Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello and welcome back to even more news the first and only newscast this is my voice and my name is Katie Stoll. Hello voice of Katie Stoll. My name is Cody Johnston the voice and I'm here to seriously talk about the news. Welcome to both of us. We're both in silly moods. And maybe, maybe, just maybe that's because we're joined by our pal, some more news head writer, gamefully unemployed host, David Bell. Hi, I'm here. I'm here and i'm also silly i'm a silly man the silly goose welcome to the gooses oh i just had a flash of how serious some of the topics we're going to talk about are but we're going to start off with this energy and not think about that yet i want to see like a here like a morning news crew like uh but it's like all silly gooses so it's like welcome
Starting point is 00:01:05 to the goose and the goose and the goose they call us the geese that'd be cute and fun if we still did sketch comedy maybe nah never again that probably never again oh because i was hoping maybe sometimes we could i've got the head writer here guys we were doing some fun sketches for a while i would love to write a sketch in the mountains let's let's take down morning news crew radio once and for all i actually have always thought that would be a fun thing to parody so shock jock you mean the the people on the radio in the morning oh yeah as you drive to work i just wanted to do like a it's like a like a combo which like shock jock like morning news crew and npr yeah yeah just like those competing energies trying to get through
Starting point is 00:01:54 a news story i mean i still want to do like an audio play but you know it's a lot of work for a little return who has the time but it's fun to do a bunch of silly voices. Speaking of silly voices, February 2nd is Groundhog Day. Did not know that. Really? Yeah. See, not obviously, Jonathan.
Starting point is 00:02:18 You can save your casual judgment. I assume that everyone knew today was Groundhog Day, which means people will never hear this tomorrow because we're just stuck here yeah i didn't know it was that soon for nobody damn it i've recorded this podcast 380 times already i'm so sorry that's why the voices are so locked in yeah dialed in yeah we're really tight today february 2nd is also optimist day optimism is correlated with longer lifespans
Starting point is 00:02:47 and a lower incidence of chronic illness so you guys wait just a day about being happy be optimistic reflect on on optimism the possibility of the future at first i thought it was about optimist prime and i was very excited about that. Yeah, no, not that. But this is basically the same idea. Happiness. Do you think there are motivational posters like Optimist Prime? There better be. If there isn't, there will be. Jonathan, jot that down for the merch store.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Yeah, Optimist Prime, giving a big thumbs up, encouraging you. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is good. This is good stuff. Got it. Get rights to Optimist Prime prime there you go perfect i think if we say optimist it's gonna be we're gonna be good yeah unless it already exists email the love and spoonful and then email i guess i don't know michael bay or mattel they don't understand the love and spoonful reference
Starting point is 00:03:40 just yet one day they will one day you will we got to get through the holidays first february 3rd is doggy date night no like no path having sex with your dog or well i think obviously not all right that way um just quality time with your pup oh okay yeah because that's the other version sick other yeah yeah the version where your mind immediately went to yeah yeah the version that everyone else also thought well no i thought i i gotta say that when i first read it i thought it was like a date where you ended it doing doggy style oh wow so that's where my brain went interesting but just for a split second and your reaction makes me feel ashamed and that i shouldn't have shared it wow i just i didn't know a brain could make that association immediately you went to having sex with your dog yeah and yet
Starting point is 00:04:40 that's the the less weird one i feel like okay Okay. I will also point out that, Dave, you don't have a description of the holiday in front of you, which Katie does. All right. Okay. February 3rd is Working Naked Day. And it's not what it suggests by the name, though it could be. I think it's just stay home and work from home. What? Naked part is optional why would you
Starting point is 00:05:05 name it that great question i'm offended yeah because either commit to it or don't it's a holiday that bails on its premise right away because it says working naked day and then says whoa whoa whoa you don't actually have to work naked this is like a this is a celebration of working from home day right then it i it feels like they were like it's working naked day and then they realized that that was weird and so they had to like right after doggy date night yeah yeah you don't want to encourage people working naked fucking their dogs well obviously not going to work yeah that's like that's an underlying running theme i think subtextually in this podcast is don't do that right don't yes don't fuck your dog yeah we're just gonna say it point is i think the
Starting point is 00:05:51 important point is to work from home if you work from home uh if you don't work from home make sure your boss is okay with it otherwise you might get fired right don't work at naked at the office uh work naked from home if you don't have zoom calls um and if you do make sure that it's clear that you're wearing clothes right yeah certainly um don't stand up if you don't have pants on yeah we don't want a situation let's not keep relearning the lessons of 2020 tubing yeah when you have to like take a break from your career for a year and then you get back on tv pretty immediately yeah you know it's hard to be canceled like that just brutal anywho this feels like break time thank goodness you know what actually no i'm sad because we have
Starting point is 00:06:39 to pause talking to each other for a little while yeah we have to go silent for at least a minute we're just to sit here quietly until we get back from these advertisements. Dance break! No, I'm just kidding. This is a spot for ads. No dancing! You sit and listen as I tell you about
Starting point is 00:06:56 AG1 by Athletic Greens. It's a nutritional drink designed to fill in the gaps in your daily diet. Much like a vitamin pill, except it's a scoop of powder you put in water. I take AG1 when I do these ads, and let me tell you, I actually look forward to it. It makes me feel stronger.
