Starting point is 00:00:00 So earlier today, the Metropolitan Police's brand new commissioner, a guy called Eckhart Warner, decided to drop a verbal nuke during a press conference. And when I say nuke, I mean the type of statement that makes headlines scream and Twitter melt down. The man, straight-faced and calm as ever, told reporters, all black Nigerians should stop pretending their indigenous British and go back to their homeland. Yep. That's exactly what he said. And before anyone could process it, Warner doubled down with even more loaded comments. Britain is a white country, he declared. There's no reason for Nigerians to be here. It doesn't matter what work they do or how well they speak English, they should leave this country.
Starting point is 00:00:45 It's bizarre that people from a West African country are even here in the first place. The UK is not an ally of Nigeria, and Nigeria isn't an ally of the UK. If anything, both countries are mutual foes. I know, right? He really went there. And it didn't stop. Warner leaned into the microphone and added, there are a lot of Nigerians pretending to be British and passing themselves off as British. Then he went on a mini-rant about passports. They hand out British passports like candy these days. Nigerians, West Africans, they learn the lingo, pick up the slang, and then act like they've been here for generations. But we all know that's absolute rubbish.
Starting point is 00:01:29 Britain is a white country. My family's been here since 1066, just like a lot of other Brits who can trace their roots back to the 11th century. We're not about to start changing things for new arrivals from West Africa pretending their British through and through. And just when people thought they couldn't be more shocked, Warner dropped another twist. He admitted there was a possibility, some Nigerians and West Africans might have been abducted from Nigeria. In the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, Nigeria and other West African countries were doing pretty well economically, he said.
Starting point is 00:02:05 They had infrastructure, and there were hardly any shandy towns like you see today. Nigeria's economy was bigger than China's at one point. But then crimes skyrocketed. Foreign criminals wearing balaclavas would swoop into Nigeria and rob people at gunpoint, especially around airports. Home burglaries became common. Then kidnappings became the go-to-crime. Huge ransoms were demanded, and when people paid, Nigerians became poorer.
Starting point is 00:02:35 The criminals laundered the money and fled back to their countries. Now the Naira is severely devalued. I understand that some Nigerians might speak perfect English because, their kidnappers taught them, maybe to cover up the abduction or something. But let's be clear, they're not British. They're Nigerian. They should go back home, back to their homeland. And if anyone thinks they've been kidnapped or suspect someone else might be a kidnapped
Starting point is 00:03:03 victim, they should call 101 or crime stoppers. Then Warner's voice grew louder as he added this cryptic line, no one guesses they will die one day. They only think about having power and a chair to carry out craters. crime, and that was it. The press conference ended. The room was dead silent for a moment before reporters started shouting questions, but Warner walked out. The reaction online was instant and explosive. Social media platforms lit up like fireworks on bonfire night. Some people were furious, calling for Warner's resignation. Others praised him, saying he was, finally saying what
Starting point is 00:03:43 needed to be said. Let's break this down because there's a lot to unpack here. First off, Warner's claim that Britain is a white country isn't just historically simplistic, it's inflammatory. Britain has been a melting pot for centuries. From the Romans to the Vikings, from the Normans in 1066 to the waves of immigration from the Caribbean, South Asia, Africa, and beyond, Britain has always evolved. Now about Nigerians in the UK. Nigeria was once part of the British Empire. Millions of Nigerians speak English as their first language because of colonial history. Many came to Britain legally to study, work, and contribute to society. Some are second or third generation Brits. To suggest their pretending to be British ignores
Starting point is 00:04:32 reality. Then there's his comment about passports. It's true that immigration policies have shifted over the years, and yes, the UK has had debates about citizens. citizenship and national identity. But, handing out passports like candy. That's a stretch. Warner's story about kidnappings in Nigeria also deserve scrutiny. While crime and corruption have been issues in parts of West Africa, the idea that foreigners kidnapped Nigerians in droves and taught them English is, a wild claim. Most Nigerians speak English because it's their official language, not because of any bizarre abduction schemes. And that final line, no one guesses they will die one day. They only think about having power and a chair to carry out
Starting point is 00:05:19 crime. What does that even mean? Is he accusing Nigerians of coming to the UK to seize power? Or was it some cryptic philosophical jab? Whatever the case, Warner's comments have sparked a firestorm. Human rights groups are calling for investigations. Politicians from all sides are weighing in. The Prime Minister's office released a statement saying, these comments do not reflect the views of this government. But Warner's supporters aren't backing down. On forums and in pubs across the country, some people are saying, finally, someone standing up for Britain. The big question now is, will Warner keep his job? Or will the backlash be too much? One thing's for sure, this isn't the last we've heard about it.
Starting point is 00:06:07 The debate about identity, race, and who belongs, in Britain just got a whole lot louder. The end.
