calm his friend's nerves, he promised Clark that after meeting with Shirley, he would stop by Clark's place that evening. That was the last promise he ever made. That night, Clark waited. He expected to hear Andrew knock on his door, maybe walk and looking drained from the drama but safe.
Starting point is 00:08:53 Andrew never showed. Meanwhile, Shirley was driving back to Iowa. At some point, she left a voicemail on Andrew's answering machine, but he never picked up the call. The next morning, the nightmare became real. Andrew didn't show up for work. Clark immediately feared the worst. His gut told him surely had done something terrible, and unfortunately, he was right. Soon after, news broke that Andrew's body had been found in a state park in Pennsylvania.
Starting point is 00:09:27 He had been shot, killed in cold blood. That's where this twisted story leaves us, at least for now. The tangled mess of lies, manipulation, desperation, an obsession had ended in tragedy and as shocking as all of that sounds the story doesn't actually end here it only gets darker to be continued