Starting point is 00:07:14 And if I hear that any of you dance during this ad, I will be very sore indeed, and you will see the extent of my strength. Dancing is the devil's language, you know. It's how he enters your body. Hey now, did you know that AG1 is also keto and also vegan and also paleo and also has only a gram of sugar?
Starting point is 00:07:36 It's been a part of millions of mornings since 2010 and it can be part of yours. If you're looking for an easier way to take supplements, Athletic Greens is giving you a free one-year supply of vitamin D and five free travel packs with your first purchase. Go to athleticgreens.com slash more news. That's athleticgreens.com slash more news.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Check it out. Just remember what I said about dancing and we will be fine. We're back from the advertisement oh that was so many minutes you'll never know how long we sat in silence so many minutes gosh i'm not quite ready to talk about the news it it's always this moment right because it's i i i listen to you guys uh you know every week and there's always this moment where you're just like oh okay let's just stretch it out a little longer so we don't have to get to everybody feels it the terrible terrible news which is always some
Starting point is 00:08:29 variety of terrible yeah so we're gonna stretch it out a bit longer jonathan wrote down deer update yeah i got a deer update motherfuckers are always here yeah i drove him i sent jonathan a video i would post these videos of these deer but i and i trust like 99.9 percent of you with the information of what my house looks like but there's a percentage of you that i don't so i haven't posted them here all the time only if it's like an angle where you can't tell where my house is or what color it is right the white house yeah it's the White House. Spoilers.
Starting point is 00:09:06 Sent Jonathan a video. I keep driving home yesterday. There was one big buck in the middle of the road blocking me, and he wouldn't move. Honked my horn. Eventually he moved. Pulled into the driveway, and they were eating all of my plants.
Starting point is 00:09:23 And I start honking my horn. I get out of the car. There's two more. Now I'm flanked. And they are undisturbed by my presence. I did resort to a go on get. And I was going. I sure did.
Starting point is 00:09:38 And it took a lot. And then they came back. They just stood at the end of the driveway waiting for me to go inside. It's a problem. You didn't follow the go on get with a shoe. You got to shoe them after you go on. No, I wasn't going to take off my shoe. I did pick up a tiny little rock, but it felt too violent.
Starting point is 00:09:52 So I put it down. You got to do a go on get, then lead into a shoe, and then close it out with, we don't want you here. Yeah. You got to say, we don't want you here. We don't want you here. Go home. I tried to reason with them.
Starting point is 00:10:03 I was like, guys, this is my garden. This is not your food. No, you don't. They're trash horses. They want you here. Go home. I tried to reason with them. I was like, guys, this is my garden. This is not your food. No, you don't. They're trash horses. Gardens are food. They're trash horses. Yeah, you don't. They're complete.
Starting point is 00:10:12 They're garbage animals. Yeah, and they're covered in ticks. Yeah, I've heard that. And they got blank ass eyes and little rat brains. They're terrible. They're terrible creatures. But pretty soon there'll be some babies running around and that'll be cute uh some of these deer i've watched grow up over the yeah don't get too attached unless these are just brand new mid-sized deer i'm pretty sure that the
Starting point is 00:10:39 babies that were around earlier this year anywho okay we gotta talk about some news everyone at home is like what are you doing get on with it yeah we have not talked about tyree nichols yet this is the 29 year old black man uh who was beaten by memphis cops and died in the hospital a few days later and uh jonathan why don't you walk us through some of this stuff and we'll react in ways that I'm sure you guys all know how we're going to react. Yeah, the video, the body cam footage, edited body cam footage was released by the Memphis PD last Friday night.
Starting point is 00:11:20 I didn't watch it. I have no desire to watch these the five officers who directly participated in the beating were fired and two others who were involved were later suspended slash disciplined that includes the white officer who was involved in the initial pulling over of tyree nichols and tased him and said uh as he ran away he he said, I hope they stomp his ass. You know, there's a lot of different angles to come at this from. There are the people, there's a whole montage on Fox News of, or a montage on The Daily Show that they showed of Fox News conservative pundits arguing that, well, they're not able to hire good cops anymore because
Starting point is 00:12:06 of defund the police and because people are being so mean to the cops these days anymore so it's no wonder that they can't hire qualified officers who wouldn't because before now this was not a problem this was never a problem until now that cops were doing this of course right well it wasn't a problem and then we defunded the police right and now it's a problem right for no reason we defunded the police just you know yeah i think we definitely did we definitely did it and uh as a response this kind of thing happens yeah what if it's that idea is absurd though what if maybe yeah and like seems weird people wouldn't realize that right that that is absurd because that relies on people not remembering like recent history even yeah i've seen people also like not just this like oh they defunded the
Starting point is 00:13:01 police but just like this this idea that because like even there were like the like we got a reform and like because it didn't some of these officers get like hired because of like lowering hiring standards not but like not in response to george floyd or the protests it's from like a like few years before anyway i believe it was like 2018 like a lot or i don't know about lowering standards but a lot of these cops were hired before george floyd i do remember reading that yeah yeah three of the five joined the department in 2017 2018 two were hired in august 2020 but there's no indication that it was because of immediately lowered standards after george floyd or anything like that but even but like also like the idea that like oh they want it like in response to george floyd and the protests
Starting point is 00:13:53 the left was saying that we should lower higher standards like that's not even a thing right that was a part of it they're trying to link it up like we defunded them and so they had to lower their standards or something or like but again it really has nothing to do with that and we've done videos on police training to show like these standards were always pretty low like especially sheriff's departments we've talked about that and of course police training in general is one of the most dystopian things you can possibly watch. It's absolutely terrifying, you know? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Yeah. I always see this idea like this time around, even I saw even a lot of conservative voices being like, yep, that was bad. It was bad what they did. It looked terrible. But, you know they they always had that butt and the butt always is some way to try to justify why this isn't a systemic issue right like it's always like oh but they're getting arrested for it it's taken care of or there's the bad apples or these the idea i've still seen people go, he shouldn't have run. And it's like, yeah, the punishment for running isn't death.
