Obsession, the investigation into Rachel Barber's disappearance. The moment investigators sat down with Emmanuel, Rachel's boyfriend, the questions came
Starting point is 00:01:10 fast and heavy. They wanted to know everything about their relationship. The most awkward one came quickly, had you and Rachel been intimate? Emmanuel, only 16, shifted in his chair but decided to be truthful. Yes, he admitted. He didn't want to hide anything that could possibly help them find her. Then, almost defensively, he added, but we always use protection. Still, the officers weren't satisfied.
Starting point is 00:01:42 Their minds, for some reason, leaped to the idea that Rachel might have gotten pregnant. Maybe, they speculated, she was so overwhelmed with fear about disappointing her family that she decided to run away to another city. In their eyes, it wasn't a crime, it was just a teenager escaping the consequences of her own choices. When Michael and Elizabeth Barber heard this theory, they were furious, furious and insulted. They knew their daughter. Rachel wasn't the kind of girl to pack her bags and vanish over a secret like that. Their home was built on communication.
Starting point is 00:02:20 The Barbara family was open about everything, disagreements, feelings, even difficult topics like relationships. If Rachel were pregnant, she would have told them. She wouldn't have hidden it. But the police didn't seem to get that. They looked at Rachel as just another rebellious teenager. Michael and Elizabeth saw her as their daughter, a responsible, loving, thoughtful young woman who would never just disappear by choice. To them, it was crystal clear, something bad had happened. Losing faith in the police. The barber parents couldn't believe the dismissive attitude of the very people who were supposed to help them. The officers didn't just push the pregnancy theory, they also gave the barbers another warning, stopped trying to conduct their own
Starting point is 00:03:10 search. Without proper tools, you're not going to find her, the police told them. It was like being slapped in the face twice. First, their daughter was missing. Second, instead of helping, the authorities were treating them like meddling nuisances. But Michael and Elizabeth refused to give up. A witness comes forward. Not long after, some potential leads began trickling in. One of the most important came from one of Rachel's classmates at her dance academy. She pulled Elizabeth aside one afternoon and nervously admitted that she had seen Rachel on the very day she disappeared. The classmate explained that she had spotted Rachel at the train station, but she hadn't been alone. Beside her stood a woman. She described this woman in detail, older than Rachel,
Starting point is 00:04:06 overweight, messy in appearance. Someone who clearly didn't belong to their circle. The classmate was certain she had never seen her before. She wasn't part of the occasion. She wasn't part of the and she didn't look like the type who belonged there either. For Elizabeth, this description was both helpful and haunting. Who was this woman? Why was Rachel with her? And most importantly, where were they going? Knocking on closed doors. Fueled by this new information, Elizabeth hurried to Rachel's dance school.
Starting point is 00:04:43 She wanted answers. She explained the situation to the staff, desperate for help. If she could just get a list of the students and maybe some contacts, she might be able to identify this mystery woman. But instead of cooperation, she hit another wall. The school administrators shook their heads and told her no. They couldn't release that kind of information without police authorization. Rules, privacy policies, red tape, call it what you want, it was one more door slamming shut in Elizabeth's face. She left the academy feeling trapped.
Starting point is 00:05:21 Her daughter was missing, the police weren't doing enough, and now even Rachel's own school wasn't willing to share information. The helplessness was crushing. Back to the police. Still, Elizabeth didn't give up. She marched back to the station and relayed the crucial tip, Rachel had been seen with a woman at the train station. This time, to her surprise, the officers actually seemed interested.
Starting point is 00:05:50 They decided to dig into Rachel's phone records. Maybe, they thought, the mystery woman had been in contact with her. When they pulled up the call logs, one number stood out like a neon sign. It kept appearing over and over, long conversations, sometimes longer than Rachel even spent Inflation pushes up building costs, so it's important to review your home insurance cover to make sure you have the right cover for your needs. Starting point is 00:07:09 Talking to Emmanuel. And on the very day before Rachel disappeared, that number had called her three separate times. The police tracked it down. The caller wasn't a stranger at all. In fact, she was someone both Rachel and her family knew very well. Her name was Caroline Robertson. The babysitter. Years earlier, Caroline had worked as the Barber family's babysitter.
Starting point is 00:07:40 She had looked after Rachel and her sisters when they were just kids. To Elizabeth, the name sparked an instant memory, and a wave of unease. Because when she thought back to the classmates' description, the overweight, unkempt woman, it matched Caroline perfectly. The realization made Elizabeth's blood run cold. Would it really be Caroline? Why would she be hanging around Rachel? And why, after all these years, was she suddenly back in Rachel's life?
Starting point is 00:08:15 Following the trail. By March 12, the police were finally closing in. They decided to check Caroline's workplace, a call center where she worked as a teleoperator. But her co-workers told them she hadn't shown up in days. She had called in sick and disappeared from her normal routine. When investigators asked if she had ever mentioned a girl named Rachel, one of her colleagues gave a chilling answer, she talked about Rachel practically every day. That was all the confirmation the officers needed.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Caroline wasn't just a name in the call logs. She was obsessed. Knocking on Caroline's door. Next, they went straight to her home. They knocked. No answer. They tried again. Still nothing.
Starting point is 00:09:10 Curious, they peered through the windows, and what they saw made their stomachs drop. Caroline was lying on the floor, motionless. The officers forced their way inside. Caroline wasn't dead, but she was unconscious. They quickly called paramedics and had her rushed to the hospital. Meanwhile, the rest of the police team stayed behind to search her house. What they found inside would confirm every suspicion, and reveal just how Deep Caroline's obsession with Rachel truly ran.
Starting point is 00:09:45 Horrifying discoveries The house was a shrine. A shrine to Rachel. Photographs of the teenager were everywhere, far more than any. one outside the family should have had. There were documents, too, including a request for Rachel's birth certificate. As if Caroline had been trying to collect official papers, maybe to assume her identity. The officers also uncovered a handwritten list of personal information about the Barbara family, addresses, birthdays, little details that only someone close, or someone
Starting point is 00:10:21 disturbingly fixated, would bother to write down. Even more disturbing, they found tiny clothes. Outfits far too small to belong to Caroline. Clearly, they had been bought or collected for Rachel. And then came the notebook. In its pages, Caroline had poured out her twisted thoughts. She described Rachel as pure, perfect, beautiful, her skin flawless, her eyes mesmerizing. Then she wrote about herself, On the many days of Christmas, the Guinness Storehouse brings to thee. Starting point is 00:11:40 in chilling detail, Caroline had written out a plan. A step-by-step list on how to take Rachel's life. To be continued.
