Starting point is 00:00:00 The story of Titan, a dog, a fire, and a mystery. It all started with what was supposed to be a routine call. The police were dispatched after someone phoned in a report about an illegal vegetation burn. Nothing fancy, just the kind of complaint officers usually handle quickly, somebody torching brush in the wrong place at the wrong time. But when the patrol cars rolled up and the officers stepped out, they realized almost instantly that this wasn't going to be a normal night. Because what they saw wasn't just smoke and scorched grass.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Next to the flames, in the glow of that fire, there was, a leg. A human leg. What was burning wasn't a pile of weeds. It wasn't logs, trash, or brush. It was a person. A body burned so badly it was impossible to recognize. And just like that, what started at, as a, stop the illegal burn kind of job became a full-on homicide investigation.
Starting point is 00:01:06 The crazy part. The most important witness, the one who had actually been there, who had seen everything, was already at the crime scene when police arrived. The only problem, that witness couldn't talk. At least, not in words. Chapter 1 The Fire, the Noise, and the White Dog The officers had two jobs at once that night. On one hand, they had to contain the fire so it wouldn't spread. On the other, they had to be extremely careful not to destroy or contaminate potential evidence. The body was already badly burned, but there might still be clues in the surrounding area, footprints, tire marks, dropped items.
Starting point is 00:01:52 But there was something else making their work almost impossible, a dog. Not just any dog. A beautiful white pup, restless, desperate, running circles around the scene and refusing to leave. He barked non-stop, sharp and insistent, as if trying to make the humans understand something. The officers tried to catch him, but the little guy was fast and determined. No way he was letting himself be grabbed. He didn't want to run away either. He was rooted there, tied emotionally to the very spot.
Starting point is 00:02:27 where the flames had almost consumed someone. One cop swore later that the dog seemed to be trying to tell them something. At that point, they didn't know how right he might have been. Eventually, the forensic team arrived. They worked through the night, recovered the remains, and then left the sight taped off, dark and quiet again. But the story didn't stop there. Because the next morning, under the daylight, a good summary
Starting point is 00:02:57 Mariton happened to pass by that field. Guess who was still there? The dog. Same spot. Same stubborn loyalty. This time, though, he wasn't frantic. He was calmer, almost exhausted, and when the stranger approached, he allowed himself to be touched. The man did the right thing, he called animal control. When rescuers showed up, they decided. discovered something that would blow the whole case wide open. Chapter 2, Meet Titan. First, they confirmed the pup was male. Then they checked for a microchip.
Starting point is 00:03:41 Bingo. The scanner beeped, and the screen revealed not just numbers but a name, Titan. Titan wasn't astray. He wasn't some random street dog. He was registered, he was groomed, and he was very clearly someone's pet. In fact, his coat was spotless white, freshly trimmed, he looked like he'd just walked out of a groomer's appointment. And Titan wasn't just any mix. He was what people call a Labradoodle, half Labrador, half poodle. A designer dog, basically. Not the type you'd expect wandering
Starting point is 00:04:19 dirty fields for weeks. The chip said Titan's owner was a woman named Mandy Rose Reynolds. It included a phone number. So, investigators dialed it. No answer. They left a voicemail. A little later, Mandy called back. At first, she sounded thrilled. Her missing pup had been found. Relief in her voice, excitement that Titan was alive and safe. The detective played it cool, but he began asking questions, basic ones, designed to check whether she really was the owner. What breed is your dog? What color? Mandy answered, Labradoodle, white, named Titan. Correct on all counts. But as the conversation went on, things started to get, weird.
Starting point is 00:05:18 Chapter 3 The Geography Problem Mandy explained that she lived in San Marcos, Texas. She was currently heading toward Wichita, Kansas, for a family visit. Somewhere along the way, she said, Titan had slipped away. Here's the thing, Titan was found in Robinson, Texas. And if you look at a map, that makes no sense at all. Wichita is about an eight-hour drive north from Robinson. San Marcos is more than two hours.
Starting point is 00:05:51 in the opposite direction. So how, exactly, was Titan found in Robinson? Had he teleported? Hitched a ride. Jogged 200-plus kilometers overnight? The investigator, who knew the area well, couldn't wrap his head around it. A little dog-like Titan covering that kind of ground? Impossible. So he asked Mandy again, where exactly did he get loose?
Starting point is 00:06:21 Her first answer was Waco, a city closer to Robinson. Okay, that made slightly more sense. But even then, it would have been a long trek for a dog that's small, especially one that looked like he'd just stepped out of a pet salon. They pressed her further. Had she stayed in Waco overnight? Nope, she said. Which just added to the nonsense.
Starting point is 00:06:49 So where had Titan action? escaped from. Chapter 4, Mandy's shaky story. By now, Mandy's voice was trembling. She insisted she only wanted her dog back, but the detective kept digging. Finally, she admitted she had been on a road trip with her fiancé, Titan in the back seat. They were driving from San Marcos to Wichita so her fiancé could visit his sick grandmother. Somewhere during that journey, Titan got away.
Starting point is 00:07:23 Can we talk to your fiancé, the investigator asked. Mandy said no. Supposedly, he was already in Wichita. Wait a second. How could he already be there if they were supposed to be traveling together? The holes in her story kept multiplying. When asked to describe the exact gas station, where Titan supposedly escaped, Mandy couldn't.
Starting point is 00:07:51 She couldn't describe the area, couldn't give a clear landmark. What kind of car are you driving, they asked. A silver Toyota, she replied. What year? She had no idea. Then suddenly she claimed she was at work and couldn't keep talking. Her only demand was, give me back my dog. The whole story was a pile of contradictions.
Starting point is 00:08:23 Chapter 5, Breaking Down the Timeline The detective tried piecing together what Mandy had said. If her version were true, she would have had to. Leave San Marcos. Drive to Wichita, about ten hours. Drive back down, another ten. Lose Titan somewhere in between. search for him for hours. Return home in time for work. That's a minimum of 22 plus
Starting point is 00:08:58 hours of nonstop driving, plus hours of searching. All supposedly done within a single night. It just didn't add up. And remember, Titan looked spotless, perfectly groomed, freshly clipped. not like a dog that had been lost and wandering highways for days. Chapter 6, the second call. The police decided to give Mandy some time. An hour later, they rang her back. This time, they laid it out straight, the reason we're asking so many questions is because Titan was found near a dead body.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Mandy's reaction tears stress. She insisted she was only worried about her dog. They asked why her phone wasn't in her name. She said it was registered to her fiancé's grandfather. But when they pressed for the man's name, she froze. Then she said something chilling, I'm sorry about what happened, but please give me back Titan. And take me off your list of suspects. The investigator told her she was a a suspect. But in reality, her inconsistent answers and suspicious behavior meant exactly the
Starting point is 00:10:19 opposite. At that point, Mandy wasn't just Titans owner. She was now a central figure in a homicide investigation. And that's where the case really begins to spiral. To be continued.