Starting point is 00:15:08 Not the death penalty. Yeah. And it's so backward. I mean, it's just the mental gymnastics you have to jump through to be able to defend it. Like, well, if you're innocent, then don't resist. Look, Tyree, I also did not watch. There's no, the video, there's no threat to the officers involved there is no and running away is not a threat to an
Starting point is 00:15:32 officer running away is the exact opposite of a threat to an officer right so you want to capture that guy okay well let's have that conversation but you don don't kill them. Yeah. I think it's important to listen to the people who are saying this is not an anomaly. And I think that because I think the reason people do this, either to push an agenda or I think that people just don't like the idea that this is a real problem. You know, they like looking at they like having to like if they have to hear about stuff like this they want to tell themselves well that doesn't happen to everyday people it happens to to criminals or like it's one it's it's it's not part of police training it's not built into this system when the reality is of course it is uh and you know i think a lot of people also know that at
Starting point is 00:16:26 this point which is why these these events are so exhausting right yeah yeah it's a continued thing and then just like the same conversation over and over and like you're saying like you know trying to like well don't resist don't run don't do this there's no way you shouldn't have defunded the police look well sorry go ahead no i was just gonna say there's no way we haven't had this conversation on a podcast before all the time that's why we're saying like we're gonna run through the details of this and repeat ourselves but with these new specifics because it's none of this is a shock or a surprise we've been watching this unfold for for forever but under the spotlight of social media for also a very long time like yeah and this is just another it's just an example of like it's so frustrating and we're
Starting point is 00:17:12 gonna do a video about this um not this specific thing but like this like how we didn't defund the police and how people are like blaming uh it on this where it's like you're this was a traffic stop and the a lot of the like the mindset behind even the idea of like defund the police is that police shouldn't be doing this like they shouldn't have been involved in this and i i just keep i see like all the the right-wing pundits like well they shouldn't have done this shouldn't have done this just like obey the orders don't do this the police shouldn't have been involved and framing it like well there's you know going like if you don't do this there'll be more criminals if you get a traffic stop like if you stop for speeding or like make a wrong turn whatever do you categorize that person as
Starting point is 00:18:00 a criminal is that really the language you're trying to use and like push that like this is dealing with a criminal because that's how they talk about it yeah that's what's ridiculous about it where they're literally describing something everybody has gone for gone through and like yeah i agree most traffic stops not all but there's like you know like an expired license or like a tail light thing you we have the technology that you a cop wouldn't even have to pull you over you just get a ticket in they do that other places yeah they do that other places and so it's that thing of using these as reasons for cops to sort of dig into people's business, right? Yeah. And for a group of people,
Starting point is 00:18:47 you know, not to make generalizations, but a lot of conservatives are pretty big on individual liberties and, you know, your rights as an individual and whatnot. And to jump through all of this and not be willing to face the reality of what life is for a significant portion of our population is so obviously hypocritical, so obvious that you just are incapable for whatever reason to touch this. For whatever reason, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Well, there's a bunch of them that I can think of. And like up here, I do people talk about it's interesting i know i am always up here it's like people get hung up on like a you know yeah white people also get abused by the the police and i guess they get up in arms about the whole like but it's like obviously this is a more significant problem for the black population and yeah also there are fucking assholes that abuse a lot of people and are power hungry like it shouldn't have to just be the fact that you're upset about how you were treated by as a white person by a cop for you to care you should be able to look at what's happening over here well so that like that like complaint never really seems to like transfer over to and
Starting point is 00:20:06 the cops are a problem right well even even if even if you are ignoring like the clear like racial disparities in like law enforcement and uh our criminal justice system in general incarceration rates all that kind of stuff even if you ignore that you're like they do it to to white people too so isn't that bad still yes that's my point is it's like they use that as a justification like a defense not everybody like some people are like yeah they're a problem and then they have to also insert the fact that like white people too and i'm like okay yeah fine but other people use that as like uh a justification as a way of just shutting down the conversation and what are you what are
Starting point is 00:20:45 we doing that is kind of the end goal is shutting down the conversation a lot of this you know and and and so they yeah they resort to some of the weirdest tactics um you're talking about like fleeing the idea of running away like i it reminded me i the literally the first time i drove with my permit alone i got pulled over and didn't notice i pulled into a parking lot to get something got out of my car and started walking away and heard someone screaming at me and that person was a cop holding his gun jesus because i was fleeing technically and all like and of course like i you could argue maybe it's because of the color of my skin that i you know they didn't escalate further um i don't want to speculate on that the point being that i'm thinking of is like
Starting point is 00:21:38 that is it's just these are human things we do people fuck up all the time and using those fuck-ups as a way to somehow justify that they they did something wrong like they talk about cops like they're bears you know what i mean where it's like oh you got to do this and that if you don't do that you'll get in trouble and then that idea of like it happens to all of us and it's like shouldn't we not be treating them like they're their own weird fucked up gang that we have to be afraid of but like yeah they're human beings who like can make these they make these choices and that terror of like doing something that might be perceived as a threat when the other person has a gun and all their training has taught them to be a hero and to be jumpy about this it's like on top
