It was never your fault and you deserve support and healing in your own time. Whenever you're ready to talk, Dublin Rape Crisis Centre will be ready to listen. Call the 24-hour National Helpline on 1-800-77-8888. life's full of choices, man, some tiny, like picking socks, some big, like which road to take when things go sideways. And every now and then, a seemingly dumb little decision, like choosing earbuds,
Starting point is 00:01:15 can remind you that choices shape your whole experience. So yeah, I went with the black pair. And let me tell you why those rake and everyday earbuds weren't just an accessory, but a straight-up lifestyle necessity. See, I'm the kind of guy who's religious about working out. And when I work out, I want my music loud enough to drown out the sound of my joints crackling. Those earbuds, they fit so snug it's like they were molded for my gross, wax-clogged ears. I ain't proud of it, but if they can survive that environment, they can survive anything. It's like jamming pine cones in your ears versus a custom cloud. I'll take the cloud. Not only do they stay in while I'm benching or pretending to be a runner, but they also give me three sound profiles, like one for metal, one for podcasts, and one for those weird chill wave mixes I listen to when I'm pretending to meditate.
Starting point is 00:02:11 And the battery? Eight hours of playtime, 32-hour charge case. For Valentine's Day, Raken out here giving people something most relationships can't, consistency and good sound. all at half the price of those bougie brands that look cool but fall out of your ears when you yawn. Anyway, speaking of Valentine's Day. When I was in high school, I lived in this tiny Texas town where everybody either knew your name or knew someone who hated you. Real community vibes, if you know what I mean. I wasn't from there, didn't have family there, but I did have a girlfriend.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Blonde, beautiful, and totally not from my social circle. The locals weren't exactly thrilled about me dating her. Let's just say the harassment ranged from passive-aggressive stairs to a couple of knuckle sandwiches. So, Valentine's Day rolls around, and we decide to skip the school dance. Too much tension. We figured a chill movie night at her place while her folks were out sounded way better. Grabbed her dad's Honda hatchback, hit the video store, then swung by Dairy Queen for some blizzards. You know, romantic teenage stuff.
Starting point is 00:03:25 She lived way out there, like, middle of the woods, no streetlights, could be a horror movie-setting type of place. We're driving back, chatting, eating our ice cream, when I notice a car pull up behind us. At first, I don't think much of it. But then their headlights hit just right, and suddenly our backseat is lit up like a stage. And that's when I see it. Hands. A head. Someone crouched in the freaking hatchback of the car we've been driving around for an hour.
Starting point is 00:03:57 I froze. My whole spine turned into ice. I reached down slow and grabbed the only weapon I had, a beat-up pocket knife I kept for no real reason. My girlfriend notices I'm acting weird and asks me what's up. I lie through my teeth. Told her I needed to stop by a friend's house real quick. She knew I was full of it. I didn't have any friends.
Starting point is 00:04:22 I pull over at the first house we see and jump out of the car like it's on fire, yelling at her to follow me. She's confused but listens. I flipped the driver's seat forward, ready to throw hands, and there he is, this kid we kind of knew from school but never talked to. Just pops up like a horror movie villain gone soft. Hey, hey, relax. What are y'all up to tonight?
Starting point is 00:04:48 Dude. What? The hell. He claims he thought we were going to the dance and figured he'd hitch a ride. In our car. Without asking. Without telling us. Without being invited. We were just dumbstruck. He tried to play it cool like it was no big deal, but we were parked in some poor stranger's driveway in the middle of the woods with a hitchhiker in our backseat. We drove him to the school dance in dead silence, him talking the whole way like we were best friends, inviting us to join him like nothing creepy had just happened. Yeah, no. We dropped his happy ass off and sped away like the car was on fire. Back at her place, my girlfriend started shaking, crying. The reality of what could
Starting point is 00:05:40 have happened started to sink in. We never figured out what he was really planning, but I hated high school with a passion after that. And speaking of creepy dudes, I've had my fair share of unsettling encounters, but one that really stuck with me, still haunts me, to be honest, involved a guy named John. I'm 20 now, but this happened when I was just a kid. Back then, my mom and stepdad ran a small maintenance company. We lived in a tiny sub... There's so much rugby on sports extra from Sky. Starting point is 00:07:16 You waved to strangers. You invited neighbors over for dinner. You didn't not trust people. That was just how it worked. So when my parents had too much work to handle, they'd hire local boys to help, high schoolers, community college kids, that kind of thing. Enter John. He was in his mid-20s, recently moved from New York, kind of awkward, but worked hard
Starting point is 00:07:41 and seemed decent enough. My parents liked him, so he got invited to dinner. And since I missed my older sister, who'd moved away, I thought of John like a stand-in big brother. We'd talk over dinner, and I thought he was just being friendly. He always seemed really nice. He smiled a lot. Asked questions about school. My dumb middle school problems.
Starting point is 00:08:07 I felt seen. Then my birthday came around. We were going bowling, huge deal because the alley was an hour away. Somehow John invited himself. My 11-year-old brain was like, weird, but okay, he's nice. I didn't want to say no and be rude. Then came the haunted hayride. Our town did it every October to raise money for the fire department. We all volunteered. Monsters in the woods scaring people, it was fun. When John heard about it, he asked to join. My mom, being the sweet Southern lady she is, said yes without hesitation. John got placed near our station because, according to him, he didn't want to work with strangers. That's when things started feeling off. Whenever I left the group, like to visit a friend working at another station, John would somehow appear. Like clockwork. One night, I was walking alone on a trail when I heard footsteps behind me. It was him. Hey, I asked, what are you doing here? I saw you walking off. Just wanted to make sure you were safe. I told him I was fine, that my mom knew where I was. Still, he said he didn't feel right about me being alone.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Then he grabbed my arm. I yanked it away and made an excuse to go back to my station. From then on, any time I was alone, John showed up. Always smiling. Always talking. I didn't tell anyone because I didn't want to seem rude. Everyone liked him. So shouldn't I?
Starting point is 00:09:48 Then came Valentine's Day. I get home and there's a vase of half-dead roses on the counter. I asked if they were for my stepdad. My mom says no. She hands me a card, you're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. My heart dropped. My mom asked if any boys at school might have sent it. I told her no.
Starting point is 00:10:11 A week later, John stops by. Totally casual. But while he's there, he asks, so, did you like the flowers? I played dumb. What flowers? His face twisted. I didn't say anything else, but later I told my mom. She called him.
Starting point is 00:10:30 Let's just say it wasn't a polite conversation. What the hell were you thinking sending my daughter flowers? He claimed it was a friendly gesture. Pretty girl deserves roses. She told him to never, ever pull something like that again. He said, yes, ma'am, then April hit. Bucay started arriving weekly. Sometimes almost every day. My mom knew it was him. Called again. Told him he wasn't welcome anymore. But he didn't stop. One day I was downstairs on the family computer when I heard a tap on the window beside me.
Starting point is 00:11:08 I looked up. It was John. Just standing there on the porch. smiling, creepy, silent, just standing. I wasn't as scared as I should have been. I was still too young to understand how dark this was getting. I poked my head out and said, to be continued.
