Something weird caught my eye.
Starting point is 00:01:11 A flicker. A shuffle of movement just outside, right near the tree line. I blinked and sat up straighter, heart starting to pound a little faster. But then everything went still again. No sound. No second movement. Just silence and the usual. creaks of the old house. A little uneasy, I lay back down, trying to ignore the chill crawling
Starting point is 00:01:36 up my spine. My eyelids got heavy again, and eventually, I drifted off. Not for long, though. I woke up freezing, so cold I was trembling. I rolled over, thinking maybe the window was open or the heater had shut off. I got out of bed, still shivering, and padded barefoot down the hallway, too sleepy to bother flipping on any lights. The kitchen was quiet. But when I turned the corner into the breakfast area, a sudden icy gust hit my face like a slap. I stopped dead. The back door, wide open. Snow blowing in, gathering in a small white patch on the floor. I squinted at it. There were footprints. Not many. Just a faint trail coming in from the outside, but none leading back out.
Starting point is 00:02:28 There was this high-pitched ringing in my ears, like when your body knows something is terribly wrong before your brain does. I stood there frozen, too scared to move or even turn around. That's when I heard it, the slow, careful turn of a doorknob just behind me, coming from the laundry room. My blood ran cold. I don't really know why, but instead of running to my parents' room upstairs,
Starting point is 00:02:52 I darted into the hall closet and grabbed my old hunting rifle. My dad had taught me how to hold and aim it. It wasn't loaded, but that didn't matter. Right now, it was a weapon, and I needed something, anything, to feel like I had control. I aimed it toward the kitchen just as a dark figure peeked out from the laundry room. It was tall, definitely an adult, but I couldn't make out any details. Just a human shape in shadow. I had no idea if they could see me clearly, but I stammered out.
Starting point is 00:03:26 I have a gun. The voice that responded still haunts me to this day. It was cheerful, almost like a child's song. And it said my first name. Not a guess. My name. And then, I'm not going to hurt you. I'd never hurt you. I didn't recognize the voice. No idea who it belonged to. But they clearly knew me. That's when I panicked. I screamed like I was being murdered, dropped the rifle and tore down the hallway to my room. Slammed the door. Locked it. Dived under the bed, heart thundering.
Starting point is 00:04:06 I heard him walking. Calmly. Down the hall. Calling my name again, soft and slow, like we were playing hide-and-seek. Then he stopped right outside my bedroom door. Before he could do anything else, my dad's voice exploded from the stairs. He shouted something furious, and the guy bolted, just turned and ran, his footsteps pounding back through the hall and out into the cold. My parents found me still hiding under the bed.
Starting point is 00:04:36 Took me a while to unlock the door. They kept saying they had no idea who the man was, but years later, my dad admitted the truth. It was someone he knew, a guy he'd once called a friend, but who had started taking a special interest in me. He'd asked, repeatedly to take me out, like on little trips to get ice cream or go shopping. My dad always refused, and after a while, the man started lurking on our property. Watching me. I never knew any of it. My parents called the police and pressed charges, but if he was ever caught, no one told me. I still ask about him sometimes, and they always just say, it's over. But Sometimes, I still dream about that sing-song voice. That story, wild as it was, isn't mine.
Starting point is 00:05:26 It was told to me by a close friend in 2012. I'll call him John. When John was 13, his family lived on a small farm tucked into a Native American reservation. It wasn't a big community, just a cluster of homes surrounded by open land, fences, and endless sky. Everyone knew each other. That summer, they were having one of their big family bonfires. The kind where everyone gathers to eat, laugh, and share stories that go back generations. That night was no different. There were legends passed down, old tales about spirits, animal guides, and things you shouldn't talk about out loud.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Things you shouldn't even think about after dark. Eventually, the younger kid started drifting off to bed. John and a few cousins curled up inside one of the RVs near the barn It was quiet Peaceful There's so much rugby on sports extra from Sky

Starting point is 00:07:25 Until the screaming started, John bolted upright, heart hammering. The horses were going insane. Screeching, kicking, slamming into their stalls. His dad and uncle sprinted toward the barn, grabbing weapons as they ran. Stay inside, they yelled at the kids. Lock the doors, so they did.