Starting point is 00:22:27 of the racism you know and it's like this job you have that experience for yourself and like how scary that was and you're right had you been a different color maybe that wouldn't have gone as well for you otherwise now imagine like like okay so they're abusive assholes and to everybody now imagine that you are a person of color who has that gun pointed at your face and you know what's been happening you see it all the time you're a thousand times more likely to want to run yeah to panic to do everything to not yeah that wasn't that scary at the time because I'm like I was in a pretty fucking privileged situation and I wasn't raised to think these people could fucking kill you. It was still that like sunshine and rainbows view of cops in my mind at that time, you know? So like, yeah, I can't imagine how terrifying that is in today's climate.
Starting point is 00:23:23 I can't imagine how terrifying that is in today's climate. It's worth noting that the Memphis officers said they had pulled over Tyree Nichols for reckless driving. And then the police chief later said that a review of surveillance camera footage showed no evidence that he was driving. Oh, wow. So this wasn't even a well, he shouldn't have done that first very minor thing that we've all been pulled over for. No, we don't know why he was pulled over. Some, I mean, you know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:52 They just weren't in the right mood. And then they tased him and then he ran away. Or like the impulse, because like most of the like so many traffic violations that like cops take care of because why we have cops doing that. So many of them are just so so like well we're gonna pull them over and like if we smell like weed or something we can we can yeah go we can go further and like and like who's the there was some is that a kennedy twerp who ran
Starting point is 00:24:18 right one of the kennedys the uh little twerpy little kennedy who ran he literally said out loud like yeah we used to be able to like pull people over and like yes the marijuana smelled one of the Kennedys, the little twerpy little Kennedy who ran, he literally said out loud, he was like, yeah, we used to be able to pull people over and use the marijuana smell. But we can't do that anymore. It's like, what? They just say it out loud why these things happen. And we go solve crimes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:38 Like do crime stuff instead. That is kind of why they, yeah, they like these violations. And on top of that- Or it funds the town, the town right yeah i was about to say their entire counties there's that one in florida that i believe like their county line is this like stretch this thin line that goes to a portion of the highway and they cut it out exactly that way so they could create a speed trap to just fund that county god um that's that's how these situations work right yeah oh i don't know that training is gonna make it any better guys well defunding them didn't help yeah so we've tried everything uh it's so maddening because literally like it's not just obviously like well we didn't do that. That's obvious.
Starting point is 00:25:25 But also, the evil leftist communist Joe Biden has said, he yelled. That's so offensive to communists. He yelled, fund the police on repeat at his State of the Union. He yelled to the nation, fund the police over and over and over again. I don't know how to push back against, I other than saying that's not true it didn't happen because people seem to believe that it did it doesn't seem to believe that they we've defunded the police across the country by by the way sorry that that town i was pulled over in is my small like western mass town like population of less than a thousand they had military gear there those cops because it was of course war on terror right yeah like that was the
Starting point is 00:26:13 first time this happened it's ridiculous it's absolutely ridiculous the idea that we're not funding them enough right and then it gets like okay well this is just how it is now we got to keep the ball rolling you can't even scale back the like the gross militarization of like, yeah, their equipment and things like that. Also in Memphis, the time doesn't line up with the officers hiring. But like Memphis, what was it? Where is it? In 2021, they offered a $15,000 signing bonus to do cops because they were having trouble hiring cops so like they just gave them more money
Starting point is 00:26:49 yeah they're doing fine I mean if we're raising the standards of who gets hired to be cops great to do all these like all the people who have been accused of domestic violence are we getting rid of them now right exactly we're saying yeah no that's that doesn't count it's not it doesn't
Starting point is 00:27:10 count no it doesn't count that's not uh part of the conversation at all actually wonder why yeah yeah because what it means to actually defund the cops would be to what spend more money into social services that would reach people first a lot of people suffering from mental health issues or automating certain things or you know creeping like where it's like if there is a cop doing traffic stops that would be someone specifically trained for that process who probably doesn't have a gun yep uh who is probably doing it through like computers and it's like that's the thing it's not just like get rid of them all uh it's just like sort of
Starting point is 00:27:51 section those duties off right like the the problem more than anything is the fact that we just sort of punt everything to cops every disturbance every issue where i know people who've had mental health problems where a cop will show up at their house and like frisk them and it's like this isn't what they need right now like yeah exactly and it's ridiculous it's so obviously ridiculous and it's like you know the department the the police department that would still handle the quote-unquote cop stuff you know the department the the police department that would still handle the quote-unquote cop stuff you know the the people who like when no you know you can't do anything else they have to go in there with a SWAT or whatever the hell like they would still be funded plenty but because they were the jobs would be more sectioned off you would think they could like have a better idea of who's good for what job
Starting point is 00:28:47 and hire people who are best for those gigs, I would imagine. You'd think that that is an idea worth considering and implementing, but actually it's communist and there's no problem. So there's so many unsolved cases. Right. They just don't, like...
