It all kicked off with a teenage girl and a dream.
Her name.
Wanda Webb Holloway, born in 1954.
She was the only child of the Webb family, a humble couple trying to make ends meet in a modest Texas town.
Her dad, Clyde, worked at a concrete plant, and her mom spent her days serving food at the local high school cafeteria.
They weren't rich.
Their house was small, nothing fancy, and their neighborhood was far from glamour.
But the webs were respected. Churchgoers.
Decent folks. Still, Wanda didn't want decent.
She wanted spectacular.
She was obsessed with attention, with how people saw her, what they thought, how they looked at her.
She wasn't content fading into the background.
No, she wanted to shine. Be adored. Be somebody.
Every day she felt trapped in her ordinary.
life, a poor girl in a plain house in a boring neighborhood. It weighed on her. Tony Harper,
her ex-husband, would later say she was high-strung, always desperate to be liked, always going
out of her way to impress others. When she felt looked down on, she would double down, working
harder to be noticed. Eventually, Wanda landed on what she thought was the golden ticket to popularity,
becoming a cheerleader. That was the gateway to everything she dreamed of.
The friends. The outfits. The admiration. The boys. The dances. The crown at prom. You weren't just someone when you were a cheerleader, you were the one. So she practiced. She trained. She told her parents she wanted to try out. But her father, a strict religious man, flat out said no. To him, cheerleaders were trouble.
immodest, flashy, too wild. His daughter wouldn't be one of those girls. Wanda was crushed.
She never even got to find out if she would have made the squad. The dream ended before it started.
That wound never really healed. But deep down, Wanda made a secret promise to herself,
one day, her daughter would live that dream for her. The Webs wanted Wanda to go to business school,
but she had other plans. In 1972, at just 18 years old, she married Tony Harper. A year later,
she gave birth to a boy, Shane. But her dream still burned. She needed a daughter. It took a few years,
but in 1976 she got pregnant again, and in 1977, she finally had her little girl, Shana.
On the outside, the Harper family seemed picture perfect. One day, one day. One day, one of the
Wanda worked as a secretary and played piano at church.
Folks said she was classy, charming, well-spoken, always dressed to impress.
She stood out in a town full of rough edges.
But in 1980, her marriage fell apart.
Rumors swirled, cheating, neglect, abandonment.
Nothing was ever confirmed.
What was confirmed was that Wanda walked away with nearly everything.
The house, the furniture, custody of the king.
kids. Tony got some skis, a recliner, and a car. Not exactly a fair split. People thought
she'd fall off after that. Lose the nice clothes. Stop going to the salon. Let herself go.
But Wanda was smarter than that. Over the next few years, she married two more times.
First to an older, wealthy man in Beaumont. That one didn't last, but she walked away with a
financial boost. Then she married a man 20 years her senior, a businessman named C.D. Holloway
who owned an oil services company. This was her golden ticket. With CD, Wanda leveled up.
They moved into Sterling Green, a much fancier neighborhood. She got the car of her dreams,
a Lincoln Town car. She wore designer clothes, bought her kids the best of everything. Life was good.
but it still wasn't enough.
She still dreamed of the cheerleader life.
And now, Shana could be her second chance.
Wanda talked about it constantly.
Anyone who would listen heard about how Shana was going to make the squad,
how she was going to be the star Wanda never got to be.
It wasn't just a hope, it was a mission.
Rick Harper, Wanda's former father-in-law, said she was obsessed.
The second Shana could walk, Wanda bought her.
a cheerleader outfit. She put her in classes, got her a coach, made her run every morning,
pushed her to wake up early and train. There was no option to cheer or not. Cheerleading was life.
It was the only way forward. Wanda even made them dress alike. Matching outfits, matching
hairstyles. The fanciest brands, the perfect makeup, the best dresses. Even though the school didn't require
uniforms, there was a dress code, and Wanda made sure Shana always went above and beyond.
And yet, Shana wasn't like her mom. She was quiet, shy, more into studying than performing.
She didn't want to stand out. But she went along with it, trying to keep the piece. She wore what
Wanda told her. She trained like she was told. She didn't push back. At school, Shana had a close
group of four friends. They did everything together. Classes, sleepovers, weekend hangouts.
Her best friend, Amber Heath. Coincidentally, Amber lived right next door. And that's where
the real drama began. Amber's mom, Verna Heath, was a lot like Wanda. Big on appearances.
Fancy cars, beautiful home, perfect outfits. But while Verna seemed effort,
effortlessly elegant, Wanda had to fight for every inch. And that made her jealous. Bitter.
She saw Verna as competition. And though Verna may not have cared one way or another, Wanda
definitely did. The girls, though, besties. Shared secrets, coordinated outfits, inseparable.
But Amber was, well, too perfect. Her mom had been putting her in pageant since she was a toddler,
and Amber won everything.
Singing contests.
Dance-offs.
Talent shows.
Her room was filled with trophies.
At school, everyone adored her.
Shauna.
She was known mostly as Amber's friend.
Wanda saw that and hated it.
She knew, deep down, that if Amber wanted to,
she could take everything from Shauna.
Still, she stayed quiet.
Let it go.
Watched and waited.
Until 1989.
Shauna and Amber were 12, in seventh grade,
and for the first time they could try out for the cheerleading squad.
Shauna had been training her whole life for this moment.
It was her time.
She signed up, did the tryout.
Gave it everything.
And then Amber tried out too.
According to the judges, Amber nailed it.
Shauna.
Not so much.
Amber made the squad.
Shauna didn't. Wanda was livid. Furious. How could this happen?
Shauna had trained for years. This was supposed to be hers. Wanda didn't give up though.
She doubled down. Signed Shauna up for more classes. Hired better coaches. Pushed harder.
year would be different. In 1990, they tried again. More training. More pressure. Shana had become
an incredible athlete. Everyone said she was ready. The coach. The family. Friends. Everyone
believed she had it in the bag. So Wanda showed up to the tryouts this time, watching from the bleachers.
And she swore Shauna nailed it. Absolutely killed it.
But then Amber tried out again. And once again, she got the spot.
Shauna didn't make it. Wanda had had enough. To be continued.