Starting point is 00:07:49 The cousins huddled by the windows, peaking out through cracks in the curtains. But the second the adults reached the barn, everything went quiet. No gunshots. No shouting. Just eerie silence. A few minutes later, the men walked back, speaking in low, shaken voices. They slammed the barn doors shut and bolted them tight. Then they stayed up all night, circling the property with flashlights and rifles, whispering.
Starting point is 00:08:19 John asked his dad what happened. Got nothing. Just a stony face and a firm, stay away from the barn. A few days later, John noticed something standing near the fence line. A figure. Tall. Still. Just, standing there.
Starting point is 00:08:38 He grabbed binoculars and looked closer. The man was wearing. wearing old, traditional garments, ceremonial robes like a healer or a shaman. But his face was impossible to see. Still, John got this horrible sinking feeling in his gut. He told his parents, they shut him down immediately. Don't talk about it. Don't look at it. Ignore it, but that got harder and harder, because it kept coming back. Day after day, night after night. The figure would appear closer. Not at the fence anymore, sometimes inside the yard, just a few feet from the house. Always watching. Always still. John never saw it walk or move. Just, appear.
Starting point is 00:09:28 The house turned tense. Quiet. His family wouldn't talk about it, but he could take tell they were terrified. His dad practically became a ghost, barely leaving his bedroom. Then came the nightmares. John started having violent dreams, bloody, horrifying scenes where something ripped him to pieces. Every time he woke up, he swore the figure was outside his window. Sometimes just a shadow. Sometimes closer. He talked to his siblings. They were having the same dreams. One night, they all gathered in their dad's room, trembling. He looked at them, really looked at them, and for the first time, admitted what was happening.
Starting point is 00:10:13 It wants you to be afraid, he said. If we don't give it fear, it will leave. That night, John woke up to find his brothers already sitting up, pale-faced and silent. There was a low growl coming from behind their door. Then, the knob turned. So slow it was almost unnoticeable, the door creaked open. From the darkness beyond, a snout emerged. Long, sharp-toothed, and way too high off the ground to be any normal animal.
Starting point is 00:10:44 This thing was upright. Like a man. John ducked under the covers, shaking. But his brothers kept staring. Later, they described it. A creature like a wolf or a coyote, but standing on two legs. It walked into the room, looking at each bed in turn. Then John's youngest brother screamed.
Starting point is 00:11:07 The thing froze. Then jerked backward, like it had been folded in half, and vanished back into the hallway. John heard the front door crash open. Then a shotgun blast so loud it made his bones vibrate. Then, silence. Their dad burst into the room, eyes wild, and told them all to pack up. We're leaving. Now.
Starting point is 00:11:32 They drove to their uncle's house and stayed the house. there for weeks. While they were gone, John's dad brought in Navajo medicine men. They performed rituals, burned herbs, and banished the evil presence. Whatever they did, it worked. When the family finally returned, the figure was gone. So was the fear. But the damage had been done. The piece of that land never really came back. Eventually, John's dad sat him down and told him everything. What they saw in the barn, what came into their home, it was a skinwalker. A being of evil, twisted magic. Native legend says that skinwalkers are shapeshifters, often once human, now corrupted by darkness.
Starting point is 00:12:18 And they don't just hunt. They feed on fear. But his dad said something else too. Something that stuck with John for the rest of his life, you don't have to be afraid. If you live with good in your heart, if you ignore. the evil, it won't come back. John never told many people this story. Honestly, he probably wasn't supposed to tell anyone. The Skinwalker legend is sacred. Talking about it too much, attracts them. But he trusted me. And I trust him. He's not the kind of guy to lie. What he
Starting point is 00:12:55 saw, what he lived through, it scarred him. But it also taught him something. And me too. So if you take anything away from this, let it be this. Respect native cultures. They carry histories and spiritual truths far older than any of us can imagine. These people faced horrors, colonization, genocide, and yet they still walk with grace, still carry their beliefs. Maybe we should listen more. Maybe there are things out there will never understand.
Starting point is 00:13:26 But there's always a reason to be afraid. The end.