Starting point is 00:29:09 It's a clown show. Yeah, that's a clown show. And now here's a completely different thing that I'm going to say unrelated to... To clowns and shows. ...the phrase clown shows. Previously on The Clown Show. Now time for some advertisements.
Starting point is 00:29:24 No. Is it? Yes. Starting point is 00:31:01 I know Robert Evans has long talked about the benefits of Kratom, but I haven't tried it yet. Robert Evans is what did this to me. And I've since found a Kratom, a local Kratom place around here. And it is great. How about we talk about some more news? All right. Even more news. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:31:19 What show am I on? We can talk about some more news. Even more news. Okay. All right. That's cool. I think it's time for us to talk about DeSantis. Ronald DeSantis?
Starting point is 00:31:34 Yeah, that one. Battle Against Wokeness. Battle Against Wokeness, Jonathan. Do you hate wokeness and why? I just feel you've written all this stuff out and I feel guilty reading it as if I did. So you set this up. I just can't.
Starting point is 00:31:51 I can't lie to people like that. Sure. No, I wrote this stuff down. That's fine. The college board caved after the Department of Education in Florida, Ron DeSantis' Department of Education, rejected AP African American Studies, the College Board updated the curriculum to remove critical race theory and analysis of the writings of many scholars, including Kimberly Crenshaw, Roderick Ferguson, and Ta-Nehisi Coates. The stuff that got cut out is the analysis of black movements, specifically queer and feminist movements from the 1960s and onward. Because I don't think they understand that history is the analysis of social movements. They think it's indoctrination.
Starting point is 00:32:43 The College Board said it's not doing it because of political pressure. They say they're doing it for pedagogical reasons. We didn't know I knew anyway. I have a question. Yeah. Remember when it was about kids and parental choices and it was about they're teaching it to our six-year-olds? It really, it just gives me the same
Starting point is 00:33:04 as the trans uh laws vibes where they're like it's about kids also adults like this like the footnote at the end like it's about your freedom also we're not we're blocking this for everybody so this is a ap yeah course so yeah designed to be a college course it's taken by high school students nobody's just taking that class everybody that's taking that class has purposely decided like this is something that i'm interested in and i want to know more this isn't being shoved down uh everyone's throats quote unquote even though sorry it should be like but we're not even talking about that i mean it should just be a part of our normal history curriculum but this is a specialized class.
Starting point is 00:33:45 Yes. It's the idea of someone saying, I want to take this course and then having to say, sorry, we have to censor this information from you that you're requesting. Yeah. It is. Ron DeSantis saw a TikTok, so we can't do this anymore. Exactly. It's just wild. And I know we've talked about this a million times, how they're just doing the thing they are accusing people of doing. Where they're like, they're infiltrating your schools,
Starting point is 00:34:09 so we're gonna get ahead of it by infiltrating the schools with our ideology. Like it's so transparent that they're terrified of the idea that what they believe is gonna go extinct the more people learn. It's such an obvious like like if your ideology depends on keeping people on the in the dark about things like then that's not a sound ideology right uh and you should examine that you know oh well they're not even saying like well if it's a course for college and stuff like if you're going to teach this stuff you
Starting point is 00:34:45 should teach other stuff along with it to like counter it right start they're just saying don't that's not the conversation at all yeah and like obviously like they're you know um you don't like there are certain things in education probably you don't need to both sides like we don't need like creationism involved in like science classes things like that but at least there's the illusion that they're trying to have like some sort of educational conversation as opposed to don't even mention it it's uh really showing your cards there if you don't even want to talk about it or touch a subject why there's just the whole i find in conversations with people there's a the idea of like well i don't want to feel guilty or it's like not my fault i don't think we should be teaching people to feel guilty that's not what
Starting point is 00:35:35 this is about this is literally about showing perspectives and just teaching people what happened and showing in this case talking about theory and, you know, showing intellectualism and like people unpacking what's happened, what is literally still happening. And it's vitally important. But if you don't even want to engage with it, you're saying so much about yourself. yourself i wouldn't make any assumptions about you and your your opinion on race at all up until you open your mouth and say that you shouldn't have uh this curriculum taught then you're showing me that you don't even want to be exposed to it you know yeah it's also really telling that like the cutoff is basically 1960 like history history is like oh we got to teach history and like oh we gotta teach history and like the things that happened but not after 1960 right those things are not actually things that happened and angela davis starts writing and then
Starting point is 00:36:33 we're done exactly yeah if some if some old guy is like i don't want to feel shamed by the teaching of this history my my answer is why where were you where were you during the teaching of this history my my answer is why where were you where were you during the teaching of this history maybe you shouldn't be the person making this decision if you happen to be one of the white faces in the background of these pictures of people screaming at black people trying to go to school and it's all this programming don't show that photo media and social media and actual media and all just this idea that well it's not my fault like no you didn't have a slave right don't think unless you're some sort of a witch that is hasn't died in hundreds of years right like but what is our fault and what is our responsibility is addressing what's happening right now.
