All right, so let me tell you about one of the scariest nights of my life.
I swear I'm not the type to get caught up in dangerous situations.
Like, I'm usually super cautious.
I'll cross the street if someone looks even slightly sketchy,
and I've always got my headphones low enough to hear what's going on around me.
But sometimes, sometimes your brain just doesn't work right.
Either you're too excited, too nervous, or just not thinking straight.
And that night? Yeah, I was definitely not thinking straight. So here's what went down. It was me and my two
friends. For this story, let's call me K, and my friends S and L. The three of us were hanging out
downtown. We had just left the local bowling alley, and honestly, I was still buzzing from the game
because it had actually been one of the first times I'd hung out with L. Like, I knew S well enough,
we've been friends forever, but L. Not so much. So, I didn't really know what to expect from her.
Was she chill? Was she the type to get us into trouble? Spoiler, turns out she was a little more
unpredictable than I realized. Anyway, let me set the scene for you. We live in this small town,
tiny, really. There's probably less than 10,000 people here. You'd think that would make it all safe
and cozy, right?
Nope.
According to Google, yes, I googled it later like a paranoid little detective, our town has a
crime rate higher than 94% of all the cities and towns in the whole state.
Like, what kind of statistic is that?
That's not the vibe you want when you're wandering around as a teenager with no car.
So downtown wasn't exactly Disneyland, but there wasn't much else to do.
None of us felt like going to S's house yet, so we figured that.
we'd just wander around for a while and maybe pop into some shops. Eventually, we made our way to this
little gas station. It wasn't exactly in the safest part of town. Honestly, the closest place I even
remotely felt safe was our school, and that was still a good walk away. Plus, it was summer break,
so the place was completely deserted. No teachers. No staff. No random kids hanging around the parking
lot pretending to skateboard. Just empty. Anyway, we walk into the gas station, grab a couple of snacks,
and head to the counter to check out. But as we're paying, the cashier starts looking at us weird.
Not like, oh, look at those kids buying candy, weird, more like, why are you out here and who let you
leave the house, kind of weird. She keeps glancing at the door, then back at us, then around the store.
Finally, she leans in a little and asks if we walked there or if we had a parent with us.
I froze.
I didn't want to answer.
Like, what was I supposed to say?
But of course, Elle didn't hesitate.
She pipes up and says, yeah, we walked here.
Great.
Thanks, Elle.
The cashier's face immediately tenses.
She lowers her voice and says there's been reports of an active sex offender.
in the area. She tells us to be careful and maybe call someone to pick us up. And you know that feeling
when your stomach just drops? Like it's trying to escape out through your shoes. That was all three of us
right then. We left the gas station trying to act cool, but inside we were absolutely freaking out.
None of us had a car. None of us had any kind of plan. And now we knew there was some creep
roaming around. S quickly pulled out her phone and called her sister, our only hope for a ride.
Problem was, her sister didn't get off work until 8 o'clock or 8.15, and it was only like 7.20
at this point. We still had nearly an hour to kill. I should also probably mention that none of us
had any idea how to defend ourselves. Like, zero. If someone came up to us, our best bet was probably
to scream and run.
None of us were strong.
None of us had pepper spray.
And none of us were particularly fast either.
So when we saw this guy, clearly drunk or high, stumbling down the street toward us, we all went dead silent.
He didn't say anything to us, but the way he stared, ugh.
It was enough to make my skin crawl.
We didn't even breathe until he passed us completely.
After that, we decided we needed a better place to wait.
There was this jewelry shop a couple streets over with a bench outside.
Across from it was a small Mexican restaurant, and at least that area had a little more light.
We figured it'd be safer than standing in the middle of nowhere like sitting ducks.
So we made our way there, sat down, and tried to calm down while Eskept calling and texting her sister, begging her...

To hurry up.
We were sitting there talking quietly about what had just
happened when things went from bad to holy shit bad. Out of nowhere, this white truck started
creeping down the street. Not driving normally, creeping. Slow enough to make it obvious they were
watching us. As the truck passed, the driver stuck his head out the window, waved, and then,
oh my God, I swear to you he pulled out a gun. Just held it there like it was no big deal,
waving it around. We didn't even think. Instinct just took over.
All three of us screamed and bolted in different directions.
I ran one way, S and L ran another.
I don't remember if he fired or not.
Thank God I don't think he did, but my brain was so scrambled I couldn't process anything except run.
I ended up on the opposite side of the building from S and L.
My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would burst out of my chest.
A few seconds later, L came sprinting around the corner, grabbed my arm, and pulled me
toward this concrete enclosure with a dumpster inside. We ducked down and hid there, trying
to catch our breath. S was on the other side, frantically texting her sister like her
thumbs were on fire. I was shaking so bad I could barely hold my phone, but for some reason,
I opened Snapchat and posted on my story. Like, what was I even thinking? Was I trying to
let people know where I was in case I got murdered? Probably. While we were hiding, we were
heard sirens in the distance. Cars sped past, and then, gunshots. Real, actual gunshots.
My stomach twisted into a knot, and I felt like I was going to throw up. S and I were losing it,
whispering back and forth about what we should do. L, on the other hand, seemed almost too calm,
which is when it hit me, she was high. She didn't even fully grasp how serious things were.
It felt like we were trapped there forever, but finally, finally, S's sister pulled up.
She must have set some kind of record for how fast she drove because she got there the second she
clocked out. We sprinted to her car like our lives depended on it, because honestly, they probably
did, and she peeled out of there before we could even buckle up. When we got home, my mom showed
up too, even though I didn't technically need her to pick me up. I guess she had that sixth sense mom
get when their kid is in trouble.
We all ended up okay, physically at least.
That night we even filed police report.

Just to be safe
But you know what
Sometimes I still think about it
What if S's sister hadn't gotten there when she did
What if the guy in the truck
hadn't just waived that gun but actually decided to use it
It gives me chills every time I replay it in my head
Moral of the story
Stay out of sketchy areas, know some basic self-defense, and don't rely on dumb luck to keep you alive.
So yeah.
Me and my two friends almost got shot at while hanging downtown.
Wild, right?
The end.