Starting point is 00:37:27 The curriculum is not AP shame and guilt, though. It's really not. It's like the writings of bell hooks. Like, it's not. But that's the way that people are, the message they're getting from DeSantis, from all sorts of people saying, like, this is Tucker Carlson. This is what they're gonna do that's not it at all well okay like okay uh like these are obviously this comparison is these are the same people who like well who say like don't read this don't read
Starting point is 00:37:56 this don't read this they're the same people who'd be like yeah i'm reading mind comp because i because i think it's interesting because of educational purpose or whatever it is like there are so many monsters that are like read throughout like your education to know what people are saying at the time or to know like right like that's part of history and at a certain point you have to ask well at a certain point you have to ask like why doesn't that bother you and why does this bother you? Where it's like these people who are like, it's just about logic and facts. But let's avoid these facts.
Starting point is 00:38:33 Right. Avoid this person's logic or whatever. Again, it's they're snowflakes. It's literally safe space snowflakes trying to make colleges fit for them to hide historical facts that's what it is and the idea when they talk about shame the thing that always bothers me there is just it's it's literally to me that it's very again it's all very similar to the trans stuff where they're like we don't want kids being groomed uh in classrooms and it's like oh so is that a big problem show me how that's a big problem it's the same with that we're like we don't want kids to feel ashamed it's like oh so is that a big problem show me how that's a big problem it's the
Starting point is 00:39:05 same with that we're like we don't want kids to feel ashamed it's like oh is that a problem is that you can you show me point me to all these kids having this problem being really like shame are is there a classroom where they're screaming at the kids for being white show me this right and they never do they just kind of say that's the thing and it's like i've never taken happening right like it's happening and it's like no what the fuck i've never had a history class that made me feel shame for this stuff say frame it like yeah like this like oh they're shaming kids are shaming kids and like they're oh you know they try to make us all feel guilty and shameful do you feel shame right because i'm pretty sure you're fucking shameless um and uh so it's clearly
Starting point is 00:39:46 doesn't even if that's what they're doing which they're not it clearly doesn't work so yeah there was a conversation about this the other night i didn't really get involved with but one person was saying like no i this is all about um sexual stuff this is all about like and and like i was like i'm pretty sure that's not true however you might be conflating the other stuff that's happening in florida which i'm not gonna touch right now like for another time because it's like if because it's like like also that's you know i think maybe conflating the don't say gay stuff and like oh it's conflating all of it and that's all of it but it's that same thing but like people are like well we shouldn't be teaching you know about sexuality and stuff and i was like this is right and it's just a big mess more often we need to
Starting point is 00:40:42 challenge them on the initial premise because we get so far from that where we start like and like the grooming thing is just a good example of that or the drag shows where it becomes this conversation we're like well you know what about hooters and so on and so forth but just wind it back and go what are you even talking about what is the initial problem you think is happening? And can you show me that? You know what I mean? And so it's not conflating anything or it's not, none of these things
Starting point is 00:41:12 are necessarily comparable, only except that they make up a problem in the first place. And they're able to lead us away from that enough to have this other conversation when we should put our foot down at that initial thing and say like yeah it's up the burden of proof is on you to prove like is this even a problem don't show me some like random article about a kitty litter in a school like classroom
Starting point is 00:41:39 or something like that that like is from some random bullshit website like like if you think this is a problem show us first that it's a problem right before any of this crap but they're able to sort of draw it away from that and then the next thing we know when it just keeps escalating till it's just now it's about adults and about their freedom and about things that they never said they were even concerned about in the first place. And it's just hypocrisy after hypocrisy. And we're so tied up into it. It's not necessarily about what they're rejecting. The rejection and like the framing that we're seeing is a tactic to achieve their actual goal.
Starting point is 00:42:23 Right. tactic to achieve their actual goal right like right uh it can't be overstated that much of this comes from christopher rufo and like manhattan institute freaks and like which was founded by like a former cia director i'm pretty sure um but like this sort of christian nationalism like uh they wanted intelligent design taught in schools and they sort of abandoned that for this they have like goals for what schools are and what they should be and what they should be teaching and that ideology so they create these boogeymen to have something to reject and to lead people to what they actually want which what it seems to me at least it's not it's not like they're like oh this this is a real problem this this this this like if we say this is a problem we call it this and we like frame it
Starting point is 00:43:09 like this we use this language and we conflate these things then they're gonna fear all this stuff together right and reject all this stuff outright in a lump and then we can direct them to our you know new school of freaks or whatever the florida america university of assholes because this is all it's all circling the idea of liberal ideologies indoctrinating kids right yeah it's the it's the secret commies and infiltrating our in like local elementary yeah little communist babies uh yeah chris rufo is now on the board of the new college of florida um which is a small liberal arts school because desantis is trying to completely revamp and overhaul higher education in florida he's like come right out and said here are the things i'm
Starting point is 00:43:59 trying to do and the top things are like eliminate ideological conformity. But then the second one is mandate courses in Western civilization. Oh, interesting. Which is a very I don't like the phrase. And also pretty sure they're already mandated because like European history and U.S. history. Yeah, there's like curriculum requirements for like knowing about the world. But so it's like we don't want there to be all this ideological conformity, but we're going to eliminate all the diversity and equity programs and just talk about Western,
Starting point is 00:44:29 what quote unquote Western civilization. We're going to create an echo chamber of education. And they, they push it as retaliation. When I was little, my sister threw sand at me in the sandbox and I remember it. And I threw sand backs and she told on me for retaliating against her forgive her and she framed it no never and my point is that's what they're doing
Starting point is 00:44:52 is that they're like they've created a situation where they're like we're the victims originally when there was nothing there was nothing wrong and now they get to retaliate against that and that's an actual that's just an an attack yeah self-victimization in order to sort of create a well like they they see the way things go progress progresses people evolve and change and it's not that schools are liberal indoctrinating people it's just the truth not even a good job of it our school system isn't great in a lot of places that's a whole other conversation like like right certain areas better than others but like you know what they're pushing back against isn't indoctrination it's just truth it's just truth it's just progress and there's so more and more people
Starting point is 00:45:47 start to see what's happening also we've got social media we've got a whole wealth of information at our fingertips you're not going to slow down this train guys right and i on join us i do think if if you don't like it progress looks like invasion of the body exactly it looks like pod people it looks like the world's gone gone yeah exactly um because like oh no disney you too you're also woke and it's like no they're just sort of like slowly conforming to the times right going where the money is which is you know these specific things and like will this prop will will people push it a little too far here and there i don't know maybe but i also don't care that's never that never results in a big problem and so it's just you know it's the flow of progress and i get that
Starting point is 00:46:42 it's scary for some people i guess but it's gonna happen gonna happen anyway and it's just it's like there's this weird thing in the conversation that is ignored so many times especially like by like people in government who can actually do something but like there are problems with education like katie you were talking about like yeah education isn't great yes um and like university like in a lot of ways is a scam and like it's way too expensive and there are things you can do but by the way ap courses too there's some like yeah exactly but not because of what they're saying not because they're like teaching us writings from the 60s or whatever and it always it's always reminds me of
Starting point is 00:47:21 this um it's this instant pushback they're like i i keep seeing these days like uh they're teaching kids uh instead like like lies obviously but like well that instead of teaching like colors and numbers they're teaching kids about genders and stuff it's like are they doing that instead of teaching them colors um but but also like it's the same the same people who are complaining about like we're supposed to like school is for like uh teaching like arithmetic and and and and reading and stuff like that they're the same people who complained when like common core math was introduced as like this this is actually like the way that human brains kind of think in like patterns and how like how we conceptualize numbers and this is
Starting point is 00:48:05 actually a better way to teach kids math so like even the quote-unquote like progressive stuff of like like like trying to find new ways to teach and get information to kids they reject that outright because it's different and new well they don't right yeah they don't like again it's i this is part of why i really think it's important to always kind of meet them at their initial complaint because it it often points out how little they care where it's like oh you want to talk about grooming high schoolers well let's look at like the statistics there let's look at the fact that a lot of high schoolers that of what little studies we have because we don't have that many studies maybe we should do something about that uh do report being like being like having some sort of grooming from staff and high schoolers it's just not the gay staff like it's it's the fact that they wanted
Starting point is 00:48:57 it to be this lgbtq issue and it's like it's it's still an issue in high schools all over the country every high school has the story of the one teacher or the two teachers in some high schools. Like, it is bad, but they don't actually care about that. That's not what they care about because they're trying to just go, yeah, they're just trying to go after gay people. They're not actually trying to go after the problem.
Starting point is 00:49:21 And so when they say, like- Well, a straight man has every right to be attracted to a 16 year old exactly yeah no that's like those those lucky high school boys and they're like their teachers right yeah that's what they say exactly and that's the thing is that if you if you get them into that conversation if they say i care about the grooming or i care about and talk to any kids and you say okay i'm gonna stop you right there. And let's actually talk about that and work out the problem.
Starting point is 00:49:50 Like it's the solution isn't going to be what they want. It just isn't because they started with that solution in the first place. They wanted that goal. And so like when you guys are saying like there's plenty of problems with colleges and schools, it's like 100 percent. It's just not the problems they care about yeah and it's tough to have that conversation because then it starts going into this territory and it's like no i do not accept i completely fundamentally reject what your solutions are what your your problems are with the education system and it's distracting from
Starting point is 00:50:19 these other conversations that are actually important the problem isn't like talking about the idea of reparations like no yeah because also like that's there was at least a time in the country where that's what people were talking about do it like it's just a part of history that should be taught we can't just stop at the decade that like things got a little worse for like rich white people i don't know yeah you can talk about the thing and let people form their opinions of it see if you see if they still agree with you um guys we had a whole bunch of topics but we went right through our time with a two nice conversations lovely breezy easy not heavy conversations um real light real light stuff dave i was on your podcast this is gonna be coming out the same time oh competing
Starting point is 00:51:15 podcast you're right we're gonna talk about netflix crackdown but we you and i talked about that on your show so maybe that's a tease for people to go to this after yeah i'm intrigued my ears are perked up and ready for netflix password discussion plan on the podcast that is called hypecast there we go that's how you plug an episode of a show i guess we're plugging things now yeah yeah we can i mean it is it is all i want to say is it is very silly what netflix is doing do you want me to plug stuff is that what i'm supposed to be doing right now or i don't know we just kind of careened into this section we can keep talking after i plug stuff i'll just say get gamefully unemployed look it up that's it this is a podcast called hypecast that we talked about the netflix thing which we can keep talking about right now
Starting point is 00:52:09 which is simply that they're creating this like 31 day where like if you're away for 31 days then they uh reset or lock you out and you need a special code to go on vacations and all i can think is like yeah we love rules like consumers that's what we want is complex rules that's why twitter is doing so good right now weird little rules and little procedures we love extra procedures yeah especially when it's a it's a special procedure built on something that used to be incredibly simple yeah yeah my take was uh and this is a real hot take netflix hasn't put out much of anything that i actually even want to watch in a while i did not finish the season of the crown even i was enjoying it but like yeah i watch me get logged out and then cancel we talked about
Starting point is 00:53:07 that too like i'm like i just won't ever log back in like i did with facebook yeah i'll watch i'll watch them stranger stranger things i'll watch that i think you should leave um my partner watches a lot of k dramas so like for that reason i'll probably not be faced with this but my view is like if one day i click on netflix and it's like it's been more than 31 days you're locked out i'll just go oh yeah i guess i will cancel you like that's it that's all most people will do and like the people who are affected of course are like college kids or people who travel a lot like it's this idea of like everybody watches things differently there are people who are on the road a lot and to try to tackle the problem of password sharing this way is very silly that's all i should point out that this is this may not be what is ultimately released in the u.s this was
Starting point is 00:54:03 like an accidental publication of a page from the trial that they're doing in like chile and peru okay so they're probably they're probably testing the waters this is probably a leak to see how it gets uh how it lands and that people are listening netflix no dice man no dice do dice. Do more. Make it worse. Make it worse for people. People love that. It feels very Twitter. I dare you.
Starting point is 00:54:29 Where Twitter would say they're going to do this thing, and then everybody reacted, and they're like, actually, we weren't going to do that. My brilliant chess move of pretending I had a bad idea. I love companies following Elon Musk's example, Elon Musk following Donaldk's example elon musk following donald trump's example like just a disgusting circle of life floating ideas you know brainstorming with everybody else that's the side of a brainstorm stable situation that for his yeah all right we've done it we did it we're here we did it we've arrived at the end of the show
Starting point is 00:55:06 you've already plugged next week or even more news so you guys plug made up shows Cody that's your forte previously on the fire chronicles oh I've got powers I can't use them yet
Starting point is 00:55:24 help me you've many dads it's good I've got powers. I can't use them yet. Help me. You have many dads. It's good. That's also something we talked about on Hivecast, right? The power. Oh, wait, no. The power. The power.
Starting point is 00:55:37 You were metabolizing. The fire chronicles were the characters. But then you kind of said something about it. Anyway, listen to that show. We'll talk about it check me out i'm on uh i'm on this week's episode of hole digging on amc plus they go and like dig up different holes and like test the soil around in the world so i went to saskatchewan and we did a hole uh hole dig in there uh so yeah amc plus hole digging d-i-g-G-I-N, apostrophe. Saskatchewan soil.
Starting point is 00:56:05 Yeah, fantastic. And you have to get AMC Plus to check it out. Voice over by Shia LaBeouf, right? He does all the commentary on it. Yeah, Shia LaBeouf does all the voice over, and he dubs me, so it's not my voice. If you like my voice, it's Shia LaBeouf. You can't tell.
Starting point is 00:56:21 You cannot tell. Wow, that's incredible. Yeah, he does a great job. I mean, you do a great job, too incredible. Yeah, he does a great job. I mean, you do a great job too, obviously, but he does a great job. The only thing I have to share is that I'll be on the upcoming season of Bridgerton. Oh.
Starting point is 00:56:34 Because of all my accents. Next time on Bridgerton. All right, guys. You know what? What? We love you very much. Oh, very much. Aw.
Starting point is 00:56:47 Oh. That's it. That's the show. That's the show.
